Palin fires up state races
Alaska governor's influence extends to legislative races

Holly Hansen, Republican candidate in House District 31, canvasses along East 104th Avenue in Thornton on Friday. The 35-year-old working mother of two making her first run for office believes Sarah Palin's candidacy "will energize young suburban moms to get out and vote."
Sarah Palin's presence on the Republican ticket is causing a ripple effect that's being felt even on the streets of Thornton.
That is where two women - Democratic Rep. Judy Solano and Republican challenger Holly Hansen - are knocking on doors to drum up support for their legislative candidacies. They are encountering working mothers who see someone they can relate to on the GOP ticket, as well as women who are offended at what they consider John McCain's attempts to pander to them.
The House District 31 race is an example of how candidates are coming to grips with the idea that the Alaska governor has energized voters who might not otherwise have much interest in the election.
Both political parties believe that energy will trickle down to legislative races spurring women voters to get behind female candidates who remind them of Palin - or stand in contrast to her.
Hansen, a 35-year-old working mother of two making her first run for office, has gone to homes where unaffiliated female residents said they have never voted Republican but are open to considering GOP candidates.
"Outside the political spectrum, people like me are looking for role models. I think her candidacy will energize young suburban moms to get out and vote and support local candidates," Hansen said. "I think Sarah Palin kind of gives permission to some of those disenfranchised women who have felt that the party was out of touch to come back and look at the party again."
GOP officials identified as many as eight legislative races for suburban seats that are held or targeted by Democrats in which Republican women candidates could benefit from the so-called Palin effect.
Return to 'heart issues'
It is those suburban female voters, often known collectively as the soccer moms, who have played a large role in the Colorado GOP's defeats. Feeling that Republicans have concentrated too much on social issues rather than matters important to their lives, they have voted in larger numbers for Democrats since 2004 and have turned former GOP safe areas from red to blue.
Palin's appeal is that she can relate to those women on "heart issues" - education, health care, public safety - that Republicans too often haven't discussed, said Katie Witt, the GOP challenger in Longmont-centered Senate District 17. Once those women open the door to voting for the GOP at the top of the ticket, they are willing to look at other races, too, Witt said.
Legislative Republicans have been known for their male-dominated caucus in recent years. Just five of the 40 Republicans in the House and Senate are women.
The party worked to find quality female candidates this year, Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dick Wadhams said.
Pushing the momentum
The reaction to Palin has been swift and apparent. GOP headquarters distributed 15,000 McCain/Palin signs in the 10 days after she joined the ticket.
State Rep. Amy Stephens, R-Monument, said she met both independent and Democratic women - as well as women who'd never before cared about politics - at a Colorado Springs rally where Palin appeared.
Pushing that momentum down to the legislative level will involve one-on-one contact between female candidates and the suddenly interested and open voters, said Witt, a 36-year-old soccer mom.
"It just gives normal people a role model in government," Witt said. "Sarah Palin, I think, of all the candidates on the top of all the tickets, she is the one that is easiest to relate to."
But some Democrats say they also have seen an energizing of their base since Palin came onto the national scene.
Rep. Anne McGihon, D-Denver, said as soon as Palin joined the GOP ticket, she began hearing from a new swath of women wanting to volunteer.
These women, both traditional Democrats and moderates, felt McCain chose a running mate based on gender rather than preparedness for office, she said.
Some Democrats have even taken to comparing their opponents to Palin. Sen. Brandon Shaffer, whom Witt is challenging, wrote in a campaign e-mail that Witt, like Palin, is out of step with most voters on important social and educational issues.
"What people are concerned about is the economy and making sure their job is secure. And at the end of the day it doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman, it's whether you can handle the issues," the Longmont Democrat said.
McGihon conceded that many Democrats worried initially about Palin's popularity, but said that talk has faded as the economy falters and news of controversies surrounding the governor come out.
Colorado College political science professor Bob Loevy said the presidential race is likely to have coattails down to the legislative races only if McCain and Palin sweep the state by a large margin.
John Straayer, a political science professor at Colorado State University, said the conservative Palin will get some women to take a look at the GOP but will alienate some moderates, too. She could swing 100 or so votes in a race, but not the thousands the Republicans need to take back a House where Democrats hold a 15-vote advantage, he said.
"It's not inconsequential," Straayer said in describing Palin's impact on local races. "Could it make a difference in a tight race? Yes. Is it going to lead to a capture of the requisite eight seats? I would bet heavily against it."

