Cocaine investigation paints harsh picture of ex-Bronco
Travis Henry portrayed as 'money guy' in drug ring
By Alan Gathright, Rocky Mountain News (Contact)
Published October 1, 2008 at 12:25 p.m.
Former Broncos running back Travis Henry is portrayed as the ruthless "money guy" in a cocaine trafficking ring who threatened to kill two accomplices and their families if they didn't repay $40,000 in stolen drug money, according to court records.
In what may become the fallen NFL star's last run, Henry, 29, was busted Tuesday fleeing a Centennial home where he and another man had allegedly received 11 pounds of cocaine in a federal sting operation.
"Henry ran from police and was apprehended a few houses away after a short pursuit," according to an arrest affidavit signed by Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Diane Jenkins.
Henry's alleged accomplice, James Mack, 29, "immediately went to the ground" as police closed in, the agent wrote.
Both men are charged with federal drug trafficking offenses and appeared briefly in handcuffs Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Denver, where they were advised of the charges and the potential penalties. If convicted, they face anywhere from 10 years to life in prison.
Henry's defense attorney, Harvey A. Steinberg, said his client was held without bail and will appear in court Monday for a detention hearing.
The DEA said it recorded six conversations an informant had with Henry or Mack about the cocaine deal that, in part, was supposedly arranged to repay the ex-Bronco $40,000 in lost drug money.
The bust continues a humiliating descent for the once-promising running back whose career ended in June when the Broncos cut him. Henry was a second- round pick - 58th overall - by the Buffalo Bills in the 2001 draft after playing at the University of Tennessee. After four seasons with the Bills, he played two with the Tennessee Titans before signing as a free agent with the Broncos in 2007.
He rushed for 6,086 yards and 38 touchdowns in his career.
Henry successfully challenged a failed drug test for marijuana last year by the NFL. But his NFL future was again clouded when league officials confirmed in July that he faced a one-year suspension for a new violation of the substance-abuse policy in the weeks before the Broncos cut him.
Drugs weren't Henry's only off- field problem. A Georgia child- support court case revealed that he had failed to make support payments for nine children that he fathered with nine women across four Southern states.
Mack was convicted of robbery in Aurora when he was 17 and was given an eight-year suspended sentence.
The cocaine investigation took off on the night of Sept. 16, when the DEA and Montana State Police stopped unidentified drug couriers in a Chevrolet Impala on Interstate 90 in Montana.
A search turned up a black duffel containing 6 pounds of marijuana and 6.6 pounds of cocaine, according to the complaint by DEA Agent Jenkins.
Caught with the goods, an unidentified passenger became a confidential informant for DEA investigators and helped arrange the deal with Henry and Mack, according to the affidavit.
Staff writers Jeff Legwold and Hector Gutierrez contributed to this report.

OK goldenratio - how about virtually all members of the original Orange Crush (as I recall that included Tom Jackson, Louis Wright, Billy Thompson, Randy Gradishar - or do I have to remove him because he's white?), Rod Smith, Terrell Davis, Floyd Little, Steve Atwater, and Dennis Smith. In fact most of the running backs and receivers qualify - and the majority of both are black.
I could go on about all the players that (regardless of color) if I had the opportunity to call friend or mentor would be proud to do so. WAG on my part, the vast majority of the players on Broncos (both black and white) over the decades have been men of integrity who could be viewed as role models. In fact, I think Travis Henry's escapades infuriate us this much for that very reason - not to mention that Henry was willing to put a multi-million dollar career on the line for selfishness (which Shanahan should have seen in his fathering 9 children with 9 women). Henry is an absolute loser - and at least Shanahan cut his losses before this latest stupidity.

Good point fxx. It just seems that sometimes a white guy playing a position like that of John Lynch is deemed a hero, for no good reason. Was Gradishar really a role - model and all those other OC members? Probably not. In my opinion, the Bronco most worthy of the title would be Brian Griese. Interestingly enough he is having a homecoming game, if you will, in Denver this Sunday. I can understand why some are disillusioned in regards to viewing who they look - up to. Football is a game where whites are the minority, that doesn't necessarily make a player like John Lynch righteous.

You also forget to mention that Karl Mecklenburg apologized to the boy and the boy and his father accepted the apology. Mecklenburg later explained that he had made a big mistake on that day. ----------------
He may have gotten involved with Drugs, but Henry was at one point a very good individual. When he was in Buffalo, he was probably the one player on the Bills who would go out of his way to help community causes, and spent more then his fair share of time in children's hospitials. Henry would stay well after most players would leave to sign autographs at training camp, and was known to talk to fans about an hour before the game while doing warmups.
Something happened that changed him, but he was a very high character individual. The one knock on Henry was that he loved fast women, and they loved him. He did move a few of his kids families to the south, paying off homes for them so he could be close to see them when he relocated to Tenn.
Shannahan gave him another shot, because Henry was at one point a person with very high character. But once he went to the Titans, it was all about money. Travis wanted more money every year he was in Buffalo as he had spent entire signing bonuses and was living beyond his NFL salary.

Shanahan talks about character being important, but also believes that guys deserve a second chance. He was made aware of another "drug infraction" by the NFL before cutting him back in June (became public knowledge in July), hence the blown 2nd chance.

Willy, Henry did all those things and more when he was a member of the Bills. He was regarded as the most generous of the players when it came to lending his time to community causes.
IMO the incident that changed it all, was when he was charged but not found guilty of having sex with a minor. A girl he was seeing at the time, and her friend wanted to have a threesome with Henry. Both girls lied about their age, with the younger one telling Henry she was 19, when in fact she was 17.
Henry was dragged through the mud in Buffalo and area for that, but was let off on the charges because he didn't know he was breaking the law, as to the best of his knowledge she was 19. Was it reckless, yes, but how many 23 year old men would turn down that chance? Any male that is single and not gay would jump at that chance.
He became very much a private person after that incident, not doing charity work and the like. I imagine this is probably also the same time he started doing drugs.
But to say Henry is the scum of the earth is wrong. Henry was at one point a very giving individual. He would go to Buffalo General Hospitial and visit the sick kids ward on days off, and was known to visit there after games and give memorbilia to the kids who were there. At one point he was a great role model. But like I said above, something changed him for the worst, and it was probably when he secluded himself from the rest of the world due to being called every name in the book, when he had done nothing wrong, or nothing that the average person wouldn't do.

I find it funny that he couldn't outrun the cops.
