Despite reports, maker, agencies defend Gardasil

Ashley Ryburn, 16, sits with her mother, Lisa Holtman, at their home in Arvada. Until a year ago, Ashley was an active, healthy teenager. Since receiving the Gardasil vaccine to prevent cervical cancer, however, Ashley has suffered seizures, headaches, nausea, dizziness and paralysis.
Suddenly, Ashley Ryburn was sick all the time, and her mother didn't understand why.
Ashley, 16, played four sports, danced in her high school's show choir and earned top grades without even trying.
But now, Ashley was exhausted all the time. She was nauseated. She passed out at show choir and blacked out at school.
And then one day Ashley's legs went numb. She couldn't walk.
"You see somebody touch your legs and you can't feel it," Ashley recalled. "That's the scariest thing in the world."
For a year this has gone on: four episodes of temporary paralysis. Back spasms so painful Ashley would tell her mom "bye" and stop breathing. Hospitalizations. More 911 calls than Ashley can count. Trip after trip to doctors who couldn't seem to find anything wrong.
"I've heard so many times I'm crazy, I'm bulimic, I'm on drugs," Ashley said. "It's not your first thought that it's a vaccine."
A vaccine? Lisa Holtman is convinced that's what turned her perfectly healthy daughter into a chronically ill teenager.
In August and October 2007, Ashley was given doses of Gardasil, a vaccine recommended for adolescent girls to prevent cervical cancer. Her first Gardasil shot was given in conjunction with a meningitis vaccine.
The combination is said to be safe - and is commonly administered - but Gardasil was never clinically tested with the meningitis vaccine.
Research from the National Vaccine Information Center indicates reactions to Gardasil increase when it is given with the meningitis shot. But Neal Halsey, director of the Institute for Vaccine Safety at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, said general guidelines allow for two or three inactivated vaccines, such as the HPV and meningitis vaccines, to be given at the same time without expecting increased rates of adverse reactions.
The meningitis vaccine was not available when Gardasil began clinical testing, so the Food and Drug Administration agreed to test it post-licensure, Halsey said.
Results of those tests are expected to be released soon.
"There is no reason that I know of that there may be an increased risk of any serious complications associated with the simultaneous administration of these two inactive or killed vaccines," Halsey said in a recent interview.
Ashley didn't receive any other shots with her second dose of Gardasil. It was a month or so after the second Gardasil vaccine that she started getting sick.
"She didn't go to the doctor at all, then after she got the shots, it's boom, boom, boom," Holtman said. "We haven't stopped."
Across the country, there are reports of girls like Ashley becoming chronically ill, and even dying, after being vaccinated with Gardasil - raising questions about whether the vaccine is indeed safe and if there has been enough testing done on its side effects.
Gardasil, manufactured by Merck and Co., was licensed in 2006 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Merck both say the vaccination is safe. So does Dr. Judith Shlay, director of the immunization and travel clinic at Denver Health Medical Center.
Shlay says Denver Health administers thousands of vaccines each year, including Gardasil, and rarely has any problems. The biggest issue with Gardasil was reports of adolescent girls fainting, but Shlay said Denver Health devised a protocol that involved monitoring teens before they left and that has alleviated the concern.
"It's considered a very safe vaccine," Shlay said. "We haven't seen people get sick from it."
As of Aug. 31, the federal Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) had logged 10,326 reports of reactions to Gardasil, according to the CDC. Of those reports, 94 percent were considered to be "nonserious."
The serious reports included Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare disorder that causes muscle weakness, blood clots and death. Each incident was "carefully analyzed by medical experts," the CDC said in a report last updated in October.
"Experts have not found a common medical pattern to the reports of serious adverse events reported for Gardasil that would suggest that they were caused by the vaccine," the CDC said.
'No safety issue'
Merck issued its own statement in July, saying it was "proud of the public health benefit that Gardasil can provide in helping to prevent cervical cancer" and maintaining that "no safety issue related to the vaccine has been identified."
Still, in 2007 and 2008, Gardasil accounted for about 20 percent of reactions reported to VAERS, said Barbara Loe Fisher, co- founder and president of the National Vaccine Information Center, a watchdog group in Virginia.
Fisher calls the percentage "unusual" given that Gardasil is new and isn't mandated.
"This is a whitewash of this vaccine. To say that almost 10,000 reports of reactions, injuries, 30 deaths is all a coincidence is simply not scientifically responsible," Fisher said. "You have perfectly healthy girls go in and get this shot and then suffer a pattern, a very clear pattern of injury, and some of them are dying. This is not acceptable."
The side effects all look a lot like what's been happening to Ashley, Fisher said: brain inflammation, immune system dysfunction, tingling and numbness in the hands, feet and legs, severe headaches, strokes, joint pain, muscle weakness, seizures and memory loss.
"Usually, these girls are very high functioning," Fisher said. "They're honor roll students. They're athletes. They're usually in extremely good health before they have a severe downward turn after receiving one or more Gardasil vaccinations."
But Halsey, of the Institute for Vaccine Safety, said people need to be "very careful not to jump on the bandwagon" that vaccines caused illness. Such allegations have surfaced before only to be disproved in resulting studies.
Serious allergic reactions to the HPV vaccine are rare, about one in a million, putting them in "the same ballpark" as any other vaccine, Halsey said.
"The evidence does not support a causal relationship," he said. "It's much more likely to be coincidental."
Can't go back
Still, Ashley's life looks nothing like it did before Gardasil. Her days consist mostly of going to school, coming home and sleeping. Her hair falls out in clumps. Her nausea is ever present. Her blood pressure drops dangerously low. She can't breathe.
Ashley looks back on pictures of summer camp just before she received the first Gardasil shot. She is saddling horses, hoisting a counselor for fun and leg wrestling.
"It hurts to know that if I went back to that day in my health now, I couldn't do it," Ashley said. "I can't do those things anymore."
Ashley received her vaccinations in Iowa before she and her mother moved to Arvada. It was recommended during a routine physical. Since then, Ashley has had to quit sports and her grades have slipped from A's and B's to B's and C's. Most of the time, she can't remember what she's read from one day to the next.
When she tried out for basketball at her high school this year, her legs were shaking and she couldn't breathe after two drills. Ashley cried.
She takes a handful of pills every day and has to carry a special bag of medical supplies in case she has an "episode."
Even when Ashley has good days, she knows the twitches in her back and the funny feeling in the back of her head will always come back, signaling another episode. Her blood pressure will plummet. She will hear her mother or her boyfriend talking to her, but she won't be able to answer. She will have trouble breathing and she will pass out.
"If I had never got the shot, I would be a normal teenager," Ashley said. "I wish I could go back."
Genital human papillomavirus (HPV)

