When the Broncos run the ball

* The skinny: The Broncos certainly couldn't make things go in their last trip to Oakland - they gained 86 yards on 29 carries in December - but the Raiders struggled most of 2007 against opponents' backs, and the only significant change on defense was to acquire former Giants safety Gibril Wilson. Wilson's signing, to play strong safety, moves Michael Huff to free safety, where the Raiders are hoping the 2006 first-rounder will have more room to use his speed and find the level they hoped to see long before now.

* It's a fact: Last season, 10 running backs rushed for at least 100 yards against the Raiders, and four of those rushed for at least 150 yards. That total included 128 yards from former Broncos back Travis Henry in Week 2.

Advantage: Broncos

When the Broncos pass the ball

* The skinny: The Broncos will play this one without receiver Brandon Marshall, who is serving a one-game suspension for violating the league's conduct policy. That means the Broncos will have to find some impact elsewhere in the formation against Oakland's top-shelf set of cornerbacks. Also, with a rookie left tackle in Ryan Clady and a first-year starting right tackle in Ryan Harris without Marshall on the outside, the Raiders figure to be aggressive in the rush early and play single coverage on the outside to see how the Broncos react. They'll keep coming if the Broncos can't handle their business.

* It's a fact: The Raiders are the only team in the league that has intercepted Jay Cutler more than three times. The Raiders have picked off four passes in two Cutler starts against them.

Advantage: Broncos

When the Raiders run the ball

* The skinny: Most personnel executives around the league are not enthralled with the Raiders' offensive line, especially the right side, where former Broncos Cornell Green and Cooper Carlisle play. They signed Kwame Harris in free agency and quickly moved him to the left tackle spot. But the backfield is another matter. Out of a similar zone-run scheme the Broncos run, the Raiders can send Justin Fargas (146 yards in December against the Broncos) or first-round pick Darren McFadden at a defense. For much of 2007, the Broncos had no answer for backs such as that.

* It's a fact: McFadden was one of six running backs in the league to average at least 5 yards per carry in the preseason. Four of those players, including McFadden, were rookies.

Advantage: Raiders

When the Raiders pass the ball

* The skinny: This could be a struggle for the Raiders all season if quarterback JaMarcus Russell can't get the ball out quickly. They don't have much depth at receiver - they signed former Broncos player Ashley Lelie just days before the season started - and Russell didn't always look decisive in the preseason. Russell started only one game as a rookie in 2007, so he still is facing a long developmental curve. Right now, he has the double dip of trouble, in that he hasn't been all that accurate and often holds the ball too long in the pocket.

* It's a fact: In his preseason finale against Arizona, when he faced largely starters across from him, Russell was sacked four times. He also was sacked four times in his only start in 2007.

Advantage: Broncos

Special teams

* The skinny: The Broncos have a rookie punter, a rookie returner and a kicker who has made only one career field goal in a regular-season game. They have piles of potential in all three spots, but until they perform in games that get added in the standings, they are a collective question mark. Kicker Matt Prater and punter Brett Kern showed huge legs in the preseason, but a nationally televised opener on the road against a longtime division rival is another matter entirely.

* It's a fact: Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski made three kicks from at least 52 yards last season. Also, eight of his nine misses last season came from at least 40 yards.

Advantage: Raiders

Intangibles

* The skinny: The Raiders certainly are not the most stable of teams, with rumblings around the league coach Lane Kiffin and owner Al Davis are not even on the same book, let alone being on the same page. Kiffin also is believed to have tried to replace defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in the offseason only to be overruled by Davis. But it is the season opener, it is nationally televised and even teams in trouble usually can muster something to begin the season at home, especially because the Raiders can run the ball to settle things down.

Advantage: Raiders

Jeff Legwold's prediction: Broncos 27-20

I always love when the camera pans in on the Raider fans; they are pure ugly to the bone. Those outfits are the bomb. Broncos aren't my favorite team, but they hold the number 2 spot. I hope they plaster the Raiders. A lot is expected of Cutler this year, I'm sure he'll deliver. My favorite team only shows up here in Denver once in a blue moon. This year they have Brett Farve; hope the Jets do something this year. And then there the lonely Lions, one of the oldest franchises never to see a superbowl appearence. I always have wondered about that, is it a curse or what? I hope the Broncos have a great year, and the Jets a better one!

