Which high school football game should be featured in the next Rocky Preps Remix?
At the end of September, the postseason already was slipping away from the Fairview boys soccer team.
The Knights entered October on the heels of consecutive losses and were saddled with a .500 record, not the sort of characteristics a team craves going into the stretch run.
But a funny thing has happened to Fairview. The Knights have yet to lose another game, and all indications are they are peaking at the right time.
Fairview continued its late surge Tuesday with a 5-1 victory against host Hinkley in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs, extending the Knights' unbeaten streak to six games. Fairview, the No. 21 seed, has won four in a row and outscored its past three opponents 14-1.
Twelfth-seeded Hinkley, champion of the Skyline Conference, had won 14 consecutive games since it opened with a 1-0 loss against Pine Creek.
"We're in a real good rhythm at the right time of the year," Fairview coach Stan Jozwiak said. "We played very well that first half of the season and didn't get a lot of results. We really stuck with it through the middle part, and over the last three weeks, we have scored a lot more goals."
Hinkley (14-2) struggled to create chances against Fairview's solid defense, yet the Thunderbirds struck first when a quick restart midway through the first half led to the 28th goal of the season for Oscar Trevizo, the leading scorer in Class 5A.
Fairview, though, dominated the possession and took a 2-1 lead before halftime, pulling even on a penalty kick by Alex Dickerson and taking the lead on a shot through traffic by senior captain Corey Westfall.
Hinkley nearly tied the score with about 20 minutes remaining when Ayrton Chavez Calderon took a free kick from just beyond the penalty box, but his curling blast deflected off the left post.
Fairview (9-4-3) capitalized on the momentum swing moments later, getting goals from Soren Frykholm and freshman Shane O'Neill less than 31/2 minutes apart to put away the game. Tim Cowley capped the scoring in the final minute.
"That post was on our side," Westfall said. "If that had gone the other way, it definitely could have changed things up. We were just trying to tame their scoring ability. We knew they are able to score goals. We just tried to possess the ball to control the tempo of the game."
