Guantanamo prisoners could go to Colorado's Supermax

The federal Supermax prison in Colorado is under consideration to house terrorism suspects from Guantanamo Bay, but a spokesman for Gov. Bill Ritter says military prisons in three other states are more likely contenders.

President Barack Obama has ordered the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, closed within a year. A task force will study where the estimated 245 detainees should be sent.

One of the sites under consideration is Supermax, located in Florence about 90 miles south of Denver. Inmates already at Supermax include Zacarias Moussaoui, a Sept. 11 conspirator; Ramzi Yousef, mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center attack; and Richard Reid, who tried to blow up a trans-Atlantic jetliner with a shoe bomb.

Ritter wouldn't oppose transferring the Guantanamo Bay detainees to Supermax because it was built for just that type of high-risk inmate, Ritter spokesman Evan Dreyer said today.

"If Supermax is chosen, there's no reason to take a 'not in my backyard' approach," Dreyer said.

But Dreyer said based on media reports, Ritter believes it's more likely that the Guantanamo Bay inmates who aren't sent to other countries would be transferred to a military prison.

He said Ritter has had no contact from the Obama administration about the possibility of a transfer to Supermax.

U.S. Reps. Doug Lamborn and Mike Coffman, R-Colo., denounced the idea.

Lamborn told 9News he worries about "liberal judges" freeing terror suspects on technicalities. He said he also worries about the terrorism suspects spreading their ideas to other inmates.

Coffman accused Ritter of offering an "open invitation" to keep Guantanamo prisoners in Colorado.

State Rep. Buffie McFadyen, D-Pueblo West, whose district includes Supermax, said a military prison would offer better security. Supermax would need more staff and perhaps even a new detention center to house the Guantanamo prisoners, she said.

State Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Yuma, called the idea "extremely dangerous." Supermax, formally called Administrative Maximum, was built in 1995 for the nation's most dangerous inmates. It can hold 490 prisoners.

Its 7-by-12-foot cells are soundproofed and designed so inmates can't make eye contact with each other. Beds are concrete platforms topped with mattresses. Inmates are allowed outside of their cells for an hour a day.

Guards shot and killed two Supermax inmates and up to 30 other prisoners were injured when a fight broke out in the recreation yard in April. Authorities said up to 200 inmates brawled with rocks, metal, plastic or wood after white supremacist inmates targeted minorities on Hitler's birthday.

There are surely some who should be held and punished but I fear there may also be those who have done nothing, that are still being held.

Being prisoners of the military I think it should be the military who houses the prisoners however!

I'd be pissed too if someone snatched me up, tortured me and gave me no chance to defend myself in a court of law.

You can count on one hand how many convictions we've gotten out of all the Gitmo detainees. If they are all such awful criminals why can't we convict them and lock them up? Oh that's right....because we tortured the crap out of all of them.

Thank goodness Obama has the brains to see what a black eye Gitmo continues to be for the US. Closing it is extremely wise....

No follow-up terrorist attacks on US soil since 9/11 is also the legacy of the Bush administration. No small feat. We'll see if Obama can tick off 4 or 8 years and still be able to make the same claim. For the record - I hope he will be able to.

Diff, Right - You as well as many others miss an important difference. These are terrorists, not US citizens who broke the law, have been arrested and are entitled the right to a speedy trial. Do you understand the difference? This isn't about whether evidence was obtained "legally" nor is it about their Miranda rights (which they do not have UNLESS you put them in US courts).

And why so much distrust of our intelligence agencies? You immediately assume the vast majority of these terrorists to be innocent and unjustifiably detained without having any actual knowledge about the reason for their detainment. You're quick to accuse the US of wrong doing yet totally support the notion that the only reason some release-ees have returned to terrorism is because we locked them up in the first place. Why are these most wildest of possibilities the very first ideas you glom on and stick to?

It all boils down to this... You really only have two choices in this matter and I hope you make the right one.

