He Said It

"You don't want to see no one go through injuries, period, but you don't want to see your boy go through it. I can say for him that, hopefully, make sure you get healthy and make sure you don't come back too soon."

Dwyane Wade, Miami guard, on the injury to good friend Carmelo Anthony.

It didn't take long for Nuggets swingman Sonny Weems to be fined a second time this season for being late.

Coach George Karl said he fined the rookie for being late to Wednesday's shootaround, a day after being called up from the NBA Development League's Colorado 14ers.

"It was a good entry for a rook to be late for his first day back," cracked Karl, who said Weems claimed miscommunication regarding Denver's shootaround and practice times.

"My plans got mixed up with somebody telling me a different time," said Weems, who wouldn't reveal who told him and shrugged off the fine by saying Karl's "the coach and can do what he wants."

Weems went to the 14ers on Dec. 10. He said it's "great to be back."

ROTATING STARTERS

With Carmelo Anthony missing his first game after being ruled out three to four weeks because of a broken hand, Karl started Linas Kleiza at small forward.

The move primarily was to match up better with Miami's Shawn Marion, and Karl said Anthony's replacement will be named on a game-by-game basis.

Karl said Kleiza likely will start Friday against Detroit, although J.R. Smith could get the nod if the Pistons start three guards.

"I feel good about (starting), but I don't put a big emphasis on it," Kleiza said.
