The lobbying arm of Focus on the Family, the Christian organization led by James Dobson, is stepping up opposition to a ballot measure aimed at allowing Colorado's three casino towns to expand gambling.
"We have some pretty big concerns" with Amendment 50, said Chad Hills, an analyst with Focus on the Family Action in Colorado Springs. "$7 million has bought them some really good ads, but we don't think they are being completely honest with the public."
The initiative would allow Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek voters to decide if they want to raise a single bet limit to $100 from $5, keep casinos open as much as 24 hours a day and add craps and roulette.
More than three quarters of the additional gambling tax revenue would go to the state's community colleges, and supporters have billed it as a way to boost funding without raising taxes.