You can either trust our intelligence professionals to use the best possible judgement in identifying threats to US citizens, or tie the agencies hands so tight that they can do absolutely nothing about any possible threat they become aware of no matter how much evidence they have or not.

These guys are toxic waste and should be treated like such. No state or municipality wants to be the recipient of a toxic waste dump. By spreading them out, you lessen the risk and impact to a single community. You also lessen the power of a large group in prison and makes it easier to mete out a little prison justice. Even some prisoners have honor and morals which could go a long way in helping eliminate this threat, if you know what I mean.

But to say that most of them are just goat herders is simply dishonest rationalizing by those who refuse to acknowledge any threat to this country that may cause them to have to face hard choices. What's more, it is close to treasonous slander of the men and women who are doing their best to protect us. We don't knowingly imprison innocent goat herders. Even the Obama administration has admitted that only SOME of those held at Guantanamo will be tried in the US, and the rest will be freed.

"I pray that those who are freed do not victimize any innocents."

Considering that 61 previously freed Gitmo detainees have RETURNED to commit terrorist actions should make you do a lot more than pray. And those were the ones considered LESS likely to commit terrorist acts! When as many as HALF of the 245 detainees, that are still there because they're considered MORE dangerous, are freed, you had better stop defending their release with prayers and start admitting it is a mistake. And working to REVERSE this braindead decision to endanger innocent people.

The Yemeni branch has been implicated in several attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Yemen's capital Sana.

Al-Shihri is one of a small number of deputies in the group, the U.S. counter-terror official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss sensitive intelligence.

The militant Web site, which referred to al-Shihri under his terror nom de guerre, "Abu Sayyaf al-Shihri," also revealed his Guantanamo prisoner number, 372.

    I need to correct myself,
Rather, the defendants in military court were mainly civilians suspected of aiding the rebels. Gen. Halleck explained the rationale: In Missouri, he said, those burning bridges or buildings weren't "armed and open enemies" but "pretended quiet citizens living on their farms." These civilian rebels couldn't be treated as prisoners of war, but neither could they be entrusted to the local courts, which Halleck deemed "very generally unreliable"—not least because so many locals were likely to sympathize with the South. (International war crimes tribunals, like those used to try the Nazis at Nuremberg after World War II, weren't yet common practice.) So starting in September 1861, Missourians were prosecuted under military tribunals that Union generals established. Lincoln did nothing to deter his generals from doing as they saw fit to subdue Missouri.

I would put the hajiis in restraints on an old, C-130 loaded with just 1000 pounds of fuel and a pilot equipped with a chute, and have him set it on auto-pilot with a 90 degree heading and cruise altitude of 20,000 and jump. They could then experience what those on the 9/11 jets experienced. "Shucks, Hajii, sometimes life can be a real bummer, huh? But, I guess you'll understand, since you and your buddies think it's great fun to cut off the heads of Jewish journalists and kids on TV and broadcast their lonely, hideous deaths on the internet?"

Of course, the new Administration, influenced or controlled by traitorous Anti-Christian Lawyers' Union worms, will probably buy the poor, oppressed hajiis first-class seats home on Gulf Air and pay them $5 million per head. They were responsible for Waco and sending storm troopers into Elian Gonzales' grandparents home so he could be forcibly returned to the workers' paradise of Cuba. They issued FISA guidance so stringent FBI field agents were prevented by SES weanies from going after the 9/11 hijackers. They cashiered New York FBI Agent John O'Neill in retaliation for pressing the Saudis and Yemenis too hard for access to imprisoned al-Qaeda operatives who had information that might have prevented the 9/11 attacks.

Now that they are back in power, their delicacy in the face of evil will increase the likelihood of more attacks on Americans on American soil. As liberal Democrats always do, their apparent weakness will embolden our enemies, and will thereby force us into wider wars that would be prevented by showing and using cold steel from the beginning. Obama is already playing into the hands of our enemies by snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in strategically vital Iraq, in order to make the catastrophic blunder of widening the war in strategically insignificant Afghanistan and Pakistan, where our brave kids are forced to fight with one hand tied behind their back among a hostile population, in terrain that completely negates the benefits of their superior weaponry and technology. Afghanistan is a hellishly arid and mountainous desert analog to Vietnam. It brought the mighty Soviet Army to its knees. It may ours. We MUST continue to focus our energies on Iraq, where we have already won but could easily lose if we take our eye off the real prize: strategic dominance of the Persian Gulf.

