Staples Inc. said it has begun laying off employees at its recently acquired Corporate Express unit as it combines the two companies' operations.
Staples spokesman Paul Capelli said Staples doesn't yet have a precise figure for the number of layoffs - which also are occurring at Staples - or affected locations. He added that the process of integrating the companies is ongoing.
In May, Staples struck a $2.7 billion deal to acquire Corporate Express. Corporate Express was a Colorado-based public company until its 1999 purchase by Dutch company Buhrmann NV.
At the time of the merger agreement with Staples, Corporate Express maintained its U.S. headquarters in Broomfield, with 1,761 Colorado employees spread among two corporate offices, an Aurora distribution center and a national call center.