* Several states, including Colorado, have introduced legislation mandating the vaccine for girls entering the sixth grade. Only Washington, D.C., and Virginia have passed the mandates, to take effect in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
* Colorado has had no reports of serious reactions to the vaccine, according to Joni Reynolds, immunization program director for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
* The Institute of Medicine is about to convene a two-year study of injuries and deaths related to four vaccines, including HPV.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you and your daughter. It has happened to us and my daughter too. Unfortunately she was only 15 months at the time and was injured by the MMR and Dtap vaccines. Brain inflammation, immune system malfunction, CNS disorders are all the beasts in the shadows of vaccines. The unwillingness of vaccine manufactures to admit these reactions is criminal. Once you have lived through it, there is little doubt. There are many pioneers in the field of treating vaccine injury. It is unfortunately a field that is growing in leaps and bounds. My 19 year old daughter has also suffered from a severe adverse reaction from Gardasil. Prior to this shot she was healthy and active. After the shot her back started hurting immediately and had her first seizure about three weeks after the first shot. After the second shot the seizures increased, as did severe stomach pains, fatigue, head aches, joint pains, vision problems, hair loss and bleeding gums. She's been hospitalized four times, multiple ambulance calls, daily seizures, several incidents of cluster seizures where she stopped breathing and turned blue. I know all of this was caused by Gardasil and nobody will convince me otherwise. My daughter seems to be improving as time goes by, it has been 10 months since the first shot. Thankfully, we did not get the third shot or I truly believe she would not be with us today. I think there are more young ladies out there that have reacted and just don't know why their health has declined. We live in NM and I know of 5 unexplained deaths in our area alone where healthy young women have died after getting this vaccine. This needs to stop, not enough is known about this vaccine.

My Daughter also had the shot in Aug 2007 and has been sick ever since. She has had several hospital stays, see's a Neurologist on a reg basis, has been diagnosed with Disautonomia with Orthostatic Intolerance (inability to control her blood pressure and heart rate at the same time), has blackouts, chronic dizziness, and takes massive anxiety medicines now. She looses clumps of her hair, has blurred vision, migraine headaches, nausea and panic attacks. Her immune system has been so compromised that she has gotten MRSA (Resistant Staff) 2 times now and been hospitalized for that as well. She was also an honor student (straight A's) with a very bright future. Her grades have dramatically dropped. We have had to put her on a plan at school so that her attendance cannot be held against her and her teachers have to reduce her work load because she doesn't know from one day to the next whether she will be able to get out of bed! I have watched my thriving once very healthy Daughter struggle daily to stay alive. Do NOT get your Daughters this Vaccine!!!! I am still hoping someday I will get my Daughter back from all of this.

This vaccine was fast-tracked and approved in 6 months, hardly adequate for long-term or large-scale studies. The high amount of aluminum hydroxide in the vaccine is one possible factor; it is also found in the anthrax vaccine in high amounts and has been implicated in causing Gulf War Syndrome in U.S. troops receiving the vaccine. Aluminum toxicity should be one factor considered in cases of severe reaction.

I am sad to see such one-sided reporting. As a cervical cancer survivor, I cannot express the heartache and pain I have endured. Not only did this cancer change my life at an early age, but it left many serious health battles for me to face for the next 15 years down the road.
This possible-life-ending cancer can be eliminated in our lifetime with the help of the Gardisil HPV Vaccine. I only wish there were better education available for everyone so that the true value of this vaccine could be shown in a better light.
I am so sorry for Ashley's health issues, but selfishly would trade all that I have gone through for the opportunity to have access to the HPV Vaccine when I was a young girl.
As a mother, I pledge that my daughter will receive the HPV Vaccine when she comes of-age to do so; the benefits outweigh the devastation I know Cervical Cancer promises.

