Many DNC protesters fighting charges; click to see police mug shots

DNC protesters arrest mug composite.

Manuca Salazar came to downtown Denver to protest the war in Iraq on the first day of the Democratic National Convention.

The protest ended Aug. 25 with Salazar in police custody for 10 hours. The 22-year-old Denver child-care worker is charged with, among other things, "throwing stones or missiles."

She denies it and says she didn't see anyone else throwing rocks, either.

"I wasn't violent at all," Salazar said.

Salazar is among more than one-third of the demonstrators arrested during the convention who are expected to fight the charges against them.

Of 154 people arrested, 29 have pleaded not guilty and are demanding jury trials, said Brian Vicente of the People's Law Project, which is lining up defense attorneys for those arrested. Vicente said he expects another 30 to demand jury trials when they go before a judge in October.

About 75 have pleaded guilty, said Vince DiCroce, director of prosecutions for the city attorneys office.

In cases that go to trial, the city will have to produce witnesses who can testify that the arrested people committed the crimes with which they were charged, Vicente said. In Salazar's case, the city will need someone who saw her hurl an object, Vicente said.

Cathryn Hazouri, the executive director of the Colorado Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, said her group is studying the cases to determine whether to bring a civil suit against the city for the treatment of the protesters.

Among those who said he would join such a suit is Bryson Smith. He was arrested even though, he says, he was not protesting.

"I was on the street and I couldn't leave the street and I was arrested," said Smith, 20, who lives downtown and delivers pizzas.

Smith said he was headed back to his car after spending time on the 16th Street Mall when he wandered into the same area where Salazar was being arrested.

Smith spent about 23 hours in jail until he was bailed out by his father.

Smith said his friend, who also was arrested, pleaded guilty and was released after paying a small fine.

"I pleaded not guilty. I'm getting an attorney and I'm going to fight it," Smith said.

Among those who pleaded guilty was Mary Colsch, 75, of Caledonia, Minn. She was arrested on the second day of the convention with other anti-abortion protesters who were blocking a gate at the Pepsi Center.

She spent one day in jail rather than pay $149 in fines and court costs.

"To me, this life issue is the most important, and until we get to where abortion is illegal once again in the United States, that's where I'll be (on the issues)," Colsch said. "I don't care about any other issue."

Frank Anello, of Denver, said police grabbed him near the Auraria campus Aug. 24, the day before the convention began.

Anello, his pregnant wife and 3-year-old child were downtown to protest the war in Iraq.

He said the protest was already over, and Anello's wife was using a porta-potty when a Humvee full of police in riot gear arrived. He said he was arrested after refusing to give his name or let officers search his backpack.

Anello said his face was covered at the time. He had covered it during the protest because he didn't want police to identify him.

But, he said, police also had their faces covered.

If people really considered what kind of people (liberals, anarchists, and the pathetic creatures shown above) belong to the Democratic Party, they would never want to be associated with it.

It is one of the biggest reasons that I have no respect for anyone who calls himself a member of the Democratic Party.

When Obama accepts the backing and support of terrorists (like William Ayres) or his pastor and does not condemn their actions or words, how can he expect that anyone (with an ounce of common sense) will respect him or think that he should lead our country?

The disturbing part about this story is not the photos, but the fact we spent $50 million, set-up a separate facility to handle all the “criminals” and had to listen to all the hyperbole for several months leading up to the convention-all for 154 arrests.

That’s a ROI worthy of Wall Street.

Due process is expensive. Arresting and jailing, then trying all of these people will be expensive. If the police screwed up (with this many arrests, they're bound to have screwed up some of them), then the payouts will cost more. And that's for the innocent ones. I'm sure that most of the guilty ones would consider it a success if they lose their trial but clog our court system a bit more. Guess who gets to pay for this sort of fun...

Sorry Confusedone, but these folks are all dressed up in their finest costumes. This is the way they see themselves. As long as they want to be seen like this, we get to judge them like they want to be seen.

They are playing a game and love it. They remind me of an encounter my friend, who works for DOW had with protesters a few years ago. They were protesting a logging company's presence in "their" forest.

Their professionally-made signs claimed the cutting would bring silt into the watershed and destroy habitat for a certain fish. My friend told them that particular fish doesn't live at that altitude.

It wasn't any problem for the protestors. They simply went back to their cars and pulled out signs that claimed the loggers were destroying bear habitat.

Though "virtue" might matter to at least the guy with the tat, truth never seems to be the most important aspect of their protests.

What you don't understand is this is what separates this country from the ones you refer to. No matter what a person looks like we as Americans have the right to assemble and be heard when we disagree with the way our government is working. This nation was built on those principles. In fact over 200 years ago a lot of people died fighting for that right. Now there is a certain amount of people that think our country is doing a bang up job keeping spending down, fighting justified wars, stealing our social security money, invading our privacy with the patriot act. And that is just to name a few. Now it is people that stood up and fought for people like you to come and enjoy the things you are enjoying so either except our rights or go back home and deal with countries that if you say anything your either put in prison or better yet shot.

And yes a couple of the guys have long hair. So did Jesus, who if you were there back in the day you'd be calling a smelly protester who should have no rights. I'm not comparing the protesters to Jesus, but pointing out that being judgmental against how people appear is an age old phenomenon. Face it, most of you don't care about how these folks look, you don't like that they were protesting (a first amendment right that, if taken away, makes us like countries like China, where protesters are jailed), and are being vindictive against what most likely were pretty benign arrests and, in many cases, quite possibly an overreaction by police. Before you jump on me, I do believe that anyone who was violent against the police, or destroyed property should be prosecuted. But I do think some of these folks were caught up in sweeps that were totally an overreaction.

Judge on. I'm sure I won't stop you.

I guess those unemployed folks will have more time to protest at the next DNC, while Obama makes speeches about supporting "the working folks" and slurps down fabulous meals with the fat cats who exploit them.

How many of you people who are judging based on a few pictures were actually there? I'm going to take a guess and say not a single one of you were.
I was there for most of the protests during the DNC (not taking part, just observing and taking photos), and both the police and the various Marxist and Anarchist groups are really exaggerating what happened.
There were a small handful of cases where people threw debris at police. This was pretty rare, however. That said, a very large number were verbally antagonizing the police, and there were many times when they "locked up" and marched towards lines of police.
I've read quite a few accounts, particularly in Rocky Mountain News, that would give the impression for several of the protests that the demonstrators were very aggressive. For the most part, this is simply untrue.
On the other hand, many demonstrators who claimed that they were entirely peaceful and were not the slightest bit hostile are not being truthful either.
The reality was somewhere in between the extreme that both sides are presenting, and there were in fact multiple people being arrested simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Who is anybody here to decide whether these people committed a crime or not based on a picture?

When all is said and done, Barry is a candidate who has voted along liberal party lines 100% of the time and has associated with, or emulated the likes of Saul Alinsky, Louis Farrakhan, Tony Rezko, Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Malcolm X and David Axelrod.
