HOWARD: Fun place to hang out

February 27, 2009

My first exposure to the Rocky Mountain News was in January 1965. I had completed my mid-year exams and had flown to Denver for a job interview with Jack Foster, the Rocky's editor. Foster also was probably one of the closest friends of my father, who was then general editorial manager and president of E.W. Scripps Co.

PUNCEC: An uncle's empty chair

February 26, 2009

If you are reading this then you know that a member of the family has died. It's OK to cry.

HILLMAN: Dems eye another end run on voters

February 25, 2009

Emboldened that the state Supreme Court still hasn't ruled on Gov. Bill Ritter's plainly unconstitutional property tax hike, tax-and- spenders at the state Capitol are drawing up their game plan for another end run around voters.

O'SHEA-DAWKINS: Brisk, dark mornings on a bicycle began a love affair of nearly 50 years

February 22, 2009

In the early-morning darkness the smell of the late-spring air filled my head with anticipation of summer as I awaited the Rocky Mountain News delivery truck.

COUNTERPOINT: Bus-rapid transit better in these hard times

February 21, 2009

Here is a little-known fact to think about when contemplating another tax increase for FasTracks: The Regional Transportation District runs the emptiest light-rail trains in the country.

POINT: Cheap shots won't deter completion of FasTracks

February 21, 2009

The Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post recently ran separate guest editorial pieces regarding FasTracks that require a response. Both made assertions that "management" problems are at the heart of FasTracks financing issues and that a change in management was called for. As the general manager and CEO of the Regional Transportation District, I must assume full responsibility for the FasTracks program and the entire RTD operation and accept that those attacks are aimed at me.

SESERMAN: Keep the giving impulse alive

February 20, 2009

In his book, Bowling Alone, Robert B. Putnam notes that "giving time and money to help others is a long and distinguished tradition in American society." He adds, "Both philanthropy and volunteering are roughly twice as common among Americans as among the citizens of other countries."

TAFOYA: Address global warming crisis now

February 15, 2009

All of us - individuals, families, corporations, elected officials, businesses and communities - will need to change our ways if we are going to solve global warming.

Presidents on a pedestal

February 14, 2009

Don't get us wrong, we like the splendid Jefferson Memorial as well as anyone and we don't mind Mount Rushmore. Yet in so honoring presidents at the expense of Congress, the courts and others, what message are we sending? Does the public begin to expect that only a president can be our primary protector and benefactor? Does this image accurately reflect the political world presidents occupy?

BROWN: Perplexed by hatred of 'Mustang'

February 14, 2009

Yes, [Mustang] has generated admirers and critics. “Demonic” to some, “fabulous” to others. Not surprising, because that’s what riveting public art is supposed to do: make a statement, grab the public’s attention and generate debate with no shortage of opinion.

CIRULI: Economy a stumbling block for RTD

February 13, 2009

Buoyed by reports of public support, the Regional Transportation District is said to be considering going back to the ballot for another tax hike for funds to complete the stalled FasTracks. However, there are good reasons to believe that, this time, voters might tell RTD "Not so fast."

LUCERO: Rocky distorts clean-government law

February 11, 2009

Real change never comes easily - particularly when it means pulling at the purse strings of a political establishment that will fight at all costs to preserve the status quo. Take the fight over Amendment 54, Colorado's recently passed clean-government law.

Xcel passes costs of 'green' projects on to ratepayers; IREA won't play that game

February 8, 2009

In a Business section story of Jan. 28, "For Xcel, it pays to save energy," the Rocky Mountain News reported that "IREA doesn't believe in rewarding customers for energy efficiency." That statement was to draw a bright line between IREA and Xcel Energy.

SPEAKOUT: Heroes needn't be carved in stone

February 7, 2009

What do Samuel Adams, Henry Clay, Jefferson Davis, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Sam Houston, Robert E. Lee, King Kamehameha I, Robert La Follette, Will Rogers, Sacagawea, George Washington, Daniel Webster, Brigham Young, Florence Sabin and John L. "Jack" Swigert have in common?

CARVER: Dear Secretary Salazar

February 6, 2009

Nearly 50 years ago, my wife and I sat on the east steps of the U.S. Capitol to hear John F. Kennedy take the reins of the nation's leadership. For me, it was the beginning of nearly six years' service under Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson as assistant secretary and under secretary of the U.S. Interior Department.