This is all about money and fear. BTW, the human papilloma virus (HPV) does NOT cause cervical screenings (see Dr. Christiane Northrup and Dr. Joseph Mercola's comments). Gardasil will become another Vioxx scandal and it will be many more years before the FDA succumbs to pressure to remove this unnecessary and dangerous vaccine from the market. In the meantime, girls are dying and suffering side effects that oftentimes require 24/7 care. Here in CO, $1.5 million was taken out of a preventative screening and treatment program that was successful at detecting cervical cancer. These monies were then allocated to our state 'health' dept. to promote Gardasil. This bill was greased through our state legislature where I gave testimony. A few cervical cancer cases have shown some HPV cells, but this is not true for the majority of cervical cancer cases. Per my sister-in-law who was a pharmaceutical rep, now pharmacist, Merck decided to market the erroneous info that HPV causes cervical cancer in order to set the stage for its entrance into the market w/this vaccine. They wanted to beat GSK (Glaxill-Smith-Kline) in getting an HPV vaccine to market first. Hence the premature rush through clinical trials w/the FDA greenlighting it, conveniently. "Womb to tomb, a customer for life" is the drug cos' motto.

Her mother still is blaming herself for the death of our beautiful Jessie. Is it the FDA and CDC for fast tracking this wonder drug that is killing and crippling our children? Is it the greed by the great pharma. Merck or our Government that is allowing all this to continue? When will this madness end? We the people must and will be the ones that will stop it. We must speak out. Tell others what is happening. E-mail all in your address book. Write your elected officials. Talk to everyone that will listen. I have talked to Ashley's mom and I know what a brave young woman Ashley is. Her mom has had a very hard road to walk and the end is not in sight. Cancer Not Measured
How effective is Gardasil in decreasing the incidence of cervical cancer? 100%? 50%? No one really knows because this question has not yet been answered. As of today, the Gardasil vaccine has never been proven to decrease the actual incidence of cervical cancer. In the studies that led to the vaccine's approval, the incidence of cervical cancer was not measured. Instead CIN (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia) 2/3 and AIS (adenocarcinoma in situ) were used as the surrogate markers for prevention of cervical cancer because according to the vaccine's insert "CIN 2/3 and AIS are the immediate and necessary precursors of squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the cervix, respectively." While this is true it is also true that CIN 2/3 and AIS usually do not lead to cancer. For example, according to published data, CIN2 only leads to invasive carcinoma 5% of the time and CIN3 only leads to invasive carcinoma 12% of the time.
HPV Alone Insufficient to Cause Cancer
In addition, Gardasil is targeted against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) (types 6, 11, 16, and 18). However, during discussions at the FDA it was admitted that HPV alone is insufficient to cause cancer. Dr. Elizabeth Unger of the Centers for Disease Control stated, "So it is believed that infection alone is insufficient to cause cancer, and additional factors are required for neoplasia. There are certainly lots of questions about HPV infection…"2 This point is echoed in the medical text book Cancer: Principles & Practice of Oncology whose editors include Dr. Vincent DeVita, Jr. who was President of the National Cancer Institute and Dr. Steven Rosenberg, Chief of Surgery at the National Cancer Institute. According to this text, "HPV infection is not sufficient for cervical carcinogenesis--(in other words LACK of proof exists that HPV causes cancer).

Please fight against it, get it off the market, don't allow our govt to force it upon these children.

Concerned26, explain to me how YOU would be suffering if this was taken from the market again? Because it is a cancer cure...not true..and cervical cancer has almost been irradicated in the United States, and that most women do not get cervical cancer until they are in their late 40''s but these girls lives are ending in their teens and 20''s. It has not been proven if these girls will even be able to carry children because of this poison. How again are you suffering? Spend a week with one of these girls, and complain to me again about YOUR suffering. Or a week with one of the mothers who have lost a child. Cervical Cancer can be a non-fatal cancer or stopped in its early stages with regular pap tests. Also some girls, virgins, are getting genital warts from the shot. Once this poison is injected into these girls blood streams it is a *** shoot...Do more research!

These story's are horrible for what these healthy young girls, and there family's have gone through and are still going through. You should feel very lucky to have this information. I am also a cervical cancer survivor, one of your best medicines is annual check ups, NOT this drug. This drug does not prevent all cervical cancer, (if any at all). I will NEVER allow my daughters to receive this shot. You should thank these people for educating us, I know that I do. I have been aware of what so many childhood vaccines can do to a family and it can be devestating. In my opinion, there are way to many vaccines out there and we do not know how they all react to one another. The drug company's have way to much power. "needtoknow29" start educating yourself, and to the family's who have been poisoned by this horrible drug, my prayers are with you, you were only doing what we were told was a good thing, to prevent our children from any dangers out there.