Once Obama screws it all up, as he inevitably will, perhaps another Reagan will come along to set things straight, at least for a little while. Sadly, it will only come after the American people are reminded by another 9/11, on a much larger scale, that the economy is NOT the top priority, after all, and that the only reason they feel comfortable with a leftist weanie like Obama is that, for all his many faults, Bush did one thing very well: he prevented another 9/11.

George W Bush released all the Muslim terrorists from Gitmo well before he left office, so they would cause trouble for Obama and get Sarah Palin elected in 2012. In exchange, Palin will deed over the mineral rights for the entire State of Alaska to George W Bush! The only prisoners at Gitmo now are ACORN voter registration workers. These people have been tortured on George W Bush's orders, by forcing them to watch Dik Cheney hunting videos! So now as a result they are terrorist lunatics!!!

"I doubt if the Obama administration is going to simply free more than half of the detainees at Gitmo. "

You should try to convince the Obama administration that they are not going to do what they have said they will do.

There are 245 detainees in Gitmo.

"The thorniest problem for Obama is dealing with about 100 detainees. They're considered dangerous Islamists and include accused Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four alleged al Qaeda accomplices.

The remaining detainees are likely to be released according to Obama administration sources. Jeh Johnson, Obama's lead advisor on the fate of Guantanamo detainees, has recommended that 100 be brought to the United States and turned over to civilian courts. The fate of the other 145 detainees has not been finalized, but sources in the Obama administration have reported that any detainees not being prosecuted will be released. Many are likely to be released into the United States, as their own countries refuse to accept them. "

Do the math Davies. 145 out of 245 are being released.

rickg19611: Generally if you are quoting someone, the source of the quote is clear, or you make it known. But let's say your information is right. 145 or so are released, many into the United States. Do you think that is the end of the problem for Obama then? You think no one in his administration is cognizant of the fact that any terrorist he releases, who then commits another act of terror or other heinous crime here, is going to be a tremendous political liability for the Democratic Party?

As far as I can tell, keeping these guys in Gitmo was the easiest and safest thing to do, and Obama's campaign promises may prove to be very difficult to uphold. So I'll stick with my own guess: only a token few will actually be released, most if not all to other countries, so that the swooning lefties will be appeased. As for the others, putting them on trial will be an enormous headache as well. The loony left will want them tried like U.S. citizens, which means if we don't have evidence that they were read their rights back in Afghanistan, they should be released. Meanwhile Obama knows that's not going to play too well to the other 90% of the country. These trials will be media circuses. The charges will be made known, and if somebody is freed on a legal technicality, you can bet it will be news. So it won't be easy for Obama's administration, and even the lefties (if they pay attention) will realize it's not as simple as it seems.

I do not agree with what Obama wants to do. Keeping innocent Americans safe is more important than the so called "rights" of suspected terrorists. If he wants to release them, release them in the middle of the ocean.

Putting these prisoners on US soil is one of the most insane ideas in years. Here's an idea if we are forced to bring them into the USA, reopen Alcatraz, change the law to allow it to become a working prison again. Our government is good at changing laws if it suits their agenda. The prison is still somewhat functional, we have a year to bring it back to it's former glory. Plus, these are desert people, not good swimmers. Here's the best part of this deal, it's in California and Pelosi can stop by for visits to make sure the prisoners are not uncomfortable in any way, shape or form. The bleeding heart liberals will love this idea !

Hey, RoyalPayne, I think yours is the best idea of all. The hajiis might save us the problem of their perpetual care and feeding and go for a very short swim out of sheer desperation. Sure would make for great reality TV.
