Regional scene: Crush hires MacKeown to coordinate offense

The Arena Football League's Colorado Crush hired Chris MacKeown as its new offensive coordinator Wednesday.

MacKeown most recently was coach of the Amarillo Dusters of the af2. In one season in Amarillo, MacKeown led the Dusters to their best record in team history and their first appearance in the National Conference championship.

"The number of experienced offensive coaches in the arena game is somewhat limited, and we think we found ourselves a very capable coach in Chris MacKeown," Crush co-owner John Elway said.

SHERLOCK LEADS DU Junior Stephanie Sherlock shot a final round 4-under-par 68 to claim her sixth career tournament title, and the eighth-ranked University of Denver women's golf team shot the third-best score in school history with an 8-under 280 to win its Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate for the fifth straight season at Highlands Ranch Golf Club.

DU carded the lowest score in all three rounds to finish with a 54-hole team score of 853 (11 under), winning by by 27 shots.

Texas Christian (880) finished second, San Jose State (888) was third, UC Irvine (894) was fourth and Arkansas-Little Rock (908) was fifth.

Senior Dawn Shockley finished alone in fifth place with a 3-under 213.

FORWARD COMMITS TO CU Keegan Hornbuckle, a 6-foot-5 forward from North Hollywood,

Calif., who was being recruited by Arizona, Arizona State and Santa Clara, has committed to Colorado's men's basketball team.

Rated a three-star recruit by Scout.com, Hornbuckle is CU's first known commitment for the 2008-09 signing class.

DU RALLIES The DU volleyball team (11-2) rallied from a two- set deficit to beat Northern Colorado (7-3) on Tuesday night at Hamilton Gymnasium.

BEARDSLEY HONORED DU freshman midfielder Bria Beardsley earned her first Sun Belt Conference player of the week honor in women's soccer after scoring both winning goals in two wins at the Colorado Soccer Classic.

PAYNE TOPS IN RMAC Shannon Payne of CU-Colorado Springs was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's cross country runner of the week. Colorado Mines sophomore Ben Zywicki earned the men's honor.

* Adams State's men's and women's squads maintained their No. 1 rankings atop the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II rankings.

SIMPSON TOURNAMENT SET CU will stage the first Mark Simpson Colorado Golf Day on Oct. 17 at Vista Ridge Golf Club in Erie.
