Obama campaign volunteers discuss details on Farrand Field Wednesday at the University of Colorado in Boulder as preparation is done for an appearance by Michelle Obama.
Michelle Obama spoke today at the University of Colorado. The Rocky's Julie Poppen and Sara Burnett covered the rally live.
12:21 p.m.
Michelle Obama says the campaign needs the crowd’s work and prayers.
“We can change our future,” she says. “We can perhaps change the world.”
With that, she concluded her speech and the crowd chanted "Yes, we can!"
12:19 p.m.
Michelle Obama says young people, students, can change the outcome of this election.
She says there is a goal to register 4,100 students on CU’s campus, and “we’re halfway there.”
“Let’s hit that goal,” she said, noting there are people in the crowd to help students register.
She also asks them to find five other “trifling people in your life” – a dorm mate, sorority sister, parent – who is cynical or intimidated by politics.
“What we have to do is tell them, this time it’s different,” Obama says, encouraging them to get those people to register to vote too.
12:15 p.m.
Oct. 6 is the deadline to register to vote, and Obama urges everyone to register and get their friends to register.
“What happens here in the state can set the tone for the rest of the election,” Obama says. “This is a swing state, and we want some swinging to go on right here.”
Obama says about 170,000 young people in Colorado who are eligible to vote are not registered.
12:14 p.m.
“Barack Obama’s leadership is the kind of leadership we need right now,” Michelle Obama says. “Not in four years, or in eight years.”
Let’s assume it’s not going to be easy to elect him, she said, because it was never going to be easy.
“We’re running out of time,” she says.
From the crowd some guy yells, “We need to kick butt.”
Obama responds that they need to get that guy up on stage.
12:11 p.m.
Obama says only one candidate – her husband -- is talking about a long-term energy plan, believes every child in this nation “deserves an outstanding education,” and is talking about withdrawing troops from Iraq responsibly.
12:09 p.m.
Michelle Obama says most Americans want Washington to stop talking about family values and start creating policies that value families.
“That’s just the kind of president you’ll have in the White House” if voters elect Barack Obama, she says.
“There are some clear choices in this election, and for me the choices are clear,” Michelle Obama says.
12:07 p.m.
“Don’t we want a president who understands what it’s like to carry debt?” Michelle Obama asks.
“Let me tell you, Barack gets it. He gets it,” she said.
Barack Obama walked away from a high-paying job after college to be a community organizer in Chicago, working in areas where steel plants closed. She says those areas saw a lot of the same problems as Americans are in today’s failing economy.
“Let me tell you something, CU, Barack Obama gets it. What Barack understands is that people in America aren’t asking for much … they just want to know that if they get up and work hard every day, they’ll be able to earn enough to take care of their kids.”
12:04 p.m.
Obama says Sen. Barack Obama’s mother died of ovarian cancer at age 53, and he had to deal with insurance companies rejecting her because they said cancer was a pre-existing condition.
Michelle Obama says America needs someone with that kind of life experience in the White House.
She also says she and Barack Obama came out of college with a lot of student debt. They just paid off their student loans a few years ago, and that was because her husband wrote two best-selling books, she said.
12:01 p.m.
Obama is talking about her working-class background and her father, who suffered from multiple sclerosis.
“With all that he had to deal with, he didn’t complain once,” she said. “When things got hard, he worked a little harder.”
She says her parents’ sacrifices helped send her and her brother to college.
11:58 a.m.
“We’re here because of all of you,” Obama tells the crowd.
She says it’s been exciting to watch the enthusiasm of supporters across the country, and that she’s so proud of her husband.
“I know in my soul that he will be an extraordinary president,” she says.
11:56 a.m.
Obama says the campaign has seen great excitement from young people. And “not-so-young people.”
“Let’s hear it for the not-so-young people,” she said, bringing a cheer from the crowd.
11:54 a.m.
Michelle Obama was greeted by loud cheers and applause.
She thanked her “good friend” Jeannie Ritter, Colorado’s first lady. She said Coloradans were great hosts for the Democratic National Convention in August.
“We had a good time,” she said.
11:52 a.m.
Eric Heiser, a 29-year-old studying engineering and physics, said he skipped his politics of movement course and biochemistry to come to Michelle Obama’s speech.
“It’s not very often that the potential first lady shows up on campus,” he said.
Heiser said he hopes to “gain more insight into the political process about how politicians and their family interact with the public.”
Obama coming to Boulder is like preaching to the choir, Heiser said, but he added he hopes that gives her more opportunity to speak about some specific issues.
Heiser said his personal interest is renewable energy.
Heiser was with a friend Lindsay Focht, 18., who goes to school in California but is home in Boulder recovering from a back injury.
Focht showed up with a full back brace with a sign on it reading, “I wouldn’t miss this even with a broken back.”
11:47 a.m.
Former Broncos star Rod Smith told the crowd at Farrand Field that he grew up in a big family.
They were not politically aware, he said, but more concerned about “putting food on the table.”
Times have changed, Smith said, for him and America.
“We do need change, and not just a slogan of change,” he said. “That’s why being here today is very important.”
Smith said he didn’t always vote when he could have, and he found himself complaining about what was happening in Washington.
“I suffered enough by not voting, and you know what I did the whole time? Complained about it,” he said. “Don’t complain if you don’t vote.”
11:40 a.m.
The rally leading up to Michelle Obama’s speech is underway.
Joe Megus, a law student running for the CU Board of Regents, told the crowd, “This is the most important election in our lifetime. There are people who question whether we will show up. I know you will. The stakes of staying home are too high. Let’s change the world together.”
Congressional candidate Jared Polis said the youth vote “will make the difference in this election. It certainly did for me in the Democratic primary.”
Polis also said everyone in the crowd needs to take personal responsibility to get all of their friends and family members to vote.
All of those who were in line are now on the fileld, which is only about a quarter filled.
10:53 a.m.
The lines are flowing relatively quickly into Farrand Field, which can hold about 7,000 people. Attendees are going through minimal security checks, with no metal detectors. Officials are mostly just visually scanning people.
One of those who just entered was Christina Donahue, 19, an English major, who said her professor canceled class so students could attend the rally.
