AT ISSUE: Swastika sign at rally very suspicious

I'm surprised that the Rocky Mountain News didn't challenge the circumstances around the anti-Obama "swastika" sign at the recent downtown rally opposing the stimulus package ("Columnist isn't smiling over swastika in rally photo," Feb. 18).

Certainly the Rocky remembers Carol Kreck, the 61-year-old librarian who was arrested at the John McCain rally June 7 for holding the "McCain = Bush" sign at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

Under later questioning, Kreck admitted that the sign was given to her by a staff member for ProgressNow.org, who also provided a photographer to capture the reaction.

Doesn't the event at the recent rally seem a little odd? Since ProgressNow.org seems to have the only photo evidence of the sign, doesn't it seem possible that the sign holder is a plant, or perhaps a rube who complied when asked to hold the sign and pose for a picture?

Anything associated with ProgressNow.org needs to be researched for accuracy. They have again displayed their extreme bias and willingness to "create" news events to support their agenda.

    I saw the guy with the sign standing at the edge of the crowd, and then I saw Michael Huttner of Progress Now Colorado and his friend Jason Salzman (a columnist for the Rocky) approach the guy and photograph him.

    Occam would council that we take the sign at face value: a guy on the right doing what people on the left have been doing for years and calling their opponents Nazis.

    Meanwhile, the rallier's organizers, who had no control over who attended this rally on public property, were busy running their rally, so they simply didn't pay the guy any attention.

    I vote we drop the conspiracy theories and get back to real issues. For instance, listen to Huttner try to explain why he opposed Bush's so-called "stimulus" package but supported the one by Obama. It's worth a chuckle.

    Ari: Bush's stimuls package was just that... stimulus. It was NOT full of earmarks and pet projects like Obama's. I know the bill was penned by his cronies but it reflects Obama's wishes.
