Nebraska's Matt Slauson riled Colorado with his "irrelevant" comment.

Poll

Who will win Friday, Colorado or Nebraska?

Dan Hawkins isn't into posting bulletin-board material or having his Colorado Buffaloes react to it.

But somehow the smack still filters through his team, and Hawkins concedes, "It's hard for them to always ignore it - just because of the world we live in."

Take the line from Nebraska right guard Matt Slauson, a Colorado Springs (Air Force Prep) product who this week told reporters the Buffs "just seem irrelevant to me."

Hawkins was right: It was difficult for George Hypolite to ignore. But then, not much ever sneaks past Hypolite.

"If we're irrelevant, we're irrelevant - if that's what we are, that's what we are," the CU senior defensive tackle said Wednesday. "That's his personal business. We'll have plenty of time to talk on Friday. I'm sure we'll get very acquainted.

"I'm sure there are plenty of people in Nebraska who think the same thing. The reality of the matter is, on Friday, we have a date. We'll be there, he'll be there. We'll see who's irrelevant. At the end of the game, maybe he's right, maybe we're right.

"That's football for you. But my momma always told me when I was a little kid, 'Be careful what you wish for. Sometimes you sign checks your (butt) can't cash.' We'll find out."

The Buffs play the Cornhuskers on Friday (1:30 p.m. MST, KMGH-Channel 7) in Lincoln's Memorial Stadium.

ETC.: With CU thin at safety, secondary coach Greg Brown said nickel back Jalil Brown or starting corner Cha'pelle Brown could switch to safety if Patrick Mahnke or Anthony Perkins were forced out. . . . . The Buffs will have a team Thanksgiving dinner in Boulder before departing for Lincoln this afternoon. . . . Hawkins said CU's traveling squad will number 70. . . . Five Buffaloes made the Academic All-Big 12 football team (grade-point average of 3.20 or above): Jake Behrens, Hypolite, Travis Sandersfeld, Devin Shanahan and Nate Solder. Second-team honors (3.00-3.19 GPA) went to Patrick Devenny.

Slauson's comments are a joke in more than one way. Yes, NU has the better of CU in all-time games, however:
    1) Since NU's last Big 12 title in 1999, CU has played in 4 Big 12 title games. Yes, they got whipped in 2 of them, and one was kind of by default, but, they were there. K-State has played in 2 since 1999. Missouri will have played in 2 after next weekend. NU has played in one. I would say that if CU (and K-State and Missouri) are irrelevant in the Big 12, then NU would be "nonexistent."
    2) NU has no Big 12 titles since 1999. To put themselves in the same category as Oklahoma after getting drubbed by them by 34 points this year, as well as the fact that OU has 5 Big 12 titles since 1999, is ridiculous.
    3) Interesting how he can talk trash when getting ready to play an opponent who will be filling their starting lineup (due to massive injuries) with guys that were 2nd or 3rd on the depth chart. NU should win this game. Where was that bravado before the Missouri and Oklahoma games?

I still think it will be a good game. CU always plays tough even when they are a bit beat up. Good luck to the Buffs.

Here's the bottom line.... We'll settle it all on Friday which program is on the right track! This year NU has without a doubt been the better team all things considered. If CU has any pride and guts they'll play the game of the year and get themselves bowl eligible. One thing for sure it will be settled on the field not the papers!!

I believe CU made a major mistake hiring Hawkins much as we did with Callahan. We have some BIG TIME talent now arriving in Lincoln and the program is on the up swing. We have the right people in charge again with Dr Tom! Without him stepping in we would have been stumbling around in the dark for another 4 years. Bo was without a doubt one of the best DC's in college football. The question could he be one of the best head coaches? Well the jury is still out but it's looking pretty good.

When we've put together 4 or 5 back to back 10 win seasons then I'll say he's an excellent coach. We're going to a bowl this season and Bo did turn things around. Make no mistake the Huskers are STILL down on talent! It's going to take several years to see if Bo is going to greatly upgrade the talent level in Lincoln. We have a good QB this season that didn't even get a chance to play until Keller went down last year. Ganz was CLEARLY better than Keller but BC kept him nailed to bench for whatever reason. Ganz is more like a first year starter then anything! Pretty amazing considering how few games he's really played in.