Hey Jonnyrotten, many years ago in prison, I knew an old man who could not read or write, (kind of like me, only worse), but the boy's crime netted him over 250,000 dollars in 2 months. It was so simple so ingenious, that they are still unable to stop it today. He was caught by sheer luck. I can't tell you what he did, law enforcement wouldn't appreciate that much, especially posting it on line. That simple mind created a caper they have yet to be able to stop today. I told a friend in law enforcement a few years ago, a Gyncoe graduate, what the man did, and he looked at me serious as hell and asked me never to repeat it. The old man's dead now, but someday, I know someone is going to do this caper again, I'm sure of it. That's when I learned to quit laughing and start paying attention to those I once considered harmless or uneducated, you just never know pal!

One thing I must admit about Al Davis, he makes a team out of other teams cast-offs. Boy made his last Superbowl appearence that way; too bad he was beaten by his own cast-off coach. Bronco's coach is an Davis cast-off, and he's kicked Davis good so far. Davis shouldn't have welched and paid the man what he was owed. Al Davis is so wretched, he's a a necromancer's dream; the fans look fresher in thier regalia and costumes than Al does. I love those Raider fans and thier Al Davis Hollows Eve get-ups! Bronco's will play them a wonderful funeral durge for sure. Glad Al doesn't sit in the sunlight, someone needs to encourage him to use a skin emollient to get rid of that alligator hide of his too! But hell, then he wouldn't be a Raider would he now. The fans dress up, Al's for real! Go Jets!

It never ceases to amaze me how delusional Donkeys fans are. Never mind that they are coming off a 34-20 thrashing by the Raiders (the Raiders beat them in the first game in Denver as well, if not for a bogus time out that forced a re-kick of the winning field goal). Never mind that they are coming off a 7-9 season. Never mind that they got worse over the off-season, while the Raiders got better (they now have the best corners in the league). Never mind that the Raiders now have three monster running backs.

You are reading something that was never written. Come out of your fantasy world. Yes, people talked about the leper, Davis (I wonder if they can reopen those colonies in Hawaii?). Nobody threatened him. Again, you're lying.
singularity99, forgot to add this, where do you come up with the "best corners in the league"? Garbage. They may be good, but hardly the best. Champ is well, the "Champ". His Pro bowl record speaks for itself. Compare Halls, stats, to Champs, then get back to us. And we got worse, huh? We gave you Walker. Our "cast off". You got "Miss Ashlie" (not Ashley, that's a mans name). Nobody wanted him. Not us, not Atlanta, not your cousins, the 49ers, so what happens when nobody wants him, they send them to the Raiders? Yeah, you are just impressing the heck out of us. And I'd take our FB, Hillis, over any RB you have. Still unproven in the NFL, but so is your RB. Get a clue.

Same with Nate Jackson. Watch out for our running game, as well. If we get it rolling, as is the plan, I'm sure, then the passing game will open up and be hard for the Raiders to stop. But, we, and everyone else can "speculate" all day. Monday night will answer a lot of questions on both sides of the ball. That's what makes football sooooo fun. Which is it, past records don't matter or they do? You can't have it both ways (well in Denver I guess you can, much like San Fran). Over the last several years Denver has had their way with the Raiders. Last year they split. This year is yet another chapter to the epic saga that is our rivalry.

We for some reason have not 1 but 2 former WR's from Denver........that one doesn't sit well with most of us either, but there's nothing we can do about it. Most WR's are headcases anyway so why not your ex's?

Some of you (and my Raider brotheren) have missed the facts about this game. Both teams are without their best WR. Ours is just out for the entire year. The Raiders are also without their blocking FB for the year. They do have 3 very capible RB's, one who torched you twice last season.

