McCain backer, Schaffer make pitch to Hispanic voters

A former congressman who grew up speaking Spanish in the projects urged Coloradans to take to their neighborhoods to help elect Republicans in November.
Henry Bonilla of Texas told the Colorado Republican National Hispanic Assembly on Friday that "one on one" contact with voters is crucial to making sure John McCain wins the presidency and Bob Schaffer the U.S. Senate seat.
"The other side is just so down on America," Bonilla said. "This is too important to let somebody else do the work, to not make those phone calls, not step it up a notch."
Bonilla and Schaffer were the featured speakers during a Hispanic Assembly lunch in north Denver. Bonilla had just arrived from Pueblo and Colorado Springs, where he was campaigning for McCain.
"John McCain's record of Hispanic outreach is rock solid and goes back decades," Bonilla said, noting that Barack Obama did not win the majority of Hispanic support during the Democratic primary.
Schaffer took his usual jabs at his Democratic opponent, saying U.S. Rep. Mark Udall is on the wrong side of energy development. He also urged Republicans to "send a compelling message back to the statehouse as well." Democrats control the governor's office and the legislature.
"They're overreaching on taxes, on union organization and some of the things they've done to set business back in this state is not something Coloradans are willing to tolerate any longer," Schaffer said.
Schaffer was introduced by his campaign manager, Dick Wadhams, who also is chairman of the state GOP. Wadhams reminded the group of Schaffer's efforts to help inner-city kids, many of them Latino, who are struggling in their schools.
"I think that says everything you need to know about Bob Schaffer and his concerns for Colorado's Hispanic community," Wadhams said.

"Usual jabs."
If this reporter were to give Schaffer any level of fairness, without the usual jabs, he'd think he's in mortal danger of favoring Schaffer. And this is the first mention of a Republican minority group I've ever seen in this newspaper.
Not mentioned is Mark Udall of Eldorado Springs. Maybe he moved to Colorado Springs. I need assurance.

HOW MUCH WILL YOUR INCOME TAX GO DOWN? -- I hope these links make it easier for you to determine which tax plan is best for you.
Keep in mind that the tax plan must be voted in by the congress. It is a Democratic congress so the odds are high that the McCain plan wouldn't pass through congress even if he won the presidency. If Obama wins the presidency, his plan would have a significantly better chance of being voted in.
Here is the link to get the full 56-page comparison of the two tax plans published by the independent Tax Policy Center.
