Obama leads McCain by 12 points in Colorado polls
Poll: Unaffiliated voters shifting to Dem candidate

Sen. Barack Obama has surged to a commanding, double-digit lead in Colorado amid soaring anxiety about the country's direction and a massive shift of independent voters into the Democratic column, a new poll finds.
After weeks of devastating economic news, Obama now leads by 12 percentage points - 52 percent to 40 percent - in the latest Rocky Mountain News/CBS4 News poll.
"Clearly, the beginning of October is not a happy time in American history, and voters are sort of internalizing the financial crisis," said pollster Lori Weigel.
Since early August, when Colorado independents were almost evenly split between the two presidential candidates, Obama has opened up a more than 2-to-1 advantage in that pivotal voting group, the poll found.
In the latest survey, only 11 percent of Coloradans said the country was heading in the right direction, while 83 percent said it was on the wrong track.
At a time when Republicans control the White House, that pessimism has created a steep climb for Sen. John McCain, who is now struggling to stay competitive in Colorado and several other states that President Bush carried in 2004.
"You've got a difficult war. You've got now a very, very pessimistic electorate that's laser-focused on the economy as an issue," Weigel said. "There are plenty of campaigns that have had to run uphill. This is not running uphill. This is downhill skiing uphill."
The survey of 500 likely Colorado voters was conducted Tuesday through Thursday by Public Opinion Strategies of Alexandria, Va., the largest Republican polling firm in the country. Obama's lead was well outside the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 4.38 percentage points.
Longtime Democratic consultant Rick Ridder, who consulted on the poll, said the economic tempest has created a tidal wave for change.
Obama has been able to "get on the surfboard" and ride the wave, Ridder said.
The new poll shows Obama has made marked gains among numerous crucial voting blocks since this summer.
A Rocky Mountain News poll in August gave McCain a 3 percentage point lead overall, and wider leads among seniors, middle-age voters and anyone over age 35. But in the latest survey, that advantage is gone. Obama leads among every age group, including the over-65 crowd.
"People talk about the extraordinary support that Barack Obama has, for instance, among youth voters," Ridder said. "Yes, he does. But he has broadened that coalition significantly . . . now to older voters as well."
The biggest shift is among unaffiliated voters, who now outnumber Republicans as the largest voting group in the state.
In August, Obama led among independents by 2 percentage points, 36 percent to 34 percent. In the new poll, he led 58 percent to 27 percent, and the advantage was little changed based on the age or gender of the independents.
Back then, McCain had a double-digit lead among men, but that's down to a 2 percentage-point edge. Meanwhile, the poll shows Obama has opened up a 24 percentage point advantage among Colorado women, 58 percent to 34 percent, mirroring a trend that has been reported in polls throughout the country.
Weigel calls it part of "a tidal shift."
"Every single subgroup is decidedly more Democratic today in Colorado," she said.
The poll results were released Friday, when McCain was campaigning in the state and the stock market yet again was dropping hundreds of points.
"I'm never one to count John McCain out. The man does his best when his back's against the wall," Weigel said. "Obviously, this is difficult and challenging data."

Middle Class Citizens! This is great and should help to cut through all the back and forth going on between the candidates. Obama-Biden have a Tax Calculation which lets you see how much you'd save under his tax plan, it's on their website, www.barackobama.com. We, my husband and I, will save $1300 a year under Obama's plan, only $300 under McCain's. Pretty cool! I didn't believe for one moment that the man who couldn't even bring himself to utter the words "Middle Class" during any of the debates or his campaign would really be trying to help me and my family. Now I can "see" the difference. With the price of gas and groceries continuing to climb, an extra $100+ a month would go along way. I don't care what color the president is, especially if his plans help my bottomline. Sincerely yours, from the Middle Class (where we don't pretend we are upper class and don't knowingly vote for people who make the upper class wealthier)!

Five Stages Of Grief
1. Denial and Isolation.
At first, we tend to deny the loss has taken place, and may withdraw from our usual social contacts. This stage may last a few moments, or longer.
2. Anger.
The grieving person may then be furious at the person who inflicted the hurt (even if she's dead), or at the world, for letting it happen. He may be angry with himself for letting the event take place, even if, realistically, nothing could have stopped it.
3. Bargaining.
Now the grieving person may make bargains with God, asking, "If I do this, will you take away the loss?"
4. Depression.
The person feels numb, although anger and sadness may remain underneath.
5. Acceptance.
This is when the anger, sadness and mourning have tapered off. The person simply accepts the reality of the loss.