"It's important to be out and politically active and vote," Donahue said. "This will be an important part of history."
Since she is 19, this will be the first time she can vote.
"A lot of people are really interested," Donahue said. "They want to be part of it and contribute."
She, along with the thousands of others expected to attend, are filling out information cards for the Obama campaign.
A local band, Meniskus, is performing as the crowd pours. in.
There's a big handpainted "GoBama: Barack and Roll" sign next to the field. Udall and Polis campaign signs are also sprouting up.
10:17 a.m.
Duke Austin, a 33-year-old graduate student and instructor in CU’s Sociology Department, was out near the lines to get in with a sign that said, “No bailout for the rich” on one side and “Don’t surge Afghanistan” on the other.
Austin describes himself as a “critical Obama supporter.”
“I think the movement surrounding Obama is more progressive than Obama himself. If the movement wants to influence change in Obama, it has to do it before the election,” he said.
Austin was among the organizers of protests during the Democratic National Convention and is part of the group Students for Peace and Justice.
He said the line between government and big business is increasing non-existent.
Following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, there was credible evidence that some of terrorists were in Afghanistan, Austin said, and the U.S. had a morally defensible position to be in that country.
However, Austin said that is no longer the case.
Obama is talking tough about Afghanistan to show, “he is not a pacifist,” Austin said.
10:04 a.m.
Perhaps they're sleeping in or sitting in class, because the crowd so far is distinctly lacking in CU students -- the Obama campaign's target audience.
Gail Heinzman, who is working for New Era Colorado registering people in line to vote, said more students will likely show up after morning classes. Heinzman said students and other young voters are under-represented in the electoral process. She's hoping to get them registered to vote and signed up to work as election judges, where students' savvy with technology could come in handy.
"They have the potential to have a distinct impact on the election in a swing state," Heinzman said. She is encouraging out-of-state students to register to vote in Colorado rather than vote absentee in their home states.
Kim Saporito, also from New Era Colorado, taught at CU and said it was difficult for her students to vote. Because they move often - and must be registered at a current address - she saw students turned away at their polling place.
"They want to (vote)," Saporito said. "They make it so easy to register, but for students it's a little harder. You have to know how to fill out the form right."
The women said New Era Colorado has registered more than 9,000 people to vote.
"Once people get involved in politics, they tend to stay involved in politics," Heinzman said.
9:57 a.m.
Two lines have formed at Farrand Field, one at the northeast corner and the other on the southwest corner. The lines snake through the scenic campus, with several hundred people in each line. Most people in line appear to be community members, rather than students.
9:48 a.m.
Robert Mosley, a 69-year-old who is retired from the U.S. Postal Service, drove from Commerce City to see Michelle Obama.
"I feel that she can spread more knowledge about what Obama's plans are for the future," said Mosley, who was among the first 30 or so people in line.
Specifically, Mosley wants to hear more about the economy, the war in Iraq, women's issues "and the plight of the middle-income people."
9:25 a.m.
Several hundred people already are lined up around Farrand Field at the University of Colorado, where Michelle Obama will urge a crowd later today to register to vote in the Nov. 4 election and to cast ballots for her husband, Sen. Barack Obama.
Gates don't open until 10 a.m., and Michelle Obama isn't expected to speak until closer to noon. But Longmont residents Song Bennett and her partner, David Stewart, arrived at 7:30 a.m. to be first in line.
The couple both had the day off from work, and said they wouldn't miss the opportunity to hear Michelle Obama speak.
"We're firm Obama supporters and I love Michelle," said Bennett, a 43-year-old pre-med student at the University of Colorado at Denver. "Anytime I can hear her speak, it's great."
9:15 a.m.
Among the first in line for Michelle Obama's speech was 13-year-old Hannalee Chatham, a seventh-grader at Erie Middle School, whose mom allowed her to skip school for today's event.
"It all comes down to Barack Obama wanting to help our country, our economy, our society," Hannalee said.
She said she expected Michelle Obama to back up her husband's message.
Hannalee said her mom and stepdad are not all that politically active but said she is obsessed with politics.
She said she has read most of "The Audacity of Hope," a book by the Democratic presidential nominee, but said "it was a slow book."
Under her arm she was clutching a book for school, a biography of Frederick Douglass.
Accompanying Hannalee was a family friend, Brittany Pettersen, who said, "It's amazing to find someone who's so young who cares."
EARLIER STORY
Sen. John McCain will try to win over women and undecided voters with two town hall meetings in Colorado this week, while Michelle Obama today will urge college students - a key group for her husband, Sen. Barack Obama - to register to vote.
McCain will hold a "women's town hall" Thursday at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in downtown Denver and a town hall meeting Friday at Colorado State University in Pueblo.
The Arizona Republican will take questions from the crowd at both events. It's a format the campaign believes McCain does well in and one that differentiates him from Obama, whose recent appearances here have been rallies or speeches with no audience participation.
The idea is to have "a true discourse and conversation with undecided voters," said McCain spokesman Tom Kise.
While the meetings are open to the public - and men may attend the Denver event - the campaign is extending special invitations to voters identified from phone banks as undecided.
It's also hoping the Denver meeting will attract women voters who supported Sen. Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary, or those upset that Obama didn't pick Clinton as his running mate.
Pueblo, which Obama visited last month, is fertile ground for both campaigns.
While Democrats made up about 44 percent of registered voters in Pueblo County as of August, about 30 percent were unaffiliated, and 24 percent registered as Republican.
Michelle Obama's noon rally today at the University of Colorado in Boulder, meanwhile, is part of a strategy to increase turnout among voters age 24 and younger.
"It's very important for us to make sure that these young people are registered to vote," said Matt Chandler, a spokesman for Obama.
In 2004, John Kerry lost Colorado to President Bush by roughly 100,000 votes.
Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said in August that Obama could close that gap by one-third by increasing turnout and support among 18- to 24-year-olds and blacks by 5 percent.

