ROSEN: Educrats vs. common sense

February 20, 2009

The recent gun "crisis" at Cherokee Trail High School is a textbook case in mindless bureaucracy trampling common sense. Marie Morrow - a well-behaved, self-motivated, responsible, morally upright, model student - was instantly suspended for 10 days and threatened with expulsion for a misunderstanding that could and should have been resolved by reasonable administrators (pardon the oxymoron) in 10 minutes.

ROSEN: Keep 'Mustang' at DIA? Neigh

February 13, 2009

The first time I saw the Blue Demon at Denver International Airport, I thought it was some kind of temporary publicity stunt. The next time I saw it, it was evening and those menacing red lights from the scary steed's beady eye sockets were glaring at me through the darkness. Little did I know that Denver city government intends the Mustang, as it's officially named, to remain as a permanent fixture. Only time will tell whether it serves to attract or ward off evil spirits.

ROSEN: Stimulating the welfare state

February 6, 2009

Here's the opening paragraph from a New York Times story by reporter Robert Pear (please note that this is a news story in the oh-so-liberal New York Times): "The stimulus bill working its way through Congress is not just a package of spending increases and tax cuts to jolt the nation out of recession. For Democrats, it is also a tool for rewriting the social contract with the poor, the uninsured and the unemployed, in ways they have long yearned to do."

ROSEN: Rein in PERA

January 30, 2009

The Public Employees' Retirement Association is a defined-benefits retirement plan for more than 400,000 current and already retired government workers. Its members include state employees, public school teachers and administrators, judges, state troopers, county and municipal workers.

ROSEN: Will deeds match words?

January 23, 2009

It would have been hard for President Barack Obama's inaugural address to match the historical impact of the swearing-in ceremony that immediately preceded it. His speech was good but not great. The content wasn't as memorable as JFK's or Ronald Reagan's. Obama is a handsome figure and a gifted orator, so his own standards had set a high bar, which he didn't quite hurdle. Nonetheless, beset with economic troubles, overseas wars and a raft of uncertainties, most of the nation remains ripe for

ROSEN: Mainstream (liberal) media

January 16, 2009

In its Saturday opinion section, the Rocky Mountain News gives readers a chance to Talk Back to the Media. Under the headline "Mainstream media hardly monolithic," a liberal reader took issue with conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer's criticism of the "mainstream media" for shamelessly favoring Barack Obama during the presidential campaign. The reader disputed this and, implicitly, the notion that the mainstream media have a liberal bias.

ROSEN: Bring back Boone

January 9, 2009

I have many fond memories of my days at the University of Denver in the early 1970s. We had some great Pioneer hockey teams back then with future NHL stars like Pete McNab and Ron Grahame, led by legendary coach Murray Armstrong.

ROSEN: Where all the money went

January 2, 2009

The recent meltdowns of financial markets have afflicted, either directly or indirectly, just about everyone in the world economy (with the exception of some individual short-sellers).

ROSEN: 2008 liberal media awards

December 26, 2008

It's time for the 21st annual Media Research Center's awards for the most biased, manipulative or downright goofy quotes from liberals in the "mainstream" media. I'm honored to serve, once again, on MRC's distinguished panel of conservatively-biased judges. Here are some of the lowlights from among the winners and runners- up of Best Notable Quotables of 2008:

ROSEN: Congressional Motors

December 19, 2008

It may take a while to get there. But after two or three extensions and expansions of future loans to the Big Three automakers, Democrats in Congress and the Obama administration will be so financially and politically invested in Detroit's survival that they'll be addicted to throwing (the taxpayers') good money after bad.
