GOP lawmaker calls Caldara, Hillman, 'losers' and 'has beens'

A prominent GOP lawmaker has gone rogue and will attempt to do away with a decades-old spending limit without any support from his party, the top House Republican said Wednesday.
Rep. Don Marostica shot back, however, that legislative leaders are being influenced by "has- beens" and "losers" within the party and that he is going ahead with his efforts.
Marostica, R-Loveland, will introduce a measure today to remove the 6 percent general-fund spending limit, known as Arveschoug-Bird, that has been in place since 1991. He will sponsor it with Sen. John Morse, D-Colorado Springs.
The law was passed to restrain government growth in boom years, but critics say that when the budget shrinks during recessions, Arveschoug-Bird ensures departments like higher education and human services can never recover. Some legal opinions say it can be repealed by statute, but others say it can only be changed by a vote of the people.
Marostica said at an event two weeks ago that he would push for repeal of the limit. At the time, Minority Leader Mike May said it would be tied to another bill that would dedicate a specific percentage of the budget to transportation. But that road- funding bill appears doomed, and May, R-Parker, had hoped Marostica would pull his support for the spending-limit repeal.
May said he also thought that Marostica's bill would let voters decide whether to repeal the limit.
According to Marostica, May came under pressure from conservatives including Independence Institute President Jon Caldara and former state Treasurer Mark Hillman to oppose the bill and called Marostica in for two meetings Tuesday. He denied that May threatened to yank him from his position on the powerful Joint Budget Committee if he didn't drop the bill, but he said he was told that GOP Senate leaders were furious.
"There's great concern whenever you're in a leadership position (like Marostica) and this happens," May said. "To head off without the rest of your troops is not a wise action."
Marostica acknowledged that he might not get support from another legislative Republican but said he's going to move ahead with the bill. He questioned why May was taking advice from people like Caldara and Hillman.
"They're has-beens. They're losers," Marostica said.

If Marostica wants to spend money without limits, he should change to the Democrat party. Many Republicans have lost sight of one of the base principles of our party - limit governmental spending.
There are too many items in the budget that don't need to have governmental support. Kill those items, and re-assign the money to education or transportation. Don't just take more money from the taxpayers to satisfy a want.
Look at the last 8 years of our national government. Republicans didn't stick to principles, so the budget got out of control. It is time to reel-in governmental spending.

Congrats to Rep. Marostica, he has it exactly right. Andrews, Hillman and Caldara had their chance at running the government and they ran it right into the ground. None of these guys would have a chance in hell of ever getting elected, but they think they can still run things from the back room. If you ever want to know why the Democrats came back in power after years of being the minority all you have to do as look at the work of guys like Caldara & Hillman. Citizens figured them out for the Libertarian whacko’s that they are.
So, let’s hear it for some intelligence and actual problem solving from a Republican. Don has a good idea to get things moving for the people of Colorado. I just hope he can hold up from the smear campaign that should be starting today on Rosen’s radio show.

If TABOR had not been suspended, CO would not be in the minor mess it faces now (compared to CA). Further removal of spending limits only assures that CO will become another CA, NJ, or NY - low growth, high unemployment, high taxes.
Also, Marostica's personal attacks on free market think tank leaders only prove the bankrupt intellect behind his socialist plan.

Like which items? Oh, health care for the less fortunate? Well, you will pay for them one way or another. Which do you prefer, through government that you can influence, or through your health insurance premiums plus 10% for the CEO's salary? Oh, social services? I suppose all good Republicans want to see homeless children begging on street corners and living in cardboard boxes. Otherwise, how could they give them a dollar and feel good about their eternal salvation?
For too long, the Republicans have told us we can have a free lunch (not exactly a value)- be "compassionate" and conservative. There isn't such a thing. If you want to create a level playing field for everyones' children, there are things you have to pay, like taxes.
I am amazed at the anti-business attitude of so many Republicans... it is our educated workforce, our community-mindedness, and our infrastructure that led us to our former economic greatness. Our fear of "socialism" has allowed 10 "socialist" countries to become richer (per capita) than us over the past 30 years.

