CU report: Shifts on the line

Junior Devin Head's one-game suspension for an undisclosed team violation likely will put true freshman Max Tuioti-Mariner in the starting lineup at right guard for Saturday's game against Eastern Washington (1:30 p.m., Folsom Field).

Suspended indefinitely Monday was reserve redshirt freshman offensive tackle Ethan Adkins, who, according to Boulder police, was arrested early Monday for driving under the influence.

Tuioti-Mariner, who played Sunday night in CU's 38-17 win against Colorado State, said he calmed himself before the opener by listening to Bob Marley. He also sang Marley's Buffalo Soldier when the Buffaloes' rookies performed during preseason camp.

His geography might need brushing up, but Tuioti-Mariner said Buffalo Soldier seems based on the Buffs: "(The line) heart of America, we're pretty much in the center of America, too."

CU's depth chart lists redshirt freshman Blake Behrens as the starter at right guard, backed up by redshirt freshman Shawn Daniels.

Same role for Scott

Freshman tailback Darrell Scott, who rushed 11 times for 54 yards and a touchdown Sunday, likely will come off the bench again in relief of starter Demetrius Sumler, coach Dan Hawkins said.

Hawkins said Scott "got into a rhythm" on CU's decisive 18-play, 74-yard drive in the third quarter. He also said freshman Rodney "Speedy" Stewart (four carries, 38 yards) appeared "out the gate" on a second-quarter screen pass attempt that was batted and intercepted at the line of scrimmage.

Instead, Hawkins said, "the gate was slammed shut."

Etc.

* The father's Game 1 critique of his son/quarterback: "So-so." Dan said Cody Hawkins has had "more put on him" as a second-year starter in a new offense and, for the most part, has responded well.

* Junior inside linebacker Jeff Smart was "reminiscent of Jordon (Dizon)" in the opener, Hawkins said. Smart made a team-best 12 tackles (11 unassisted).
