Regional scene: Steamboat's Spillane 12th in Nordic

Steamboat Springs skier Johnny Spillane finished 12th in a World Cup Nordic combined event Sunday at Schonach, Germany, after posting the fastest time in the 10-kilometer cross- country sprint.
Vermontville, N.Y., resident Bill Demong finished second in the overall event, giving him his third podium finish this season and moving him up to second in the overall standings, behind winner Anssi Koivuranta of Finland.
Demong gave the United States its fifth straight Nordic combined podium finish in World Cup individual events. Todd Lodwick, of Steamboat Springs, finished 14th. Nordic combined events consist of ski jumping and cross-country skiing.
"Bill had a great race, he was fast the whole way, and in the final sprint he was able to maintain second. It was great for him," U.S. Nordic combined coach Chris Gilbertson said.
* Vail skier Abby Ghent won the women's giant slalom in the Colorado Junior Ski Cup competition at Breckenridge and Steamboat Springs resident Max Marno won the men's giant slalom.
Vail resident Christa Ghent, Abby's older sister, won the women's giant slalom Saturday and Vail athlete John Kemp won the men's giant slalom.
RUSH TRUMPS RAGE Derek Le blanc's overtime goal lifted the Rapid City Rush to a 5-4 victory against the Rocky Mountain Rage in a Central Hockey League game Sunday at the Broomfield Event Center.
Brent Cullaton and David Morelli each registered two assists for the Rage.
* Denver resident Nick Shore scored a goal to help the U.S. Under-17 hockey team record a 7-0 victory against Canada West at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge tournament on Friday in Oceanside, British Columbia.
The U.S. clinched the tournament's bronze medal with a 4-2 win against Canada West on Sunday in Port Alberni, British Columbia.
VANDIVER REDSHIRTS University of Wyoming junior women's basketball guard Aubrey Vandi- ver will redshirt this season because of illness.
Vandiver, the daughter of former University of Colorado men's basketball standout Shaun Vandiver, has been battling mononucleosis throughout much of the young season, according to the (Casper) Star-Tribune.
GRIZZLIES TAKE TITLES Arsenia Barksdale (125 pounds), Raymond Dunning (141 pounds) and Pomona High School graduate Noomis Jones (149 pounds) each won individual titles as the Adams State wrestling team managed to finish fourth at the Midwest Classic tournament in Indianapolis.