Actually, overspending and borrowing causes debt. Your statement seems to inherently presuppose that taxes should always keep up with spending, rather than limiting spending to keep up with the budget.
"How about taxing what has money? The conservatives don't want to tax the rich, as if they can't afford to pay."
No, it's just that we don't believe people who work hard and make a lot of money are evil. We also don't think that people who have more money be forced to subsidize the rest of the population simply because of a liberal ideology that says that anyone who makes more money than me is "rich" and therefore evil and corrupt. I'm not sure why Rep. Marostica resorted to name calling. Maybe he was having a bad day. A lot of times though it's a sign of someone who doesn't want to actually delve into the issue itself and address it. I don't blame him for that. I believe that one digs into it, the money is there for different programs. Our most recent proposed state budget was over $19 billion dollars. It was a 5% increase at time when inflation is if not negative, barely above zero.
The problems are two fold. The first is that some programs like medicaid and other similar entitlement programs are seeing huge increases in spending. This is having an impact on money left over for other programs.
The other problem is there are few politicians who are willing to admit this. They would rather chase after TABOR or anything else they can falsely accuse of being the problem. And they hate that they have to prioritize spending according to what resources they have. Remember, in politics there is often much to gain and little to loose by making sure some small but vocal group gets what it wants.
I don't blame the for doing this. Finding solutions for issues like the run away costs of medicaid are not easy. And in terms of politics there are a lot of risks involved. Nevertheless, the root issues need to be addressed. Politicians need to show that they're not simply pandering for votes but willing and capable to be leaders.
That said, one other thing about Tabor, there is a flip side to not having spending restrictions enforced on politicians. We could end up like California were even in the face of recession they're not only slashing some spending but committing economic suicide in raising a variety of taxes. Why? Because they have $42 billion dollar budget deficit to close. Now one may see "well, these things happen". But they were in this pickle @5 years ago and they've gone and done it again. That is despite the 5 years ago a gov essentially being fired for it and another coming into office promising to clean things up. Without a constitutional limit on spending, eventually the politicians will put us into the same position as California is today. And as they've shown there, they'll keep doing it over and over again.

I am so thrilled Marostica is actually trying to solve some of these problems. Who remembers the representative who held the seat prior to Marostica? ... WELKER!!! Remember the headlines he caused? Racist emails ring a bell anyone? Thankfully we finally have someone actually attempting to be a part of the solution -- regardless of if you agree with him. This Loveland resident is satisfied.

Please don't characterize all Democrats as tax and spend. I do think I see some budget problems and the comments so far would put about a nickle back in the state budget. Any other ideas?

Rinos, Winos, lack-o-spinos, whatever. Republicans cannibalizing Republicans who have cannibalized Republicans. It's not like Goldwater didn't warn you where the party was headed about twenty years ago.
My kingdom for a Goldwater.

Please NeoCons, keep throwing out everyone out of the GOP who dares question your failed policies and your blind idology... Soon it will just be Rush and a few dittoheads left in the GOP!
Please keep making sure you keep shrinking that "big tent", it will keep you irrelevant and nothing more than a fringe party for decades to come! Thank you all for being shortsighted and narrowminded. LOL... Keep turning away more and more members who you don't consider "TRUE CONSERVATIVES"...
Problem is most of you aren't "true conservatives". Most of you are NeoCons... if you were "true conservatives", we would have been hearing all this whinning and crying when Bush was deficit spending 5 times as much money and putting this country into debt at record levels!
But please, don't let me get in the way of your ex-communication of the "infidels" among you in the NeoCon cult of failure and fairy tales... I'm rather enjoying watching you tear each other apart!

Traditionally, liberals have supported a large government actively involved in society on every level. They placed the benefit of the people as a whole over the interests of the individual, by promoting social welfare programs for the poor and higher taxes on the rich to cover the cost.
Conservatives are exactly the opposite. They supported a smaller, centralized government that strictly enforced the law, but otherwise tended to refrain from intervening in affairs of the individual or in the economy. They strongly supported Adam Smith’s concept of capitalism, which suggested that the economy should be primarily regulated by the laws of supply and demand.
These concepts have less and less to do with the current agendas of either party.
Obama ran and won the campaign on change. All Obama changed was which political party would dole out American taxpayer monies.
