Can cranberry juice cure a urinary-tract infection?
Some people swear by this home remedy, but it's not something that's going to work for everyone.
The American Urological Association says UTIs account for 8 million doctor visits a year. The group recommends that people seek medical treatment if they have UTI symptoms - frequent painful urination, cloudy or strong-smelling urine and possibly blood in the urine.
But here's an interesting twist: The AUA says cranberries can actually help prevent UTIs from happening. Apparently, the fruit's high acid content can help inhibit bacterial growth along the urinary tract.
UTIs happen when bacteria enter the urinary tract and multiply in the urethra; that bacteria might ultimately lead to bladder or kidney infections, both of which can lead to serious conditions.
So chug that cranberry juice and have another helping of cranberry sauce or any other cranberry-licious dish. The AUA says drinking plenty of water also can help avert UTIs. Don't delay urination, and don't rush it; failing to completely empty your bladder can increase your risk.