Both teams have made moves to improve their run D. Who has done more? The answer to that question will come in a few short hours. The team that has done the most to stop the run wins. If EITHER team has to depend on the passing game to win, they lose.

If Cutler has to try to pick our secondary apart, he will get picked, just like last year. Our LB's are also ballhawks though. If he tries to hit your TE's over the middle he better have it on a rope.

Russel isn't going to have a walk in the park either. The WR's are very suspect (except for Curry) but who am I telling? We do have a very good young TE in Miller, who Russel has had no problems finding.

It will be entertaining no matter what the outcome. Both teams want to start the year off with a win, but only one will. The best team will win and be holding at least a share of the lead in the Division. Much better then the alternative.

Oh, I also read on USA Today that they have Scheffler listed to start over Nate. Not sure how accurate that is? But Cutler is more calm in the pocket now. And even though I know he will go downfield as he does, I think he will hit receivers out of the slot. I think what is going to determine how our passing game goes, is by how our running game does. If Young, Hall, Pittman, Hillis have success, it could prove a very long day for the Raiders. As you said, that's on both sides. If we can't stop the run..... The Record is 19-61 (16 games X 5 years = 80, check your own math rocket scientist) It seems that WE Raiders fan's aren't the only mathmatically challenged people in the league now are we?

Yes, over the last 5 years the Bronco's have been better then the Raiders, but who hasn't? There were a couple of years that they would have had trouble beating a Division 1A college team, so what is your point? Lets look at your beloved Bronco's own checkered past and I bet you would find a few years that you would like to have forgotten about too.

The Raiders have gone through more HC's then you guys have gone through RB's the last 5 years, two of which never should have been given the chance to coach anywhere. (Thanks Al)

Times change. Team's change. If your dwelling on the past your missing the present. We will find out tomorrow night who has done what was needed to climb to the top of the AFC West and get back into the playoffs.

Same one I have about tomorrows game. Broncos will take care of business. They will beat the spread. Hey Ling_ling, sorry about your team, today.... NOT! Anyways, I have several friends over (one is a Chargers fan, ha, ha). One is a Raiders fan (his wife is a Broncos fan, ha, ha). We have 2 Steelers fans and my gal pal (Broncos). Barbecue, St. Pauli Girl and Michelob and a bottle of Bookers. The next game is coming on (Bears and Colts). Have to go. Talk to everyone on Tuesday to chat about those 1st place BRONCOS!!

RaiderNation, funny usually my math is pretty good. I guess I deserve the "rocket scientist" comment. I am not trying to get you riled up but several other Raider fans can't seem to understand that for the last few years the Broncos have been better than the Raiders. No matter what the score or the record at the end of the year they always claim that the Broncos $uck and the Raiders are the best. You are one of the few that can or more importantly will have a civil debate and at the end of the day realize that it's just a game. I have been a fan since '72 and always will be so yes there have been a few years that made me want to bury my head in the sand, last year being one of them. Can't wait to hear from you tomorrow night, hopefully you will be eating crow and not me but either way I'll be here.

It pains me to have to admit this, but there is 1 Raider fan who can formulate a sentence. Even type and understand simple math. RN 951 you must be lonely in the stands in Oakland and I feel for your recent pain.

Of course I wish you more frustration for decades to come. Nothing personal of course.

    Broncos 34 Raiders 10
    check back tomorrow RN951

Yeah, RaiderNation951 writes some decent posts. Hey, I had a Raiders fan over yesterday to watch the games with his wife (she's a Broncos fan) and 2 Steelers fans along with my gal pal (Broncos fan). My ex was a Raiders fan (no, that's not why we split up, ha, ha). But, RaiderNation951, knows how to keep it fun. That's what makes it fun. But there are those who take it to the extreme. Football is about debate, smack-talking, etc., but "sometimes"...........

Deadwingstuck, (I had to change your name, RMN won't let it post because of lanquage) yeah, I have $200 on tonights game at the casino. Vegas is all about the betting and the winning (unless you're a Raiders fan). Denver will beat the spread and I will have a drink in honor of all of the fallen Raiders fans, commiting suicide, all around Oakland.
