The third-year player spent the 2007 season with the Broncos but was cut on Aug. 30. He takes the roster spot of wide receiver Clifford Russell, whom the Broncos placed on their reserve/injured list. Russell suffered a sprained neck in the fourth quarter of Denver’s game at Kansas City on Sunday.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounds Martinez ) played 12 games, making one start, in 2007. He made 14 receptions for 175 yards (a 12.5-yard average) and returned 14 punts for 157 yards (11.2-yard average) with one touchdown and 15 kickoff returns for 330 yards (22.0-yard average).

His 80-yard punt return for a touchdown in Denver’s Monday Night Football win against Tennessee on Nov. 19 was the team's first punt return score in four seasons and earned him AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

Well, there went some $$ on Russell. I'm glad he's ok, but I hate seeing all that wasted millions. Was there any clause to the contract about what he will be paid if he gets injured? Martinez was a good WR. Hopefully, we can utilize him in the offense as well as ST.

HUH??? They sign another offensive player when the problem with this team lies on the defensive side of the ball? Someone check the substance in Shannys cigar please!

Russell's cap number is $616,480, so I don't know where Dave's "wasted millions" comment came from. This is a bubble player, and he's doing what bubble players do. The IR placement for Russell (and for Alridge too) probably happened for some of the reasons mentioned above by other posters, and is likely less an indication of actual injury and more an indication of trying to keep the player around while still freeing up a spot on the 53-man roster.

To RDenver -- The minimum number of wide receivers necessary for a team roster is 4, we have Marshall, Royal, Stokley, and then Russell ... until he was placed on the IR, Shanny is not signing an offensive player to increase his offense, he is doing it to keep his 53 man roster full. But on a serious note, I was at the game on Sunday and am very glad to hear Russell is recovering well, it looked very serious and even the Chief fans were very concerned. Good luck in your recovery hope to see you soon ... and awesome cartwheel on that kick return!!

DeimosJB, yeah, my bad. I was thinking of the wide receiver we shipped off to Seattle. Brain freeze, for a moment.