You guys are right, the only way Obama loses this lead is if the Republicans pull of their dirty tricks and their fear tactics. Because only the Republicans use these tactics. Democrats don't do this at all. They are totally honest and good politicans (even though such a phrase doesn't exist). I'm a Republican but unlike Dems at least I admit that both parties are exactly the same at their roots - they are politicians and in the end they are all the same. I couldn't care less who wins this election but at least I am smart enough to realize that each party has its pluses and minuses. Neither one is exactly right or wrong. Obama isn't going to save us all, and McCain isn't going to run us into the ground, despite what you may think you know. It's funny, you all may think you have this savior and are saying "wake up America and vote for Obama." But really, that's not going to change anything. He's not this great change that you all think he is. If you really want to be accurate, you need to be out there preaching "wake up America, and if we really want a change we need to get away from this 2 party system and have at least 3 strong parties, if not more." That's what our focus needs to be on. Only then will we see true change. But until then, I'll still be a Republican supporter, but I'm not going to be blind and ignorant and act like my party has all the answers to every problem in the world.

Too late. You neo-cons have that distinction.
reagan ran up monster deficit and when we got a bloody noise in beruit, he showed the yellow belly that he had. Worse, that encouraged AQ.
And W had an easily traceable fear of serving in 'nam, unlike ppl like al gore and john kerry. In addition, W ran up an even larger deficit than did reagan.
And both reagan and W certainly have some of the most corrupt admins of the last 100 years (there was another pub that was more corrupt than both of them, but these 2 remain in the top 4). Iran-Contra; The numerous ppl serving reagan that went to prison or even simply fired.
No, my prediction is that Obama is going to run a clean admin. What I want to know is, will he release the reagan papers that W pushed an XO to prevent and will he fully investigate W's actions? I am sick and tired of each successive admin allowing the previous ones to go. Ford issued a pardon to Nixon; Poppa Bush issued a pardon to reagan. W allowed libby to go, and will almost certainly pardon a NUMBER of neo-cons in the coming months.
As for spineless, I suspect that few countries will feel the need to take us on. Obama is far more likely to get honest agreements in place, rather then resorting to name calling. I would not be surprised to see him capture OBL, where as their is enough evidence about tora bora to indicate that W did not want OBL captured, even though we had him and his top ppl. It would have ended this nightmare far too early.
My suggestion to neo-cons like yourself, is to think before you open your mouth.

mmannino, it's too bad you don't see Obama as a uniting force. When I, and I think most Americans, look at the totality of the two campaigns, they generally see McCain's campaign as negative and partisan, and they see Obama's campaign as much less negative and partisan. Polls have shown this. The very terms used by the McCain campaign, such as "terrorist" and "socialist", are meant to be polarizing and fear mongering. The whole intent of the use of those words is to scare voters into voting for McCain. That is the essence of division among people. Obama has kept to a common theme of his policies. His tax plan essentially puts the tax rates back to what they were before Bush43. Interestingly, McCain opposed Bush's tax cuts when Bush first proposed them. Later, McCain changed his mind and was for the Bush tax cuts. Here's a video of McCain on Meet the Press discussing his initial opposition to the tax cuts and his subsequent change of mind:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYsKiA...
McCain opposed the Bush tax cuts because he said they didn't help the middle class enough. So, to say Obama is a socialist without recognizing McCain's own opposition to Bush's tax cuts for similar reasons is dishonest. Why wasn't McCain a socialist back when he opposed Bush's tax cuts?
And what about nationalization of the banks? Isn't that socialism? Wasn't bank nationalization pushed through largely by McCain and Bush?
My basic point is we have to work together to solve the huge problems facing us, and Obama's whole campaign has been one of positive policy points, rather than divisive character attacks. By contrast, McCain's campaign has been more characterized by divisive character attacks.

He has hinted that he favors reparations.
Nationalization of the banks and financial institutions is socialism, large scale socialism. However it was not planned. It will hopefully be temporary. I am not sure it is a good policy. Obama and the Democrats do not favor temporary socialism. They favor massive, permanent socialism.
Now when a socialist gets elected we are supposed to work together. If you and other leftists are so enamored with working together, where were you the last 8 years? You do not want to work together. It's one thing to work together with your opposition. It's another thing to just lie down and let them steamroll right over you. Unfortunately, too many Democrats in Congress did exactly that.
Billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of dead people later, we're mired in an endless war, despite the hollow cries of "victory."
Perhaps one day some of you will wake up and realize the reason we're still in Iraq is because it's making Bush's cronies a hell of a lot of money. If you had any idea of how much Treasury has been looted by private war contractors, you might take a different view.
Thank God that at least the Dems didn't roll over on Social Security and piss the rest of our money away in the stock market.

