The man who was killed this week trying to ski on Taylor Glacier in Rocky Mountain National Park was identified today as Matthew Chesaux of Boulder.
Chesaux, 40, died of blunt force injuries, according to the Larimer County coroner. The death also was ruled an accident.
Chesaux was an experienced skier and mountain climber, and at the time of his death he was wearing a helmet, according to the coroner.
Park rangers said they think Chesaux was skiing on icy and treacherous conditions on Tuesday when he may have lost control. Chesaux's friends contacted the park service later in the day to inform them that their buddy had not returned from his outing.
On Wednesday morning his friends went up Taylor Glacier to search for Chesaux and found him. Recovery teams eventually flew his body out of the mountain, the park service said.
Chesaux's friend told rangers that it was his goal this year to ski at least once every month of this year, the park service said.
Taylor Glacier is a little more than five miles from the Bear Lake Trailhead. It has an elevation of 11,800 feet and is know for its icy terrain and loose rock and snow.

Accident victim maybe Squatch? That's innocent enough. Victim of his own decision to ski on a certain path? Condolences to his family at any rate.

He was a college classmate of mine. This is not the best way to catch up with an old friend by hearing of his death. His drive and desire to explore and live life to the fullest is an inspiration. While mourning the loss of a friend I hope that I go in the pursuit of a full life as it seems he did.
