GOP notebook

* Here comes McCain: More proof that Colorado is a battleground state - John McCain, his wife Cindy, and running mate Sarah Palin will be coming to Colorado Springs on Saturday for a "Road to Victory" party.

Doors open at 9 a.m. at the Colorado Jet Center. For information, go to: johnmccain.com/Roadto Victory/CO.htm

* Prime real estate: And have we mentioned Colorado is a battleground state? The delegation has great seats at the Republican National Convention. So do Ohio, Florida and Michigan - all key places for the Republicans (and Democrats). They're all front and center.

* Sharp tongue, quick wit: When it comes to making digs, Colorado GOP Chairman Dick Wadhams is the master.

During the Colorado delegation breakfast Monday, he introduced the former governor of Idaho and then the governor of Utah.

"It sure makes me think, 'I wish we had a governor,' " Wadhams said to laughter.

Wadhams frequently takes shots at Democratic Gov. Bill Ritter.

Wadhams also was critical of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama at Invesco Field at Mile High last week, calling it "a self-worshipping event."

* It's cold even when it's warm: It was so cold at the Xcel Energy Center . . .

How cold was it?

It was so cold that women vowed not to wear sandals today.

It was so cold that Ann Kirk, wife of delegate Tom Kirk, missed first lady Laura Bush's speech because she went outside to warm up.

It was so cold delegates joked that Xcel doesn't have to worry about running up a big bill.

* Boomer Sooner: Coloradans began chanting "J.C." in their hotel lobby Monday afternoon.

That's because they share a hotel with the Oklahoma delegation, and who should show up but J. C. Watts Jr. - the former congressman from Oklahoma. He also was a star football player for the Sooners, but none of the CU Buffaloes fans in the delegation seemed to hold it against him.

Also seen in the lobby: delegates lining up to have their picture taken with CNN's Candy Crowley.

* Watch it, mister: Delegate Wayne Williams of Colorado Springs said after his wife found out who his roommate was, she warned him not to get too wild. That brought a big laugh from delegates.

Williams' roommate is Colorado Attorney General John Suthers.