Besides the obvious concern about the qualifications of Obama, this election is about which way the country will go. Socialism(Democrats) or Capitalism(Republicans).
Obama plans to give your hard earned tax dollars to 100 million American who do not have to pay taxes or do not have to file taxes. This is not a tax cut but a welfare cheque.
He does not want to give small or large businesses a tax break but wants to raise business and corporate taxes. This will never produce a single job.
He plans to give unions power similar to unions in Canada, which have destroyed Canada’s auto and manufacturing industries.
He wants to renegotiate the free trade agreements, because the unions with their ever increasing demands have made it harder for American corporations and small businesses to compete with global trading partners.
He wants to talk, with out any conditions to radical terrorists and dictators from Cuba, South America and Europe.
He wants to jump into a new and prolonged un-winnable war of 10, 15 or 25 years in Afghanistan, without any time frame or exit strategy.
Barack Hussein Obama is a lawyer with no historical perspective, but with great rhetoric and hype of hope and change. He is social worker; a Junior legislator of less than 2 years, who votes present 40% of the time and votes 100% along party lines. He or Biden do not have a record of change. No change, with zero accomplishments.
The Osama’s financed their house from a convicted money launderer, has a racist preacher as his spiritual adviser, associates with an unrepentant Williams Ayers a 60's radical who admits to bombings of government buildings. His wife, until recently was not proud of America. Not the time for an unqualified Junior or on the job training program. Keep smiling…

The parallels between Barack Obama and Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe are striking. When Mugabe came to power in 1980, there was talk of peace, co-operation, change and hope. Much like present day America, Mugabe was swept into power via a wave of popular support from the press and the ignorant masses, after decades of ‘white colonial rule.’
Mugabe’s move toward government control and redistribution of wealth has all but left Zimbabwe in ruins. Obama must have have studied the rise of Robert Mugabe before he began his presidential campaign (http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200312...).
In any case, Obama’s voting record and long list of associations decry everything that he has been saying on the campaign trail. As you Dems begin dancing in the street, or whatever it is that you people do, please keep in mind that Obama may not be who he says he is…

Obama is a socialist. (McCain voted for the recent bank socialization package).

Obama had a close relationship with a racist preacher. (McCain has faked his piety, well known he wasn't a religious man before this election)
Obama had a close relationship with a corrupt developer. (McCain has several close advisors that made millions from companies involved in the collapse)
Obama favors the fairness doctrine. (Oh, yea, that evil "fairness" thing. What? McCain favors the "UNfairness doctrine?..LOL)

That all changed today. I placed an Obama/Biden sign in my yard in a highly Republican neighborhood, I volunteered to work at an Obama headquarters, and I RSVP'd to attend tomorrow's rally at Civic Center. The reason? I will not tolerate politics of hate and divisiveness, nor will I tolerate politics of complete ignorance. Hate and divisiveness - the continued references to pro- and anti-American people and geographical area; we recognize the code words. Ignorance - very simply stated - Sarah Palin. She pushed me over the edge yesterday with her denigration of "fruit fly research" yesterday indicated she obviously flunked high school biology. Drosophila has been a preferred vehicle for genetic research for many scientific reasons - including the large size of their chromosomes and rapid reproduction. Drosophila research has made important discoveries with respect to Down's syndrome. As most of us know, Drosophila is the genus name for fruit flies. Look, you can make up all kinds of reasons (racist) why McCain is going to win but, when obama draws 100k to a rally, and McCain plays to empty seats and 4k,,,,well that's a pretty big indication where the people are leaning. CNN's electoral map has McCain only able to win if he wins EVERY tossup state, and takes at least one other state from Obama that's firnly in the Obama camp.
Yet still you think your guy is gonna win......like most GOP, none of what you believe is rooted in reality. It's Faux News and Limbaugh and Palin and mud slinging and fear mongering....
McCain has run the worst presidential campaign I've seen. And now it's starting to eat itself as the campaign advisors begin the blame game, and Palin begins to try to protect what she views as her national political future (lmfao @ that).
McCain's presidential run is done. And there's going to be so much finger pointing and blaming going on regarding why the GOP lost the House, Senate, and Presidency in 2 years. And if Obama has success within the first 2 years of his presidency turning this country around,,,,The GOP as a party is finished. And good riddance to the selfish bastards and don't let the door hit them on the way out!

