Excluding leading receiver Brandon Marshall, who is the Broncos’ most valuable pass catcher?
Jay Cutler has been a busy man lately, his omnipresence approaching that of some political ads.
The Broncos quarterback, coming off his September award as the NFL's offensive player of the month, since has appeared on an ESPN pregame segment about his diabetes battle and was the subject of a lengthy Pardon The Interruption segment.
He was called the league's top quarterback after his hot start in a USA Today article. He soon will be the subject of columns by prominent writers Peter King of Sports Illustrated and Rick Reilly of ESPN, The Magazine.
He sat down with Marshall Faulk for NFL Network and will appear on The Best Damn Sports Show Period today.
But all those words in all those interviews combined didn't have the eye-popping quality of a story appearing in the current Sporting News in which Cutler is asked point-blank about his arm strength compared with Broncos measuring stick John Elway.
Cutler didn't hem or haw or try to escape like he's under pressure on a typical Sunday. He took the inquiry head on and shot back he had a "stronger arm than John, hands down," and he'd "bet on it against anybody's in the league."
Ever since, various outlets around the country have bandied about the subject, while Cutler has taken it all in, with some wide-eyed wonder at how much play his comments have received.
"It was hit or miss," Cutler said. "Some people agreed, some people didn't agree and some people were upset with it. It caused a little stir."
But, Cutler stressed Wednesday, there are no regrets over the statement itself.
"No, not at all," Cutler said after his weekly news conference in which he'd largely deflected the topic. "I didn't know it was going to be quite this much, and I can't be 100 percent sure that I have a stronger arm than him.
"But I'm not going to say I don't."
Cutler sticking by his gun, and guns, is part of what endears him to the organization and his teammates. Many players faced with strong reaction might shrink from the fallout. Cutler won't.
And the fact he's even comparing himself at all to such a sacrosanct figure as Elway speaks volumes to his teammates and the front office.
"He's got inner confidence," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said. "But it's not arrogance."
"Playing with him, guys like that," Broncos receiver Brandon Stokley added.
Still, Stokley had extensive experience around Peyton Manning, whose national profile might be bigger than any current NFL quarterback. There was a post-playoff meltdown when Manning seemed to call out his offensive line, but he never compared himself to Johnny Unitas, either.
"All the good ones have that sense about themselves, even if they don't come out to the media and say it. You have to," Stokley said. "You've got to believe you're best and will get it done no matter what. What happened the game before, the good ones can just let it go and perform the next week."
Right now, Cutler and the Broncos offense are going through something of a lull heading into Monday night's game at New England against the Patriots (3-2).
Cutler ranks No. 3 in the NFL with 1,694 passing yards and fourth with 12 touchdown passes, but during the past two weeks, he's thrown for 227 and 192 yards after four consecutive 300-yard games.
"Turnovers," Cutler said simply, dismissing any defensive adjustments as a potential root cause for the dropoff. "Seven turnovers in two losses. That takes away from the time we have the ball, chances we get and opportunities to score."
The Broncos (4-2), from early in the second quarter of Sunday's loss to Jacksonville, were without their second-, third- and fourth- leading receivers, leading Cutler to fixate some, and perhaps understandably so, on Brandon Marshall.
Royal appears as if he'll be back for the Patriots practicing for the second straight week. Tony Scheffler (groin) was a limited practice participant Wednesday and his availability is more uncertain. It might be a long shot for Stokley to return off a concussion, especially with the bye week after New England.
"We can win without them. We won without 'B' the first week," Cutler said, referring to Marshall while flashing some of that outward self-confidence. "We've just got to limit our turnovers, take care of the ball and take advantage of the situations we've got."
The Broncos have been limited to an average of 17.3 points a game since a 3-0 season start in which they put up 41, 39 and 34 on the scoreboard, drawing all that attention to Cutler.
That type of production remains Cutler's expectation, regardless of recent events.
"Yeah, absolutely," he said. "Watching film, we expect to put up 30-40 points a game. That's the kind of bar we've set as an offense."
And what of the bar Cutler's set for himself?
In New England, backup quarterback Matt Cassel is being compared to Tom Brady, who's out for the season, and Cassel can't hope to repeat the record-setting performance of the league's reigning Most Valuable Player.
Cutler said he felt "sorry" for Cassel going through that scenario.
Cutler didn't exactly bring the Elway comparisons on himself - he was asked a direct question, one of many times that has been the case on the subject. But it was the first time he appeared to be so candid in his response.
"I said, 'Wow,' " Marshall said when asked his reaction the first time he caught wind of Cutler's comments. "But I'm always one where you never back down to a challenge or any receiver, and I expect him to do what he did. You want to show respect to the guys that made the game what it is today. But if that's how he feels, that's how feels."
That's why his bravado was so noteworthy: It was straight-forward in its unfiltered honesty.
And evidently, part of Cutler's DNA.
"We were joking around and stuff, sitting around. But I'm not going to take it back," Cutler said of his Elway statement, which the Hall of Famer himself didn't dismiss out of hand. "I'm going to say that I do. I'm confident in my arm. And so that's how it's going to go."

What's the big fuss. So he thinks he has a stronger arm than Elway? Did he say he's better than Elway? Did he say that he's going to smash Elway's records? Did he say that he will make Denver forget that Elway existed? No to all of the above. He just said he has a stronger arm. That's it, and who cares. What I care about is that Jay grow to be a better QB than he is now, improve on his accuracy and decision making. If he does that, then the QB position won't be a worry for another 12 years.