I hope we have a good game tomorrow and CU fans are treated with respect. Folks ought to remember this is just college football and CU fans have right to be there for the game. I'm confident we'll treat the visitors to a good show without all the nasty things that have been visited on our fans in Bolder.....

cthusker is obviously an idiot, as shown by his contradictory comments of having "BIG TIME talent" but yet "the jury is still out" on whether they're going to be any good. Hmm sounds to me like Nebraska has the coaching problem and not the Buffs if that's the case.

What's funny about this year is that if the Buffs win this game and get invited to a bowl game, this would acutally be a better year than last year, given that 2-3 staring offensive linemen our out for the year, and our starting and 2nd string RBs have been sidelined for most of the year or not playing at full strength.

If CU beats CSU, NowledgeU, and wins a bowl game this year, then Hawkins will once again have this team on the upswing. It's all about Friday.

Final thought- what's funny about Nebraska fans is that they were once thought of the most cordial fans in the country. That was when they were winning. Now that they're losing more than they're winning, the fans are rude, meanspirited, and nasty when you attend their games. I guess I might be that way too if I had to live in Lincoln. I'm always happy in Boulder.

Go Buffs! Play with pride and kick the snot out of NU tomorrow!

Just my humble opinion but I believe Mr Hypolite and the rest of you who got your pride insulted mistook the "irrelevant" statement. I believe what Slauson meant is that most of us don't care about Colorado. It is a big game because it's on national tv and here at Nebraska a "W" is ALWAYS big. If Hypolite or any of the rest of the team need to take statements in order to get up for a nationally televised game that means you go to a bowl or not well I guess I would question the intensity of attitude during the rest of the season compared to Friday.

Just like when Mohler said he expected to get booed at Memorial...he's assuming that we care that he went to Boulder. Yes we could use his help at LB but we're fine without him so good luck at CU and check your ego because we don't care about you Mr. Mohler.

Melly you're far mistaken if you believe Pelini inherited a ton of talent. We have FOUR walkons starting on defense...walkons! We have true freshmen filling in spots and have been running a 3rd string DE for several games. Sorry but you're just mistaken

I understand how much your team has been thru this season and I feel for those kids up there and for the good fans (not the idiot Husker haters...you guys are just morons) but the good fans have expectations of a program and when you get much less than what you expect it's hugely disappointing...I feel for you, we've been there. I call it getting "Callahaned".

Listen BO...as Huskers we don't have much to brag about this decade but neither do you as you Big 12 North rings just show that you were the best of the worst...congrats on that. However if you want to run it "historically" with us Husker fans we'll be more than happy to point out things like snowballs at our kicker during a potential game winning field goal or how about the urine bombs in your stadium...seriously, do you want to throw down quality of program with Nebraska? We shouldn't run smack on you this year and you shouldn't run it on us. We're middle of the pack and thankful to be there. However I do respect that you're defending your team.

I used to hear "it's hard to be humble when you're a Husker", well it ain't so hard anymore. Realistically we're improving weekly and are playing our best ball of the season right now, that does not bode well for CU and I wish we had another 3 weeks in our season to enjoy more improvement.

My apologies for rambling...good luck Buffs...here's to a clean game with no major injuries.

BTW I believe Hypolite will get the best of Slauson but Slausdaddy has Murtha back helping on that side and it isn't often you see a 6'5 325 O lineman with a six pack...Murtha is a monster and Hypolite will have to go to work against him. Should be a fun battle to watch.

Buff4Life you show your ignorance, lack of civility and inability to READ the written word! I said we NOW have BIG TIME TALENT... "ARRIVING!" That means this years recruiting class you moron... DUH! Pelini has done an outstanding job with what he was left by BC which wasn't much. Do you know anything about college football except to run your uninformed rude mouth? No I didn't think so...

Do you think having a defense ranked 114th last season means we had much talent? We are now 68th simply because of good coaching! You think having 2 out of 4 losing seasons means BC had stocked up on talent? Right good thinking! We had mediocre talent and poor coaching under Callahan! That is being remedied and NU will once again rule the north very soon.

You really do sound like a pinhead from Bolder with those reality blinders on. Take a look around! So you think your team might be better than last year? ROFLMAO! You kidding right? Coaching problems? Ya think you can find a QB that's not the coaches son? Yes CU does have big time coaching problems! Have you actually looked at Hawkins record since he arrived? Nah didn't think so because it's not good.