"Reviewing the polls printed in The New York Times and The Washington Post in the last month of every presidential election since 1976, I found the polls were never wrong in a friendly way to Republicans. When the polls were wrong, which was often, they overestimated support for the Democrat, usually by about 6 to 10 points.
In 1976, Jimmy Carter narrowly beat Gerald Ford 50.1 percent to 48 percent. And yet, on Sept. 1, Carter led Ford by 15 points. Just weeks before the election, on Oct. 16, 1976, Carter led Ford in the Gallup Poll by 6 percentage points -- down from his 33-point Gallup Poll lead in August.
Reading newspaper coverage of presidential elections in 1980 and 1984, I found myself paralyzed by the fear that Reagan was going to lose.
In 1980, Ronald Reagan beat Carter by nearly 10 points, 51 percent to 41 percent. In a Gallup Poll released days before the election on Oct. 27, it was Carter who led Reagan 45 percent to 42 percent.
In 1984, Reagan walloped Walter Mondale 58.8 percent to 40 percent, -- the largest electoral landslide in U.S. history. But on Oct. 15, The New York Daily News published a poll showing Mondale with only a 4-point deficit to Reagan, 45 percent to 41 percent. A Harris Poll about the same time showed Reagan with only a 9-point lead. The Oct. 19 New York Times/CBS News Poll had Mr. Reagan ahead of Mondale by 13 points. All these polls underestimated Reagan's actual margin of victory by 6 to 15 points.
In 1988, George H.W. Bush beat Michael Dukakis by a whopping 53.4 percent to 45.6 percent. A New York Times/CBS News Poll on Oct. 5 had Bush leading the Greek homunculus by a statistically insignificant 2 points -- 45 percent to 43 percent. (For the kids out there: Before it became a clearinghouse for anti-Bush conspiracy theories, CBS News was considered a credible journalistic entity.)
A week later -- or one tank ride later, depending on who's telling the story -- on Oct. 13, Bush was leading Dukakis in The New York Times Poll by a mere 5 points.
Admittedly, a 3- to 6-point error is not as crazily wrong as the 6- to 15-point error in 1984. But it's striking that even small "margin of error" mistakes never seem to benefit Republicans.
In 1992, Bill Clinton beat the first President Bush 43 percent to 37.7 percent. (Ross Perot got 18.9 percent of Bush's voters that year.) On Oct. 18, a Newsweek Poll had Clinton winning 46 percent to 31 percent, and a CBS News Poll showed Clinton winning 47 percent to 35 percent.
So in 1992, the polls had Clinton 12 to 15 points ahead, but he won by only 5.3 points.
In 1996, Bill Clinton beat Bob Dole 49 percent to 40 percent. And yet on Oct. 22, 1996, The New York Times/CBS News Poll showed Clinton leading by a massive 22 points, 55 percent to 33 percent. "

Sundog,,,,,what you've done is found specific results from a particular point in time from a poll that supports your position. It's easy and it's lazy. Anyone (sick enough to have to support their position even when wrong) could go through the data and come up with what you've come up with. However, I would assume you copied it from some pro McCain/anti Obama website? You don't seem to be the type who would actually do the research.
Fact is that the Gallup poll has only been wrong once in the 72 years they've been doing the Presidential poll (Dewey beats Truman, and they were completely within the margin of error of their polls). Go here (http://www.gallup.com/poll/110548/Gal...) for the complete story.
John Harwood, of the New york Times did a piece regarding McCain and his overcoming this deficiet, per the Gallup poll(http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,...), and that no one has done it before.
It's funny how you GOPidiots want to blame this on everything (polls, media, acorn, etc.), like it's some giant conspiracy against you. Wasn't the GOP once the party of "personal responsibility"? Regan right?
Anyway, hope that tin foil hat works for ya!

LOL....have you even remotely ever woked with statistics before? You've given data POINTS. Not the complete data. Or an analysis. You have quotes (") around the sentences, but don't say who wrote it? You give no links to the article? Scared to say where you got it from, cause it'll be a biased source?
I've given facts, noted who they are from, and given links to them.
You are a punk. You ought to try actually learning to discourse and debate. Might do wonders for your personal life.

Just run this one down, won't you, hotshot? That should be simple enough for you. Don't give us the general Gallup numbers. You didn't do your assignment, you worthless liberal dupe. You're worse than pathetic, and I'll bet your breath smells too, smart@ss, just like your "arguments."
Before you give me a lecture on the finer points of statistics, you need to learn how to spell on a third grade level, lil' puppy. Reads like you haven't even remotely "woked" with statistics... or copyreading either, have you?
Great that I didn't give you a reference point. All you can do is make the fervent hope that I will, so that you can discount it as being anti-B. Hussein. Nope. Do your assignment as ordered, wimpy. We'll let you hoist yourself on your own petard.
Your references are in the copy. That's where they came from. Start looking. Get busy.