AKdan writes:
The October 2008 issue of Field and Stream is highly recommended for anyone who cherishes their 2nd Amendment rights.
Especially important is page 85 of the article - where Barack Obama is asked about his quote on people 'clinging' to guns, and he says that he should have said 'relied on' instead of 'clinging to.'
'Why' - Field and Stream asks?
Obama replies, 'Because people have given up on the government on fixing their economic problems, so they have moved on to something else, guns being that something else.'
(And Obama clearly doesn't want those 'bitter' people to use their guns to say... oppose 'Tryanny' like that of oppressive taxes, right?)
Obama is then asked: 'Do you agree with the Supreme Court's decision' concerning the second amendment.
His answer: 'What I think it has done is provided some clarity that, in fact, the Second Amendment is an individual right and that law-abiding gun owners can't be prevented from going out and hunting, protecting their family on their own.'
Gee Barack Obama, I seem to remember that Bill Clinton had the same point that the Second Amendment gave us the alleged right to hunt ducks - when the 2nd Amendment has NOTHING TO DO WITH HUNTING!
Barack Obama then goes on in the interview to say that the AK-47 is not a hunting arm and should be banned, permanently, from 'civilian hands.' (like he'll ban murder and drug-dealing with his 'magic wand'..)
Obama also answers 'YES' to an assault weapons ban.
They ask McCain the same questions.
McCain's is a very short 'NO' to an assault weapons ban and McCain states that he finds high cap magazine bans purely academic and a waste of time.
Is there any question of who to vote for now?
So, the 'Communist piece of trash', Barack Hussein Obama not only wants to screw up the economy even worse with higher taxes on the very people who create jobs (business owners earning over $250K), but now he says civilians are to be 'permanently' barred from owning AK-47's (which would also include AR-15's and other military style semi-auto rifles)!
What a plan - take away Whitey's 'Assault Weapons' - so Obama and his hoodlums can 'redistribute the wealth' (of whitey) to Obama's oppressed 'tribal brothers' - who can get fully-automatic AK-47's from the same drug cartels who supply these hoodlums with the drugs they turn around and sell to the people who are really the #1 cause of gun crime - Democrats who fund gun violence with their purchase of illegal drugs!!!
Sounds like Obama wants the same of what happened when Rhodesia degraded into the plundering and collapse that Zimbabwe saw when 'whitey's' wealth was 'redistributed' by blacks?
Does this mean another CIVIL WAR is imminent - as CNN, Time and the AP have already printed articles that allege if Obama loses the election - then it has to be because of race - which is literally giving militant Blacks the 'GREEN LIGHT' to engage in RIOTS and a RACE WAR!

Even if they wanted to ban the AK's, it's too late. Many citizens have them. Like closing the gate after the horse gets out. They cannot track all weapons, private sales don't have paperwork. Don't read anything into these statements that aren't there, they know they are fighting a losing battle when it comes to our 2ND amendment rights, just a political topic.

Meanwhile, suspicion hardened that Al Qaeda or the Taliban were behind Saturday's blast at the Marriott hotel in Islamabad. Some 270 people were wounded, while the dead included the Czech ambassador and two U.S. Department of Defense employees.
......Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said the attack was an attempt to "destabilize democracy" in Pakistan, which this year emerged from nine years of military rule."

It's really quite simple when you boil it down. It will begin with voluntary surrender of firearms (for some $$). Then as time progresses a few extreme (set-up) gun crimes will occur and everybody will feel proned to hopping on the bandwagon to BAN ALL GUNS.
It's happened ALL OVER THE WORLD.
As far as I'm concerned they can "ban guns". They'll never get mine and probably will never get yours. BUT that doesn't mean that they won't throw your a$$ in prison if your found with one.

Obama had the good sense to choose the most qualified candidate to run our country should something happen to him, and didn't pander, but nice try. I'm a woman, and I'm certainly not offended by Obama's choice, I applaud it. John McCain, however, showed his true lack of judgement when he BLATANTLY tried to pander to women by just grabbing some chick, who isn't qualified for dogcatcher. That's pandering, and intelligent women all over, and I've talked to them, see right through it. See, here's the deal. Intelligent people don't want someone elected to RUN OUR COUNTRY just because they're just like you and me. Intelligent people want candidates who are smarter, the best, the most capable.

Yes, I'm talking about the Patriot Act and The Homeland Security Act. Guns are not specifically mentioned, but everything in those two pieces of legislation is designed so your home can be entered into without warrents, your phone calls and e-mails can be listened to illegally just because Homeland security might "suspect" something. "Suspect" being the opperative word. They don't have to have proof to come in and seize your assets at a moments notice.

Do we really want a tandem in office that graduated 5th from the bottom of his class (and gladly claims he barely passed) and a running mate that took 6 years and 5 city colleges (not a major University) to get that Journalism degree. Don't get me wrong, I don't begrudge them the time it took or that their grades weren't tops in their class. I just wouldn't hire them to work for my company.

