U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar came to Denver Elections headquarters in southeast Denver just after 9:30 a.m. to vote.
About 140 people had already cast their ballots on the first day of early voting. Holding his 9-month-old granddaughter Mireya Salazar in his left arm, Salazar got called within a couple minutes to counter number 2, showed his Colorado driver's license and received his ballot.
At 9:50 he dropped the thick two-page ballot into a navy blue metal ballot box and got his "I voted" sticker.
He said it takes a while to get through the ballot and that's why he's encouraging people to participate in early voting.
"This way people will avoid the long lines that we will see in November," Salazar said. "I was proud to be here."
Salazar, a Democrat, cast his ballot as the first part of a statewide campaign to promote early voting. He's going to board the Obama campaign RV and drive across the state with former Gov. Roy Romer and other state dignitaries, a campaign spokesman said.