Lou Dobbs
CNN Transcripts
September 30, 2008
LOU DOBBS, HOST: Tonight, a stunning setback for the Bush administration and the Democratic congressional leadership and an outright victory for the American people, the House of Representatives refusing to support that $700 billion Wall Street bailout. We'll have complete coverage and we'll be reporting to you on today's huge sell- off on Wall Street.
And tonight, is anyone in Washington looking after the interests of our working men and women and their families, our middle class? We'll have a special report on the refuse of political and financial elites to help our working men and women.
...............DOBBS: Well Jessica, help me out here. Maybe I'm a little confused on very, very complicated mathematics. But it seems to me that with the majority in the House of Representatives, it's a bit disingenuous for Barney Frank or Nancy Pelosi or Steny Hoyer to be blaming Republicans. All they had to do was assemble their majority and push this through. Why is the national media letting them play these silly games? In point of fact, this should be squarely resting on the majority in Congress and that's a Democratic majority.
..........DOBBS: Jessica, if I may, that seems to be an artifice, a convenient one for the Democratic leadership, but the reality is more than 60 Democrats voted against the bailout, so it seems rather them talking nicely to 12 Republicans, Barney Frank might consider talking nice to some 60-some odd Democrats.
YELLIN: Well you hit the nail on the head, Lou, and one of the proposals or the ideas I've heard from Democrats is that if the Republicans don't want to come along, they will -- the Democrats will rewrite this bill as a bill that's very pleasing to the Democrats that includes bankruptcy protections and all sorts of consumer protections to help families and Democratic voters which Republicans won't like at all, but will get all of those Democrats signed on and they might try to shove it down the Republicans' throat.
DOBBS: Well I've got a forecast to make and I'll venture one of my forecasts if I may, Jessica. After all of these Congress men and women get back from their home districts, I'll guarantee you the Democrats won't be passing any such legislation with any such elements in it. Thank you very much, Jessica Yellin.
............About 12 percent of the two million mortgages now under foreclosure were written for homeowners with bad credit or with little or no money down. Two years ago, sub prime borrowers accounted for 20 percent of home loans, now nine percent of the nation's 75 million homeowners are either behind on their mortgage payments or in foreclosure.