CU is going to get buried in Lincoln tomorrow so start thinking of more lame excuses what happened. I'll be back to remind of your teams butt kicking.

To try and claim Husker fans are rude and mean spirited means you never go to games in Lincoln. Don't be lying about it because you know you don't! I doubt you could find your way out of the socialist workers paradise of Colorado anyway! Lincoln is rated as one of the top places in the country to watch a college game. That rating isn't from Husker fans but by the rest of the country including all the top coaches! I'm sure you know better than they do? Try reading SOMETHING other than, "How to think Green"

In Lincoln we NEVER pelt our OWN players with garbage or require our drunken student section to be ejected. Talk about a no class that is no class! Would you like to talk about that one ? Nah.. didn't think!

CU is known throughout the B12 to have the rudest fans in the conference. BTW how many sell outs in a row have you had in that little stadium of yours? ROFLMAO! PLEASE.. don't try and compare a program like CU's with NU's because you can't. NU has FIVE NC's while poor Puffy has... errrrrrrrrrrrrr 1? Now it's time to claim you don't care because you can sniff the pot in the air at one of your games... ROFLMAO!

It's simply impossible to be civil to a rude idiot like you! Stay in Bolder where you can keep your head buried in the smut.

You will however find out tomorrow where CU stands this season and trust me you won't like it!
Have a great Thanksgiving you rude moron.........

I am a husker fan but lets be honest, neither of our teams have given us much to brag about lately. I am very thankful the Huskers are playing some good ball right now. Pelini is getting the job done. I hope things workout for you Buffs. I miss the old Rivalry games (when we were both ranked) and really want to see the North strong again. I am sick of the South.
I would say to "BO" you are preaching to the choir. Injuries are part of the game buddy. But have you checked out the Husker starting D. 4 def. lineman and walkons. Thats where coaching comes in. Filling those spots. Not hard to coach when you have a healthy team full of AA or 5 star players (USC, Florida, Ohio St., Texas). Do you guys really believe that Hawkins is the right guy. For your sake, I hope so. Looking a bit like the Notre Dame situation.
One last thing on the fans. I have been to games at both fields and seen how visiting fans are treated. No comparison. NU w/o a doubt much classier. Hey don't hate us because we are beautiful, classy, National Champions and just flat own your Buff arses!!! Burn Buffs Burn. NU 48 CreamPuffs 17. Happy Thanksgiving.

Buff4life's comments were uncalled for. However, I do have to disagree with you on the fan thing. I am a Colorado native and Buff fan living in rural Nebraska. I have seen how "America's Best Fans" can behave when things aren't going there way. I have seen Husker fans complain about opponents running up the score when an opponent still has their starters in when ahead by only 20. It was OK, however, for Husker starters to be in when ahead by 40. I have seen a letter to a newspaper complaining about ACC officals, not only blaming them for the loss to Virginia Tech, but blaming them for an outcome of a game with ACC officials that took place in 1982 (he was mad about Dave Rimington being called for holding). I can also remember "Sal Is Dead- Go Big Red". I can honestly say that I never heard any Brook Berringer jokes (and I was living in Colorado at the time). CU's fans aren't the best, but I also believe that if your fans are that great, you don't need to constantly tell people. I think that's what draws the ire of other fans in the Big 12. I always hear horror stories about how Nebraskans are treated, such as not being seated at eating establishments and being flipped off in traffic. I have Nebraska license plates and nothing on my vehicle that indicates that I am a CU fan. I have yet to have any issues, and I am someone that has been to Boulder on quite a few occasions, as I have family there.

Yes, NU is historically the better program. NU and CU are two completely different schools. NU is largely kids from in-state. I would bet that less than half of CU's enrollment is from Colorado. While I think Lincoln is a nice town, Boulder offers more in the fall and early winter besides football and pheasant hunting (nothing wrong with pheasant hunting- just saying). CU also competes with 2 other D-I schools as well as 4 profesional sports teams. Colorado gained a million people between 1990 and 2000. All those out of staters still mostly root for whatever teams they used to. Its just a different atmosphere.

The game will be a dissapointment. At the beginning of the year, I was expecting a very young, but possibly more talented CU team against an older but experienced Husker team in what would be a great game. I now feel that if the Huskers can't win this game by 3 or 4 touchdowns (with all of CU's injuries), they should be ashamed.