What is that again? A great and mightiest country on earth and suddenly a Banana Republic? You must be insane to say this Freemarketworks, then blame the Dems for the mess when it’s been Bush and his sidekicks that have mismanaged the country for the past eight years.
You talk like the typical irresponsible chattering idiots from the homeland who love to shoot off their mouths before their brains can process what they want to say. You must have been influenced by the lies and falsehoods of corrupt politicians in your native Philippines that immediately and without basis in fact you have no qualms in saying Obama is spineless and corrupt president in US history. You know you cannot prove that just as you say he is a terrorist and a Muslim even if it’s been proven he is not. Out of ignorance you also call him a socialist, short of saying he’s a commie, just because you heard him say ‘spread the wealth’, when you do not understand exactly what socialism is all about. And now out of desperation, you say he is like Mugabe!
You always lie Freemarketworks. Why don’t you go back home to Nueva Ecija and stay there until your land of milk and honey is back on its feet again? For a Chinese-Filipino, you are a disgrace to your own kind when you lie.

MCCain supporters try to smear Colin Powell and other conservatives who support Obama, but where is their hero GEORGE W BUSH ? Why hasn't he endorsed and why don't McCain supporters have the integrity to admit they love Bush too!

I really think this is a closer race than people are lead to believe. I am not a fan of either man. McCain and Obama have proven to be very disappointing. Smearing has been on both sides. Pointing fingers doesn't take that point away from the American voters. People need to just vote, and vote for the one they believe will be the best President. The constant promises and lack of support changed my vote at the end.
Hero George Bush? He was a huge let down for everyone who voted for him last election. He was yet another person that was able to smooth talk the American people, same as McCain, Obama and all past Presidents. Either way we the people better get ready for another bumpy 4 years! Our economy isn't going to be repaired overnight, no matter who becomes President!

Once the precedent is set that it is acceptable to levy extra taxes against those who make more in order to provide benefits and bonuses to those that make less then all that remains is to define "the rich".
Currently that limit is set to those who make $250,000 or more.
What happens when the Guvmint decides that they need even MORE money (because supporting the low end of the spectrum is WAY expensive) they can redefine the limit any way they want to.
What happens to YOUR taxes when "the rich" are defined as those making in excessive of $100,000? $80,000?
Taking extra from the people who have sucessfully managed their careers and finances in order to give to those who cannot is dangerous territory people. Once this gets started, where does it end?

Here is an example of Obama's accomplishments as a senator. He passed the "Employer Patriot Act" that does this:
The legislation would provide a tax credit equal to one percent of taxable income to employers who fulfill the following conditions:
· First, employers must not decrease their ratio of full-time workers in the United States to full-time workers outside the United States and they must maintain corporate headquarters in the United States if the company has ever been headquartered there.
· Second, they must pay a minimum hourly wage sufficient to keep a family of three out of poverty: at least $7.80 per hour.
· Third, they must provide a defined benefit retirement plan or a defined contribution retirement plan that fully matches at least five percent of each worker’s contribution.
· Fourth, they must pay at least sixty percent of each worker’s health care premiums.
· Fifth, they must pay the difference between a worker’s regular salary and military salary and continue the health insurance for all National Guard and Reserve employees who are called for active duty.
· Sixth, they must maintain neutrality in employee organising campaigns.
OK - this is a total joke that NO economist has said will work and NO BUSINESS has said they will adopt.
OH - you get a shiny new tax cut!!!!!! But your home value goes down, your pension plan and 401k go down, and we make ourselves totally vulnerable to our enemiew due to his massive military cuts.
DO NOT BELIEVE OBAMA WILL SAVE OUR ECONOMY. HE IS A DEMOCRATIC PUPPET: Barney Franks has already said we need 25% tax hikes, and 25% cuts in military.
If you want the most liberal candidate is US history, and a liberal super majority in Congress then vote for Obama. One income tax decrease is ALL you will get. After that we'll get massive tax increases, welfare run rampant, union rules for everyone, social security dues increases, higher capital gains and corporate taxes. With higher capital gains your home value, 401Ks and pension plans will stay low for a decade.
Do you really think Obama can start 6 million jobs in "wind power?" Right. And who is going to employ you, the US government?
Do you want Supreme Court judges who will "reinterpret" the constitution! What does that mean? These are Obama promises.
All I can say is that there must be a LOT of people who have been living irresponsibly in the last 8 years - in a mortgage they shouldn't have taken, buying things they couldn't afford, if Obama is this popular.
Well, you will get your tax break - but you will NEVER get ahead under an Obama regime. You will spend the rest of your lives hoping the government is going to give you another tax cut.
If that's what you want - all I can say is you deserve what you are about to get.