So did I. I wrote lots of papers in college, in that stupid humanities class they made me take freshman year. I wrote about women's rights, about Native American rights, I wrote about the supposed lifestyle of Australopithecus. I wrote about the Civil War, and the Industrial Revolution.
Then I got my engineering degree and left that paper writing behind. I did it because I had to take a class, had to do the coursework, might have learned something along the way - but writing one paper doens't define who I am.
So you don't want to put someone in the White House that you PRESUME doens't like white people (and her husband is half white, btw) but you're OK with people in the white house who don't like other ethnic groups? That's nice.

Now that's really classy! And so intellectual too. You just want to play your word association games so you can regurgitate the same old emotional rants. Let's give it a whirl, shall we? Here's some meat to set off the pack.
Bush, Cheney, Haliburton, Palin, McCain. How's that? That should keep you busy for awhile. Now, how about trying some from your camp for a change? Pelosi, Frank, Rangel, Reid, Dodds, Byrd, Schumer, Biden. Those are some of the fine "leadership" from your party who are going to help Obama "change" the way Washington works. Are you people really that naive? I believe you probably are. Check out the average age of the 16 Senate Democrats who head up the committees. It's 72, same as McCain. Now that's bound to produce "change".
I think you don't understand that most Conservatives would vote for Bush AGAIN if he were the only alternative to Barack Obama. Somehow you misinterpret low approval ratings to mean everybody hates the man, like you do. Not true! He sold out us Conservatives, but that doesn't mean we would vote for socialism. So, go ahead and slam McCain all you want. I wouldn't have picked him, and I'm sorry he's the candidate produced by the primary system. But, the worst semi-Conservative candidate out there is better than the Liberal Socialist you people came up with. Check back on November 5th, and you'll get a reality check.
Bye now. You can just throw your little tantrums for the rest of the day. I choose not to participate, because you folks can't behave in a civil or rational manner. I'll check in on you another time.

"The Washington Times is reporting that the California Democrat's husband, Paul F. Pelosi, owns Financial Leasing Services Inc., which has received $99,000 in rent, utilities and accounting fees from the speaker's "PAC to the Future" over the PAC's nine-year history.
Last year, Pelosi supported a bill that would have banned members of Congress from putting spouses on their campaign staffs. The bill banned not only direct payments by congressional campaign committees and PACs to spouses for services including consulting and furndraising, but also "indirect compensation," such as payments to companies that employ spouses.
The bill passed the House in a voice vote but died in a Senate committee.
Last week, Pelosi's office defended the payments, saying they were legal because she is compensating her husband at fair market value for the work his firm has performed for the PAC.
Ethical watchdogs called Pelosi's arrangement "problematic."