Oh come on! In agreement with one of the posts above, he hasn't said he is better, he has said he is stronger and that is only part of the armoury of a successful QB.
He has no less class, but he simply needs that level of confidence bordering on arrogance to be the QB that can finally do the job. Look at Griese. The ghost of Elway killed him. In many ways the persona is bigger than his achievements. Therefore, Jay needs a big one of his own if he is to be given the chance to step up.
Let him do his thing, finally the replacement has arrived.

Cutler has a bigger mouth and less class than Elway? Hardly. Jay didn't say he was a better quarterback he said he has a stronger arm. Let me break that down. That's physical strength verses career accomplishments. There is Grand Canyon size difference between saying I'm a better quarterback and I have a stronger arm. John himself has said that since his retirement its like he never threw interception or lost three Super Bowls, BUT during his career many fans wouldn't let it go.
Besides that who was comparing John Elway to Craig Morton, or any other quarterback who preceded him? And please don't try to tell me people didn't think John wasn't arrogant and spoiled. I know that's not the case.

I have a stronger pinky than Jay Cutler and John Elway. Want to bet? Last year I won the pinky pull race at the state fair. They tie like a 200 lb. log to your pinky and you pull it about 50 miles. Well, maybe not 50, but you pull it a long way. My pinky still hurts. Maybe Jay and John would like to try it. Hah... They couldn't, you need a real strong pinky.
Also, I think Jay and young John can both throw pretty fast. Maybe somebody should install a speedometer in one of Jay's footballs. Then we'd know how fast he is. You can't do that with John. He's an old guy now. I saw him on TV a week ago and he looked a bit creaky, like my grandfather before he fell out of his rocker and wound up in the hospital for six weeks. He's better now (my grandfather), but he sure looks older than John Elway does at this point.

Anyone that wants to say Culter has no class needs to move into 2008 and realize John Elway has retired, and if you want to see another Superbowl in Denver hang your hat on Cutler.

Okay let's set the record straight. Cutler was asked a question in an interview with Sporting News and he simply answered a question. Jay didn't get out of bed and start bragging about how much better he is than Elway. He didn't call a press conference or start going off in the locker room about being better than Elway. He was asked a very specific question about whether he thinks he throws the ball harder than Elway. Jay didn't just come up with this on his own and start boasting about his arm strength. He was asked and he answered.
Elway has more class and Jay has none? Remember how much crap Eli Manning got when he refused to play for San Diego?? Okay...remember 1983 when Elway was drafted?? Didn't he threaten to play baseball for the Yankees when he was drafted by the Colts?? He demanded a trade...many people felt Elway was a spoiled brat for doing that at the time. How quickly Bronco fans forget. How classy was that?
Cutler is still a little immature. Give him a break. You all want a 3rd year Cutler, to act like a mature 15 year vet Elway. Elway wasn't exactly the poster boy of professionalism during his first few years in the league either.

To be honest Cutler is on pace to beat out Elways records.
I will start with Elway's second season since Cutler did not play his whole first season.
1984 Elway: 56.3 Comp Pct. 2598 yds 18 TDs 15 INTs 76.8 QB rating
2007 Cutler: 63.6 Comp Pct. 3497 yds 20 TDs 14 INTs 88.1 QB Rating
1985 Elway: 54.0 Comp Pct. 3891 yds 22 TDs 23 INTs 70.2 QB Rating
2008 Cutler SO FAR: 64.0 Comp Pct. 1694 yds 12 TDs 5 INTs 94.8 QB rating
(Stats provided by NFL.com)
I mean 2008 and Cutler is half way on the TDs to match Elways 3rd season almost half way on the yards and throws less INTs than Elway threw. So the question is, Should Cutler be comparing ONLY his arm to Elways? The Stats dont lie Cutler could be as of right now comparing his overall play to being better than Elways.
I love Elway. What he has done for the Broncos probably will never be matched even by Cutler. But sometimes Denver fans are a little to hard on their QBs. I firmly believe Cutler will win us a Super Bowl or 2. Anyone mad about Cutler saying this should just be happy that we have a QB that can match Elways confidence that he had when Elway was young. You guys all forget how cocky Elway was when he was young. But thats a good thing in a QB especially when they can back it up which I believe both Cutler and Elway can/could do.

Cutler will never be as good as Elway--at least until he learns to line up behind the left guard once in a while....

Jay definitely has a arm comparable to Elway's; now lets see him roll out to the right and throw 60 yds across the field to a wide open receiver like Elway did, that was deadly! Its time to roll-out Cutler a little more.

Brain, I agree, roll him out of the pocket more.
Denver7, Cutler isn't going anywhere. And the remark of Denver needing to get a Jerry Rice was confusing, to say the least? We have some very, very good WR's. We don't need more. Defense, on the other hand, needs work.
Jersey, your remark about Elway not having a touch pass is wrong. Elway had the ability to throw a touch pass. Unlike you, I was watching the Broncos games, week after week. You weren't. You were watching the Giants. You didn't see even a 3rd of the games, I'm sure, as many of the Broncos poster have. Nobody is "shooting the messenger", as you put it. You're just wrong.
