An attorney says he won't pursue legal action for now against the University of Colorado over a $3,000 fee charged to three student groups hosting an appearance by former Weather Underground member Bill Ayers and fired CU professor Ward Churchill.

Attorney David Lane says he's refraining from taking court action because the university has agreed not to charge the students before the event. Lane says the fee is exorbitant and an unconstitutional restraint on free speech.

CU-Boulder spokesman Bronson Hilliard says the groups aren't being singled out and it's standard to charge the fee to cover security costs for large events.

He says the students will still get charged later.

Lane says if that happens, the school should send the bill to him so he "could show them the price of freedom."

Ayers and Churchill are scheduled to speak at a March 5 event.

Ayers, a University of Illinois- Chicago professor, featured prominently in Republican efforts to thwart Barack Obama's presidential campaign.

Churchill was fired on plagiarism allegations after he equated some Sept. 11 victims to a Nazi.

If their statement that this is a standard fee for security for large gatherings is true, then why should they drop it for anyone, least of all someone who is likely to draw some serious protests. If they must drop it, then they should require that the lawyer, Ayers, and Churchill all sign releases, in case something does happen to them. Then we'd only have to worry about innocent bystanders. By the way, this is one security job I would not take.

Double the GD fee for every 24 hours that passes leading up to the event and if the fee total is not paid in full in the form of a cashiers check at least 48 hours in advance the event is cancelled. Also, have them put up a $250,000 bond just in case something happens. "Free" speech ain't free when their are fixed costs involved. If they want "free" speech than have them get on a freakin' soapbox down on the Boulder Mall. I am so sick of Ayers and Churchill and Lane. Great question about their speaking fees.

Thank you David Lane for the message you are sending. Higher Ed, and the University of Colorado in particular, wonders why the public doesn't support its constant demand for more money and then insults us by inviting such people. I don't care if the money is paid for by "student fees." These fees could be better used to serve the students in positive ways. Instead, Ward Churchill, who is a proven fraud, is continually supported and publicized and William Ayers, an unapologic criminal, are both given a platform to speak to our youth and will receive a considerable amount of publicity by the media. Colorado taxpayers do remember such events when asked for support..

This whole thing is amazing. Churchill: writes something incredibly stupid, draws attention to himself, and is summarily exposed and fired for what was brought to light, not what he wrote (glass houses). Sues university, which has to spend thousands if not millions to get rid of this walking piece of (think Mr. Hanky, South Park). Idiot students, majoring in the joke wing of Arts & Sciences that love Churchill because he taught like three times a semester, had one easy test and most got A's, bring in confirmed and unrepentant terrorist, costing school more money.

The athletic department generates (primarily through football) revenue to provide security at all athletic functions, including those which don't draw much fan paid (or even free in some instances) attendance. They also pay for security at many quasi athletic functions like pep rallies, etc.

Virtually all assembly type functions, including in this definition, athletic events, which draw spectators from diverse demographics need security. Nowadays emotions can run high even at poetry readings, and whack jobs run in abundance in our society. Protection for audiences are a necessity.

Someone has to pay for the security and it should rightfully be the parties or entities responsible for creating and supporting the event.

How appropriate that, what appears to be the last story posted by the Rocky Mountain News, is one that reflects on freedom of speech.

Churchill was nothing like his namesake, a forgettable plagiarist who when he came up with his own comments could only slander the dead. But where better to learn about freedom of speech than at a University?

Once upon a time Universities were thought it was appropriate to speak offensive, alien ideas - where students could hear a wide diversity of opinions and learn tolerance, or to think for themselves.

How quaint that a democracy would only be safe when people learned to hear all sides and think for themselves. Kind of like the same reason we have freedom of the press - isn't it?

But to read these blogs - one says RMN is gone for being too liberal - the next because they supported Bush for two elections. And then anything but tolerance for ideas are the focus of the adjectives that flow.

    And so it goes.

Down to the end, right in the middle of it, covering what is Colorado, and offering other voices a chance to be heard.
