Rockies pitching prospect Casey Weathers’ winter of work was cut short.

Weathers will be in Denver today to have his right forearm examined. He came out an Arizona Fall League appearance on Thursday with what was officially diagnosed as a strained flexor muscle in his right forearm. The Rockies want club doctors to examine him to confirm the injury is not more serious.

Minor league director Marc Gustafson said Weathers, the Rockies’ first-round draft choice out of Vanderbilt in 2006, will be put on a rehab program with the expectation he will be ready for spring training.

Meanwhile, the Rockies are moving forward in their search to fill vacancies on the coaching staff. Former Rockies shortstop Walt Weiss is the leading candidate for the hitting coach job if he decides he wants to get back in the game on a full-time basis. He declined previous opportunities, preferring to remain in his position as a special assistant, which includes being in uniform for most home games.

If Weiss declines, former Rockies first baseman Greg Colbrunn, and former Denver Zephyrs manager Tony Muser are next in line.

Brian Jordan, who has been the minor-league strength and conditioning coordinator, is expected to replace Brad Andress at the big-league level, and organizational pitching instructor Jim Wright is the leading candidate for the bullpen coach job.