We are not alone here and our current president has bungled Foreign Policy to the point that any other faux pas by another buffoon will put us in even further disdain by those we call our "allies".
The reality is, we probably won't lose our gun rights to ANY president. The reality is, we will not be ANY safer with a Republican in office - a Democratic President will listen to their Joint Chiefs of Staff (something the current Republican administration does NOT do) and react according to REAL information and not emotion, ego or stupidity. In fact, I believe we will be better for listening to our Generals and Admirals. They are the cream of the crop and smarter than many of the Presidents that have "led" them. I know several 4 star Generals and they are some of the most intelligent people I know. They also have your (our) safety in mind and would not jeopardize that for petty political wrangling. This is a global situation and the US cannot navigate it alone. We need to build on our relationships with our allies and mend the fences of those we have wronged in the past 8 years.
"Dumb and dumber" don't have the skill set to be President and I am not willing to have them add to the mess that their stupid cousin (Bush) has created.
I am tired of hearing how ridiculous the US is viewed by the rest of the world every time I travel for work. I am proud of being American, but I am also embarrassed to say so when I am out of the country. We need smarter people running this country, not the dude you want to have a beer with or the woman you want to date.

one more time.
policy.
policy.
policy.
obama's policys stances...according to the DATA...have a better track record of success than mccain's.
period.
if you want to base your vote on something other than POLICY STANCES...that's certainly your choice, mcrush...but i urge you to consider the more intelligent alternative.

Instead of looking for a real reason not to vote for the better person (Obama) for our Country. Why don't you just say "I will not vote for a black person"? I will respect that you are a bigot over just sounding stupid and not knowing what you are talking about. You cry over how people in the "media" are not fair to the prom queen. And I have had to hear crap about Obama over the last year and half about his wife, his pastor; he is a terrorist and so on, never about the real issues, just crap. That is how the people run if you got nothing better to offer the people of this Country.

Here it comes. The Left is already generating excuses for a possible Obama defeat by blaming it all on racism. No. If Obama loses it will be because the American People aren't quite ready to fully embrace the Socialism that Obama is offering. His race has nothing to do with it.
If America has any problem moving beyond racism - look to the Left. It is the Left that benefits from ever stoking the tribal fires of race, gender and class "war".

You are truly stupid, Wow there are a lot of you out there. Socialism is what is going on now under Bush. The biggest wealth re-distribution in history is taking place right now. The transfer of everyman's tax-dollars into a welfare program for the rich and reckless. Why are you "conservatives" so deathly afraid of taking accountability for your actions? I thought you were the "personal responsibility" party. When you're ready to man-up and admit you voted for idiots, then I'll cut you some slack for your abject ignorance. And, it seems to me, that everyone that has defended, stood up for or otherwise voted for these criminals has no credibility whatsoever. That is all of you who want four more years of this BS.

sorry, yiota.... as usual...the strawman arguments aren't going to fly here at the rmn.
you might try the blog at www.rushlimbaugh.com...that rhetoric gets a lot of play there.
let's recap.
the POLICY STANCES of obama's have a better track record than mccain's do.
now...if you're not going to base your vote on POLICY...maybe you should do the country a favor and stay home on election day.

again....this is a strawman argument, yiota.
why are you still confused about this, yiota?
again...if you're not going to base your vote on facts and policy stances...i urge you to stay home on election day.
the last thing this country needs is more ignorant, dogmatic voters at the polls.

I am curious to know what people think about McCain's chief of staff being gay. How many are hoping that Palin and her church will be successful in praying Mr. Buse out of homosexuality?

Sorry, Barron. Being a sitting Governor matters. The last democrat president was Governor of Arkansas. You really want to argue that Arkansas is more "cosmopolitan" than Alaska?""
Ummm, yes, actually. Clinton was Governor for more than 10 years and, guess what? He actually did something! Golly jeez, cowboy! Go ahead and post what palin did in her less than 2 years, i'm really interested (yawn). As far as budgets go, any bookkeeper or housewife knows how to put one of those together, so nice try but no cigar. Sorry cowboy, but lack of experience DOES count (unless you are just one-sided, like most of you guys are). See, it counts if you are Obama, but if you are palin it doesn't. Go figure...

I say: Hey now, I read the long posts! They usually have more substance than the short little ones; those are too often just regurgitations of sound bites and catchphrases. The only long ones I skip are from those readers who I have come to find are Crazy and/or Full of Crap. I will not name names, but if you read this and suspect that I may be referring to you, you just may be right . . . .
