When I broke the story of John Elway's engagement to Paige Green on the Rocky Mountain News Web site Friday and in the paper Saturday, the scoop turned into a real "Paige" turner.

The Internet was buzzing all weekend with several reports that Elway's fiancee is an actress who starred in such obscure movies as The Lotus Eaters, Dark Cinderella and (my favorite) Gory Gory Hallelujah.

Same name, same spelling, wrong girl.

Google the name Paige Green and you'll see what I mean. Up pop several stories about the two-time Super Bowl champ's beautiful betrothed, but only some of them are true. Both Green gals are actresses and former professional cheerleaders, but that's where the similarity ends.

The other Green is a 30-something blonde, who (if Internet reports can be trusted) is engaged to Ninth District King County (Wash.) Councilman Reagan Dunn. The story includes a photo of Elway's Green.

Other Web entries carried our story about the engagement, but included a pic of the blond film actress. In the interest of de-tangling the stories and backgrounds of the two women with the same name, I called each of their agents. Neither one was aware of the Internet mix-up.

"Our Paige Green would love to have more credits, but not those credits," said Ted Maier of Maier Management in L.A., who represents the 41-year-old Mrs. Elway-to-be, about the sketchy film credits of the other Green.

Maier said his client does mostly infomercial work as a hostess. "She's done a ton of fitness infomercials and exercise commercials," he said.

Her profile on the Maier Management Web site also describes her as brown-eyed and brown-haired at 5-foot-7. Her interests include equestrian, golf, roller skating, roller blading, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball, hip-hop dancing and singing.

Imdb.com has pictures of the other 5-foot-9, blond-haired, blue-eyed 30-something Green with a lengthy film, TV, theater and music resume.

"I heard John Elway was marrying a former cheerleader, that's all I know," said Peter Scott of Torque Entertainment, the younger Green's agent. When I told him about the Internet identity confusion he said, "I wish you the best of luck with all the shenanigans, but it's really not my world."

DINING SPOTS DIVE: Longtime Denver eatery owner Jim Sullivan has thrown in the restaurant towel. On Monday, he officially shuttered nine75 at 975 Lincoln St. and Ocean, 201 Columbine St. in Cherry Creek North.

"I decided to exit the restaurant business because it's way too volatile," he told me after meeting with his Ocean staff on Monday. Sullivan estimated that between the two eateries, 100 employees are out of work.

"I feel badly for the employees, vendors, everybody," he said. "I feel most badly for me because I spent a significant amount of money building restaurants." When his restaurant Mao failed to find legs, Sullivan revamped the space and changed it to Ocean more than two years ago. Earlier this year, Sullivan, who started in the restaurant biz as a Black-Eyed Pea franchisee, closed nine75's second location in Westminster.

He said the remaining two restaurants were victims of these tough economic times. "People just don't have the money they used to," said Sullivan, who added that he will sell or liquidate the businesses. "In a recession, the first thing to go are luxury items, and fine dining is a luxury item."

As for you gift-card holders, Sullivan said he's trying to make arrangements to have them honored at another restaurant. Stay tuned for deets.

EAVESDROPPING on a group of men at the Funky Buddah nightclub: "I don't know about all that, but at least I know I am not bi-curious."

FYI - when you apply the word "blonde" to a female it ends in an "e". "Blond" is the masculine spelling. I don't know why, but as a lifelong "blonde" with a degree in journalism from MSCD (for what that is worth) I am aware of the difference in gender spelling for this word.

Funny thing, when you misspell Penny Parker as Tea Leoni and then Google Tea Leoni, you gets lots of hits on Tea Leoni and nothing on Penny Parker. Why doesn't this ever make the news? Another mysterious "Internet mixup?"
