Broncos give Bates OK to talk with Raiders

Broncos quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates has been granted permission by the team to talk with the Oakland Raiders about a job on that team's coaching staff.
Raiders owner Al Davis, who has been hospitalized in recent weeks, has been interviewing head-coaching candidates. The Raiders sought, in writing, and were granted permission to speak with Bates about a role on a new coaching staff, possibly even head coach.
Bates, 32, just finished his first season as the Broncos' primary play-caller. Quarterback Jay Cutler set a franchise single-season record for yards passing and earned his first Pro Bowl trip.
Bates is one of four offensive assistants from Mike Shanahan's former staff, in addition to Rick Dennison, Bobby Turner and Jedd Fisch, who are slated to meet with new coach Josh McDaniels to stay on the staff.
However, McDaniels has already said he will call plays in the Broncos' offense, so Bates' role moving forward could be limited to coaching the quarterbacks and participating in the game planning.
Turner and Dennison met with McDaniels on Tuesday.
Bates is out of town and could not be reached for comment.

You know, sometimes it's best just to complete the surgery you've begun. Jeremy Bates deserves a chance to shine, although it would sicken me if he did so with the Faders, and he's just not going to get that with this new coaching staff in place; so I think it speaks well of the Broncos to let him shop his talents around the league. Hopefully he'll have a long, successful career in the NFC and win every Super Bowl the Broncos Don't. Thanks for your hard work on our behalf, Jeremy, and good luck in the future!

Let him go, he wasn't that great of a play caller. How many times did he call the #%$& bubble screen against the Chargers after it didn't work and then finally the interception. Anyone watching the game saw that the dolts had that play sniffed out.

Face it folks, we can say goodbye to Bates and Turner. McDaniels is bringing in his offense and if you've ever watched the Pats, you know its pass first, and run only when you have to. Personally I hate it, but that is the way it goes. Look for both of these guys to resurface in Dallas with Shanny. I'm sadened by Bates and sick at loosing Turner. We will never have an effective running game again. So much for Torain, Hillis, Pittman, etc.

I think everyone will be surprised to see how well the offense can be without Bates. We might even actually score in the red zone! Jay will learn to be his own man and doesn't need his blankie (bates).
The playcalling was horrible last season, very predictable. And how can you have one guy (bates) running the pass game and another guy (dennison) running the ground attack? It should all work together under one coordinator? no wonder Mike got shana-caned! I say let Bates go to the Raduhs, we will know every play they make. They will go for the bubble screen a lot I'm sure.

I am excited to see the changes McDaniels can make for the offense. I guess Bates doesn't want to surrender his playcalling duties and has other offers to continue doing so. Makes sense and I really didn't see it like that before. Thanks JB...best wishes.
If he goes to the enemy, I hope our players, one-by-one (think Airplane), beat the living hell out of him when he cleans out his office.

OMG, let him go...more that half of Bate's playbook comes from the Patriot's 2007 game film. hmmm I wonder who drew up those plays? McDaniels! Better to have the real thing than a poser, who lacks creativity and doesn't make adjustments. In addition, Cutler's the same arrogant quarterback he was his first and second year. So don't give me any: well Cutler is so good now. He's not! Maybe Mcdaniels can turn that arrogance into intelligence. Peace

Am I the only one that can see this? Maybe I am wrong, but her goes...
Assuming McDaniels does bring in the type offensive system he ran in N.E. then the offensive players are in place.
1. Our o-line as it is now, pass blocks better than they run block. Case in point Clady, adequate and improving run blocker, fabulous and improving pass blocker. Even when teams knew that we had to throw they could not touch Cutler
2. Cutler has proven he can carry the load. This will let cutler be Cutler and grow.
3. With no proven durable back, running less is a good thing. Besides we don't have a proven back, not even our rookies are proven that they can play and not get hurt.
Also just because we have not heard from Cutler does not mean he is fuming, which I have read in some of these posts. He is probably doing what we all must do...wait and see. Besides Mr. B. said Cutler would have input. I doubt Cutler saw we hired the Offensive coordinator of the most proficient offense in history, and personal coach of Tom Brady and said, "I want none of that. I am out."
Think about it.

Hoppman I agree totaly. I screamed at my tv everytime I saw that play and not once did it work! Did it ever work at all? Our offense was a very base offense all season, no imagination at all. Let Bates go to the raiders and learn his leason the hard way. I think the McDaniels will make a better offensive coordinator anyways.
Bluebeard, you seam to forget about Elway's early years? He was labeled a cocky, arrogant brat and look where he is now. Get off the kids back, he has enough of a load to carry without a bunch of whiny babies carring on.

I'd bet he'd keep Turner. As good as the patsies have been the last few years, they haven't really had that good of a running game. McDaniels has to be thinking how much better his system would be with Turner's running game. If Bates does wind up with the faderz the first thing he really needs to do is Russell on a strict diet and make him get rid of all the bling and fur coats.

Hoppman, you are right on... the wide receiver screen? Huh? It would be one thing if it worked a couple of times, but every time BM touched the ball on the screen, he took steps backwards... can't believe they kept calling it...
I hope Cutler can embrace the idea of a new coach and isn't so stuck on Bates that he'll pout about it. McDaniels can take JC to the next level if he's receptive enough to let him do it. I'm OK with Bates staying on, but good grief, if he whines over playcalling duties, show him the door.

Bates called bubble screens for at least a couple reasons.
1. We had no running game
2. To make the safties beleive your going to run it again only to have Royal pretend to block than turn upfield and recieve a Cutler bomb for a possible touchdown.
You may have seen it work last weekend with Fitzgerald and Warner against Carolina.
It's called baiting and every team tries some form of it every game.
Bates did a fine job and should be proud of what he did here. But these things happen when you lose. Capable people lose their jobs when a new head coach comes in.

You can only bait a team so many times before they realize that you're not going deep. I did see that same play work against Carolina, but if you noticed, their play-calling was not as predicatable as what we were accustomed to seeing this season with the Broncos.

preacher_jmac, makes sense to me. He is being payed to do a job. He will adapt. As far as the RB's, Hillis showed the most promise and his injury was one that doesn't show me that he is "prone to injury." That was an injury that nobody would have walked away from. Give Torain a chance, as well. I think we have some young kids who deserve another chance on the field. I hope McDaniels is smart enough to see that and draft defense. If not, then he is disregarding every single thing that Bowlen asked and is becoming a Mike Shanahan and doing everything, his way. I hope he keeps the O intact? Obviously he is changing coaches. If he changes any of our best O players, he loses any of my fan support (like he cares, right, ha, ha).

I still have a Shanahan hangover. It is what it is. Nevertheless, we have a new coach. Change is imminent. So here we go. Don't "f" it up. We have been competitive, and we better stay that way. He said 8-8 was not acceptable, so we best see 9+ wins. If not, I will question this decision. I hope soon this forum is focusing on the draft. That is the next big thing we have to look at. In the meantime, go Iggles and Steelers. That is the SB I want to see. I have great respect for both Andy Reid and Mike Tomlin. And as much as I hate to say it, as much damage as they have done to us, it is sad to see Dungy go. Pure class. Some big changes to our NFL this offseason, before the final game has even been played. hopefully, they don't know each other that well
And of course, that is the only reason the Raiders want him on their staff. His inside knowledge of the Broncos.
Initially, I was worried about Cutler being upset about losing Bates, but you know what, he needs to get over it. He's supposed to be a professional and McD's record with QBs is pretty darn good.
