"He's a blue-chip player. This year isn't the story he wanted to write. The first chapter, though, was great. He's going to be a big part of what we accomplish here."
Clint Hurdle, Rockies manager, on the second-year challenges for shortstop Troy Tulowitzki.
6 shutouts for the Rockies pitching staff this season, including three at Coors Field. The six shutouts are two shy of the franchise record set in 2001 and equaled in 2002 and 2006. Colorado had seven shutouts last year. The three shutouts at Coors equals the second-most in franchise history to six in 2006. The Rockies also had three shutouts at Coors in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2008. They have thrown 27 of the 71 shutouts in franchise history at Coors Field.
Will the Rockies make the postseason?
Center fielder Dexter Fowler who appeared in both the Futures Games and the Olympics, is headed to Coors Field.
Fowler finished up his season with Double-A Tulsa on Monday, going 3-for-5, giving him a .335 batting average with 31 doubles, nine triples, nine home runs, 64 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 28 attempts. Fowler is expected to be in uniform tonight for the Rockies.
Outfielder Ryan Spilborghs was activated from the disabled list and right-hander Steven Register was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Monday, the day active rosters expanded from 25 to 40. Other additions will be announced today, including right-hander Matt Herges coming off the disabled list.
Other callups are expected to include catcher Edwin Bellorin, right-handers Oscar Villareal and Jason Hirsh and first baseman Joe Koshansky.
ETC.
Catcher Yorvit Torrealba met with team doctors Monday and said he expects to have surgery Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. "I was told I will be able to walk out of the room when it is over," said Torrealba, expecting a speedy recovery. . . . Jeff Baker started at third base for only the 16th time in his big-league career. "I've played a lot of third base, just not at the big-league level," said Baker, who was drafted and signed as a third baseman but is in a utility role in the big leagues. . . . The Rockies' win was their third this season in which they had four hits or fewer. They were three-hit in a 4-1 win May 25 against the Mets at Coors Field, and four-hit in a 3-2 win Aug. 3 at Florida. . . . The Rockies are 23- 15 in games against left- handed starting pitchers. Three of the losses were in games started by San Francisco left-hander Jon- athan Sanchez, who started and suffered the loss Monday. . . . Roster additions for the Giants included third baseman Scott McClain, who played for Triple-A Colorado Springs in 2000. McClain, the only active player with 1,000 runs and 1,000 RBI in the minors, has hit 355 professional home runs.

Man, the Rockies are loaded with very good outfielders. They've also got a few infielders such as Jeff Baker who would make for good trade material. Taveras, Podsednik or Seth Smith along with Baker for a quality major league arm, maybe even Koshansky or Quintanilla. They have some good pieces to deal with to get a number two or three starter. The untouchables would be Holliday, Hawpe, Spilborghs, Fowler, Stewart, Tulo, Atkins and Ianetta. I don't think I'd let Barmes go either. It should be an interesting off season.
