Quiznos adopts new PETA-backed food policies

The Quiznos sandwich chain said Tuesday it has adopted a new animal-welfare policy for the eggs, pork and turkey it buys.

The Denver-based chain said it came up with the policy in conjunction with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

"We are always trying to find new ways to be better corporate citizens, and we'll continue to seek those ways," Quiznos spokesman Joe Hodas said.

Quiznos will buy more eggs from cage-free chickens, more pork raised in crate-free environments and more turkeys that are killed using a method that PETA described as more humane, in which the birds' oxygen supply is replaced by other gases. The chain also removed eggs from three of its four cookies on the menu.

The changes will be phased in, and purchasing preference will be given to suppliers who use cage- or crate-free systems.

PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich says his group still prefers diners buy Quiznos' vegetarian sandwich, but he praised the chain for the new standards.

Privately held Quiznos has about 5,000 U.S. stores.

I, for one, will not be buying my sandwiches from Quizno's.
PETA is an extremely radical fringe organization that has equated the killing of chickens for human consumption to the Nazi Holocaust.
Quizno's collaboration with PETA does nothing but legitimize an organization that is on the lunatic fringe. It doesn't make Q's a good corporate citizen, it makes them an ideological pawn.
It may be that the Vegans will now be swarming Quizno's for lunch and politically correct conversation, but I think I will stick with the double meat at Subway or Jimmy Johns.

I am glad that the People (for the) Eating (of) Tasty Animals approves. As their approval is highly reguarded among the American public. Biggest a bunch of hypocrites in the world.

What a joke. Cross Quiznos off my list too. I wonder though if this applies to corporate locations only, or if franchisees are also expected to embrace the PETA gun that is being held to their temples?

I never ate at Quiznos to begin with but I would've started if they would've rejected the demands from these lunatics. They could've gained a customer but instead they lost one forever. I'm quite sure they will lose more business than they will gain from this. Bad business decision!!!

You need to boycott KFC, Safeway, McDonalds, Wendys, Burger King and many others. All have been influenced by PETA and/or the Humane Society.

As a USDA licensed wild game processor (during season-it's an extra cash, family affair "hobby"), I have little in common with the PETA folks. But I do appreciate the attention they bring to the factory farming issues and the generally disgusting environment most of our food comes from. I feel "happy" animals will be healthier animals...healthier for us to consume.

If you're happy with all the recalls and the management of our food supply, then best of luck to you. Ignorance is bliss...until you or a loved one is affected. If you're not happy, or you are clueless about where your food comes from, I suggest you research our factory food industry.

Folks that don't care about an animals welfare surely don't care about our welfare...they're just too stupid to know any better. If you don't mind a side of salmonella, e. coli or a Frankenstein mixture of antibiotics with your meal, then move on.

Looks like they have seen their last dollar out of me and my family. Too bad, because I really enjoyed their sandwiches. But, as a hunter, I can choose to cease spending money at a company that will buckle under to pressure from extremist organizations.
