ASK!: Mystery of buildings found on I-25 is solved

Published October 6, 2008 at 6 p.m.

Text size

Paul is intrigued by what he describes as yellow buildings with red doors and "what looks to be an outhouse" behind each along I-25 south of town. He wonders what they are.

In the old days of the telephone business, those buildings, known as repeater huts, housed power plants that helped boost telephone signals along the line, in this case between Denver and Colorado Springs. Mountain Bell and, later, U S West used them until the 1980s, said Jerry Wild, a retired phone company employee who now volunteers at the Telecommunications History Group.

Next question:

How come restaurants have automatic dishwashers that take just a few minutes to do a load while my dishwasher at home takes at least an hour? - John
