Gov. Ritter's checklist for a better DNC

Let's go through the checklist of items Gov. Bill Ritter needs to address before the Democratic National Convention so we can assure our summer visitors that they are welcome in our state:

Imported workers would be legal

As a Colorado farmer, I would like to respond to letter writer Ed Ramsey regarding the Colorado legislative efforts to bring in (legal) foreign workers to work the farms here ("Dear Lawmakers: We want illegals gone," May 2).

Use stationary bikes to generate electricity

Here's a thought: Rig all the stationary bikes in fitness centers across the U.S. to generate wattage from their drive-trains and feed it into the grid. Exercisers burn calories, loose weight, generate electrical power. Wattage produced can be monitored by magnetic-strip cards issued that the user puts in card reader at the bike station.

It almost doesn't pay to bicycle anymore

In an effort to curb the use of automobiles, many may think that riding a bicycle would be a great way to get into shape and save the environment. I have noticed a few problems with that:

Why does the Rocky Mountain News bother to put little platitudes about how the economy is improving on its editorial page, like the little fairy tale it published May 5 ("An economy with surprising resilience")?

Poor hurt by ethanol

Congress is paying our farmers to increase your food costs!

A token at CU indeed

Thank you to the Rocky Mountain News for Vincent Carroll's On Point column of May 14, "A $9 million token?"

Littwin Obama's shill

I realize that Rocky Mountain News columnist Mike Littwin is a true believer and wants all of us to be one, too, when it comes to Barack Obama. But isn't he supposed to be a commentator and not a campaign representative with his very own column? Every time I see his column heading, it is along the lines of "Obama good; Clinton bad."

The good news Dems

Finally, some good news from the government: Legislation to penalize insurance companies that refuse legitimate claims. Hooray for the Democrats who introduced these bills and for Gov. Bill Ritter for backing them. Also, cheers for the push for alternative energy.

The bad news Dems

Gov. Bill Ritter and Sen. Ken Salazar, both Democrats, oppose increased oil and gas exploration in the United States.

It takes wealth to be environmentally correct

With the dollar declining in value every day ,we still refuse to develop our oil reserves and continue to send our wealth overseas.

Glad Carroll pointed out flaws of cap/limit contingency fees charged by lawyers

RE: Vincent Carroll’s Column, “Trial lawyer triumph." Kudos to Vincent Carroll for his May 8th, 2008 column, “Trial lawyer triumph,” in which he accurately points out the many flaws with the recently withdrawn ballot measure to cap/limit contingency fees charged by attorneys.

Boulder a better place for Extra Terrestrial Affairs Commission

I think Mr. Peckman has chosen the right city for his Extra Terrestrial Affairs Commission, however, he might get an even better reception in Boulder.

Pity Mark Hillman withdrew his ballot initiative to cap contingency fees

What a pity it is that former Senate GOP leader Mark Hillman withdrew his ballot initiative to cap contingency fees, when the trial lawyers countered with a barrage of nuisance initiatives of their own.