Questions are being raised about the objectivity of Thursday's vice presidential debate moderator after news surfaced that she is releasing a new book promoting Barack Obama and other black politicians who have benefited from the civil rights struggle.
Gwen Ifill, of PBS' "The NewsHour," is expected to remain as moderator, however.
"The book has been a known factor for months, so I'm not sure what the big deal is," said NewsHour spokeswoman Anne Bell.
She told FOXNews.com that there were no concerns about Ifill's neutrality, and that the debate Thursday between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden would go forward as planned. Ifill also moderated the 2004 vice presidential debate.
"We were pleased that the (debate) commission once again turned to Gwen to moderate the debate," Bell said. "They've known and trusted her as a moderator and that's wonderful."
Ifill's book, "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama," is due to be released about the same time the next president takes the oath of office.
In her book, Ifill contends that the black political structure of the civil rights movement has cleared the way for post-racial politicians to ascend to new heights.
Now some are wondering whether Ifill can be fair and balanced, and whether she should be the moderator of Thursday's 9 p.m. ET debate.
"Clearly her books aren't going to do as well unless Obama wins, so it looks like she has some investment, literally, in one candidate or the other. And she's supposed to be sitting there as a neutral arbiter during the debate," said NPR's Juan Williams, a FOX News contributor. "I think the world of Gwen Ifill but I know there's a perception problem."
Web site WorldNetDaily reported on the Ifill book Tuesday night.
FOX News political analyst Michelle Malkin argued in a post on National Review that Ifill is "so far in the tank for the Democratic presidential candidate, her oxygen delivery line is running."

"My dictionary defines “moderator” as “the nonpartisan presiding officer of a town meeting.” On Thursday, PBS anchor Gwen Ifill will serve as moderator for the first and only vice presidential debate. The stakes are high. The Commission on Presidential Debates, with the assent of the two campaigns, decided not to impose any guidelines on her duties or questions.
But there is nothing “moderate” about where Ifill stands on Barack Obama. She’s so far in the tank for the Democrat presidential candidate, her oxygen delivery line is running out."
In an imaginary world where liberal journalists are held to the same standards as everyone else, Ifill would be required to make a full disclosure at the start of the debate. She would be required to turn to the cameras and tell the national audience that she has a book coming out on January 20, 2009 – a date that just happens to coincide with the inauguration of the next president of the United States.

I have no idea who picked this nubian princess to run this debate, but I'm sure if the McCain camp had real concerns, they could have vetted this issue a long time ago. Short of calling Palin a "cracker" not sure there is much damage she can do during the debate. No one ever really answers the question put to them anyway.

Regarding your dream of free health care, you need to actually spend some time living in some socialist country for a while to see how much you pay for consumables and in taxes to provide for your "free" health care. I also personally have friends from Canada who have moved here to the US, and others that have brought their family here, in order to receive health care that was not provided to them in Canada.
You see, when the government controls your life, it also acts as the gatekeeper, deciding how costs and services will be allocated. In Canada, there is a black market in some regions where you pay and can be bumped up on the list. In other cases, doctors simply choose not to treat elderly patients, as they are over-burdened with the number of patients already.
Of course, if you're willing to trade freedom for financial security, Obama is your guy. I'll take my chances and fend for myself. You might want to consider reading Hayek's "Road to Serfdom" to see how Leftist economics and politics ultimately plays out. It probably won't change your thinking, but al least you will be informed.

Hate to break the news but even if Jesus was our next president he couldn't clean up this financial nightmare! This bailout is a joke and will only make it worse 10 years down the road and it seems like this version or the next (if this don't work they will keep going) will get passed any moment.
I'm not sold on either guy but a good point is experience. McCain has a lot and Obama has a little, but a person with over 20 yrs in should be able to crush-and I mean absolutely crush somebody like Obama in a debate and he didn't. He should have picked him apart on every subject and he couldn't (I don't expect much from someone with no experience but I expect a lot from someone with decades worth....I bet your job thinks the same thing?), I think that speaks volumes for our current economic crisis and the "leaders" who allowed it and now are attempting to resolve the same issues they helped create. Bush, Clinton, Bush made a mess and now the citizens will use the bailout broom to clean it up until the next time. I may not be able to see Russia from here but I sure can see the rocks at the bottom pretty clearly right now.
