4.10 ERA for Aaron Cook, the highest it has been since April 2, when he made his first start of the season and gave up four runs in six innings for a 6.00 ERA. Cook has pitched 5 2/3 innings or less in five of his past six starts, going 2-3 with a 7.12 ERA in that stretch.
While making his second major league appearance Wednesday, Steven Register became the seventh Rockies pitcher to yield back-to-back homers this season. It has happened twice in the past seven games and three times in the past 19:
Sept. 3: Register, Giants HR: Pablo Sandoval, Scott McClain
Aug. 27: Hernandez, at Giants HR: Sandoval, Bengie Molina
Aug. 14: Rusch, Diamondbacks HR: Chris Snyder, Chris Burke
June 30: Vizcaino, Padres HR: Jody Gerut, Edgar Gonzalez
June 6: Jimenez, Brewers HR: Russell Branyan, J.J. Hardy
May 30: Cook, at Cubs HR: Kosuke Fukudome, Jim Edmonds
May 23: Reynolds, Mets HR: Carlos Delgado, Fernando Tatis
MOVING AHEAD
On July 21, Troy Tulowitzki, having recovered from a hand injury, ended his second stint of the season on the disabled list. He was hitting .166 but has since gone 48-for-147 (.327) to raise his average to .247 and appears to have things back in order offensively.
"I'd like to think so," Tulowitzki said. "I've done pretty well the second half. It's still been a tough season, the first half to get off as slow as I did. But I'm making it respectable. There's still some games to go to make it even more respectable."
ETC.
Brian Fuentes has at least one strikeout in 11 consecutive games and 23 of his past 24 since July 3. He has totaled 42 strikeouts in 232/3 innings in that span, an average of 15.97 strikeouts per nine innings. . . . Brad Hawpe is hitting .292 in 312 at-bats against right-handed pitchers and .294 in 109 at-bats against left-handers. . . . Matt Holliday has one hit in his past 18 at-bats, a five-game slide that has dropped his average 11 points to .328. That's the lowest it has been since he was hitting .328 on June 27. . . . Clint Barmes went 71 at-bats without a home run before ending the drought Wednesday against San Francisco left-hander Barry Zito. It was Barmes' first homer since Aug. 13 when he moved into the leadoff spot and connected against Arizona left-hander Doug Davis. The home run against Zito also broke Barmes' string of 10 hitless at-bats. . . . Ian Stewart has three hits in his past 22 at-bats, and Willy Taveras has gone five for his past 33. . . . Garrett Atkins, who has a respectable 80 strikeouts in 540 at-bats, has struck out at least once in a season-high seven consecutive games. His previous longest stretch was five consecutive games with at least one strikeout April 11-16. . . . Chris Iannetta has gone 7-for-17 with eight walks in his past seven games to raise his average to .277 and his on-base percentage to .399.
