Romanowski wants chance at Broncos job
Associated Press
Published January 8, 2009 at 10:21 p.m.
Bill Romanowski has the perfect coaching candidate in mind for the Broncos, a dark horse, somebody out of the blue who's on nobody's radar - himself.
The former Pro Bowl linebacker who spends his post-playing days running a nutrition company and dabbling in broadcasting and acting told The Associated Press on Thursday night that he's serious about wanting a chance at coaching his old team.
He said he sent Broncos owner Pat Bowlen a lengthy PowerPoint presentation touting his credentials and outlining the fresh ideas he would bring to the job.
"I can't stop thinking about this," said Romanowski, who played for San Francisco, Philadelphia, Denver and Oakland during a standout 16-year career in the NFL.
"This may be a complete fantasy and that's all right. . . . At the end of the day, nothing may happen from it."

Highly unlikely.
His desire to coach, without experience, is not fair to the men interviewed who have toiled long and hard for the opportunity to become a head coach in the NFL.

How about Ken Norton Jr? He has coaching experience! He is coaching at USC under Pete Carroll. I still think they are the best team in the nation. Three Super Bowl rings, two Super Bowl teams(San Francisco and Dallas), we need someone who knows how to win and has been on winning teams with great offenses and defenses. Shanahan was at San Francisco (offensive coordinator) but he wasn't using many of their offensive plays very well. He didn't draft well. We need fullback that can catch the ball. A tight end that they actually use(like Shannon Sharpe), a good tailback, and two, not one receivers. The defense is lacking a large nose tackle, a great defensive end and a large defensive line. What happened? This team is lacking. It is going to take a few years to fix. Bill Walsh turned it around in San Fran but was great at finding talent.

C'mon people...Didn't you guys see his cameo in Get Smart?...No one hits on a stewardess as well as Romo...
In all seriousness...As usual, Romo's passion and enthusiasm have gotten a little bit away from him here--and I don't know that that's necessarily a bad thing. Pretty solid career for a guy with limited size/abilities.
Spitting thing was classless--as were other indiscretions--but there's far more guys on 'roids in the NFL than most ever want to admit. Not excusing it, just saying it's a slippery slope. Frankly, I think he deserves a little credit for having the stones to step forward, apologize and take the hits.
But I would say put Romo's passion to the test. Roids may have given him rage, but it never made him a 4.5 40 guy. His passion did that. Shanahan knew that guys like that help you win on the field and in the locker room. Be willing to bet he knows a lot about nuances of playing LB than most by virtue of maximizing his more limited abilities.
Let him coach LBs or special teams, as has been offered up here. If he sinks his teeth in, you'll find no one more committed to making it work...
Ask yourself this...Would you rather have our LBs play like Romo--even with the occassional over-the-line extracurricular hit--or continue to trot out the patsies we currently do every Sunday (not including Winborn or the rookie)?

Although Romo has made mistakes, he seems to be getting his life on track. Like him or hate him, he does deserve forgiveness and a chance to redeem himself.
As far as head coach, he lacks the experience to be seriously considered. He needs to start smaller as an assistant if this is an aspiration he is serious about.
However, the job is available and on the open market. Anyone can apply. We can't begrudge a man for wanting to follow a dream...if he is serious. I could apply to be CEO of a Fortune 500 company today if the position were open and I wanted it...I just might not get a call.
I'm just not sure where all the still remaining hostility toward Romo comes from. Although him being head coach is silly, he does deserve a chance to better himself. It's been over ten years since the spitting incident. At what point do we move on.

Also, if Rutabaga gets the HC job can I be a coordinator or something? I've watched a bunch of games too. I don't need to eat on the sidelines though, however a beer or two would be nice. Can't be at a Bronco game and not have a few beers, and maybe a stogie or two.

curoma First i drive a dodge second i read your previous comment i don't think he deserves a head coaching job i think the needs to earn his stripes. Not pushing for Him just defending the guy for brutal attacks on his character he retired hat 5 years ago which probably means seeing how much he has shrunk he has been off roids for 5 years .

No thanks. Romo you're better suited on the Pros vs Joes program if that rascal is still being made, that is, not that it should be in my estimation.
Typically speaking one wants a failure of a player to coach, not a good or even great NFL player, because they will not be able to understand why others cannot perform up to a standard they once set in their minds. The fellow or female who cannot make the grade undestands what they were missing -- enough talent. Besides, IMO, you and your wife should be in jail, not out there making money.
Thanks for your help in winning two Superbowls. Otherwise, adios, senior.
