Former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway is shown with Paige Green during ABC's "Gillette's Young Guns Celebrity Race - Fast Cars & Superstars" last year.

Is love lovelier the second time around?

Broncos Hall-of-Famer John Elway is betting on it.

He asked steady girlfriend Paige Green, a former Raiderette, to marry him while the cute couple was vacationing in Italy last week.

“I’m very lucky to find Paige,” Elway told me. “She’s a great gal. I’m looking forward to a long life together.”

The quarterback and the cheerleader met three years ago during a celebrity golf tournament in Los Angeles, where Green, an actress, called home. But it wasn’t until seven months later when Elway spotted the lovely lady on an infomercial that he thought to contact her.

A year ago, she moved to Denver where the two have made their nest in Elway’s Cherry Hills Village home. Elway’s first marriage to Janet Elway ended after 18 years and four children.

Craig Andrisen, one of Elway’s best buds, said he knew the two would get engaged eventually, he just didn’t know when.

“I’m ecstatic for the both of them,” said Andrisen who recently married for the second time to Christy Luth. “At my wedding, he sat in the back row. Now he’s moving up to the front.”

Elway, 48, and Green, 41, haven’t set their wedding date yet. For the Italy proposal, the former quarterback came prepared with diamond ring in tow. Did he make the surprise proposal romantic?

“I tried to, yeah,” he said. “I think she said, ‘Yes,’ the third time I asked her.”

A cheerleader yet. And "She's a great gal."
So was his wife, whom I grew to admire greatly. I'm sure his daughters are great gals too and would have been enhanced by a different experience in their home.
Yes, she looks like a "great gal" like all the others, so please -- John -- treat her right. Tears will not improve that face, and neither will worry, anxiety or frustration. Keep the smile on it this time, as some of us in your audience are aware how it faded from the countenance of the last "great gal" (who may have been a few "great gals" behind at the time, anyway).

I think if he's going to marry someone formally associated with that team from Oakland (I won't say the word), then she should be 21 & busty & some of those other things that are good...I guess. I suppose since John graduated from Stanford with something like a 3.8 GPA, she'd probably have to be able to put 2 & 2 together on a high level as well. John, aren't there any Broncos cheerleaders you could have romanced? $100 says she's now a Broncos fan.

She's pretty if you like that type - way too much make-up, big hair that probably hasn't seen it's original color since she was a teen ager and a wardrobe straight from "Trophy Wives R Us". By looks only she seemed pretty much the antithesis of Janet.

But it's good he found somebody. Patting his own back probably was taking a toll on his shoulder.

I know it may have never occured to some of you that maybe some women have their OWN money (and she has ALOT!), and its an insult to this woman who has achieved on her own..not through someone else... that you would still attempt to tear her down and cast her in a negative light. women are damned if they do, and damned if they dont. Divorce is painful for all involved and cost society more than most realize (OK requires PREP training, developed here in Colorado, before a divorce can be finalized). SO many marriages could be saved. The kids will benefit from seeing the conflict resolution skills and models of commitment even when it gets tough (kids of divorced parent are more likely to divorce). Don't have kids if you don't plan to really work at "till death do us part". As a school teacher I have had to pay for other peoples mistakes that their kids act out in the classroom. Divorce affects society - thus society should have a right to be involved in preventing it. We are celebrating 30 years together and it took work and counseling and swallowing ego and commitment and learning to love better and be less selfcentered.
