— La Plata County District Attorney Craig Westberg is "fighting for his life" after he was injured in a mountain biking accident in Arizona last weekend, a colleague said Tuesday.

The 64-year-old Westberg, whose term ends on Jan. 13, is in critical condition in a Phoenix hospital, Assistant District Attorney Kim Kitchen said.

"He had a horrible accident," Kitchen said. "He's pretty much fighting for his life." She didn't know the details of the accident.

Westberg did not run for re-election. Todd Risberg, who was elected in November to succeed him, was sworn in as a deputy district attorney on Monday to help out until he takes office next week.

Kitchen said Westberg and Risberg previously decided that Risberg should join the staff early to make the transition smooth.

Westberg is chief prosecutor for the 6th Judicial District, which includes Archuleta and San Juan counties along with La Plata.

He pleaded guilty in December to driving under the influence of a sleeping pill. He lost his driving privileges for a year and was ordered to serve 10 days of home detention, perform public service and pay court costs and restitution.

First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers are that Mr. Westberg has a quick and complete recovery.

Second, one would think that there would be more details about the accident. Typical of what one has come to expect in this day and age of poor journalism. If there are no details available about the accident, than mention that fact. Yes, I am aware this is from AP, figures.
