ENGLEWOOD If Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler needed proof he had a stellar opening month of the 2008 NFL season, he'll get it Thursday.
The NFL on Wednesday informed team officials Cutler has been chosen the AFC Offensive Player of the Month for September, an honor that will be officially announced Thursday.
Interestingly, Cutler is the first Broncos player to be win that award since Brian Griese was so honored in September 2001, and Cutler and Griese will square off Sunday when the Broncos play host to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Cutler led Denver to a 3-1 record and first place in the AFC West last month. He completed 102-of-157 passes (65 percent) for 1,275 yards and nine touchdowns. He threw only four interceptions and compiled a 98.6 passer rating. He led the AFC and ranked second in the NFL in passing yards (1,275) and completions (102) and third in TD passes (nine).
Included in Cutler's totals was an AFC-high three, 300-yard passing games, tied for the NFL best. He finished September with two of the top three single-game yardage totals by an AFC passer. And his four TD passes in a win against San Diego was the second-highest single-game total in the NFL for September. His 36 completions against the Chargers tied a Broncos single-game franchise record and were an AFC high for the month.

Great job, Jay. Keep it up. You're going to leave a very positive memory to all Broncos fans. I'm looking forward to the next 12 games of regular season to see where you end up at. It should be very impressive.

Wow! Obviously the NFL doesn't care about recent performance. Don't normally see a QB get those kind of honors when it's clear their team won't be headed to the playoffs.