Anyhow, good luck, and enjoy the game.

I forgot to address Hawkins. I think he'll do a good job. His Boise State teams would have easliy won the Big 12 North every year since about 2002. Look what his recruits did to OU a couple of years ago. I just want CU to get to a point where they're in the Top 20 every year, and have some shots at the Big 12 title and a New Year's Day bowl. To expect anything more is unrealistic. There's too much parity in college football to expect anything more. If you do, you'll be disappointed. There are still Husker fans that expect them to win every game by 30 points (including USC last season). In some ways, the 1995 Husker team was the worst thing that could have happened, because there are many fans that expect the same type of team every year.

Again, enjoy your Friday. It should be good for Big Red.

    CT,

I read your comments/rants a lot and understand where you are coming from... But I think you need to check your facts. I grew up a Husker fan with grandparents, two aunts and two uncles all living in Lincoln (and an uncle in Omaha). It's still a nice memory that the summer rite of passage when visiting Grandpa would be to go to the stadium and buy Husker gear.

Where am I going with this? As a Colorado native I went to the University of Colorado (Boulder -- check your spelling). I still had the friendly rivalry with my family until a funny thing happened in 1990. I went to the CU-NU game in Lincoln.

I have never seen, nor have I seen since, worse fan behavior, including CU games (and sometimes I believe we definitely get out of hand with the visitors). As I have said before on these boards attending sporting events is part of what I do for a living and I get to see a lot of bad behavior throughout the country, especially in the South (SEC and ACC).

Three specific examples still kick me in the stomach from the game: crossing the state border and seeing in gigantic red letters painted on the interstate: "SAL IS DEAD, GO BIG RED." This was in reference to the late Sal Aunese, who died the year before. Maybe you remember, maybe you are too young. Sadly, a gang of chucklehead boys continued to wear the same slogan on their shirts for at least five more years (mostly at Husker basketball games).

Then, on campus, one of the dorms had sheets hanging off the side -- each with one letter spelling out: "SEE YOU IN HELL, SAL."

We had not even gotten to the stadium. Once there we were pelted with Cokes, anything cold in a container (it was a freezing day with frozen rain all game), and a chorus of pretty nasty stuff. I distinctly remember a woman who was working a concession stand (!!!) come from behind the counter, get in my face, and yell: "See you in hell, CU!" Clearly no one was paying attention to Coach Osborne's "call for decency."

The good part was the game; despite a terrible three quarters by Bienemy (he fumbled something like 4-5 times), he scored four touchdowns in the fourth. Final score: 27-12, CU.

I was in Omaha and Lincoln one more time recently after my brother graduated from Creighton. Same attitude.

Even my family is pretty bad. Try as you may you can't defend Husker fans or put them on a pedestal as you seem to. They are at least as bad as any other group of fans, except maybe when you are killing the opponent. Then I bet you are real nice.

In any case, good luck tomorrow, Husker nation -- but you should not need much. You do indeed finally have a coach to match your recruiting classes. It pains me to say that Colorado on the other hand will need a lot of luck to win. Please let the Barnett era go away -- and let Hawkins get 4-5 classes under his belt.

Calling Ct an idiot for his well measured response is indicative of a bad behavior sydrome associated with Buffalo football.

I don't think this CU can beat the Huskers in their place this year, could be wrong but I doubt it. Pelini has rejuvenated this team and has the backing of almost every Nebraskan in the state. Not only has the fan base been excited over this team, the team has taken new pride in itself.

Nonetheless, the series is 4-4 between both teams since 2000. Neither program is where they have been historically, or where they want to be right now. Nebraska most likely does have the better team right now, as CU has struggled with a lack of offense and several injuries this season. CU fans for the most part like Hawkins and the talent that is coming in, as NU fans believe with Pelini. I am sure better days are ahead for both teams.

Nebraska fans - Enough with stating that CU fans are the worst anywhere. I have been to games in Athens, Knowville, and Ann Arbor where opposing fans are treated with more contempt than NU fans in Boulder. I have been to one game myself in Lincoln where we were heckled, but for the most part NU fans were gracious hosts. There are some unfriendly students at CU games that act like morons, but do not tell me that Folsom is the only stadium where NU fans are treated with disdain. That is part of the passion of college football.

CU fans - Most Nebraska fans are accommodating, friendly fans, as are many CU fans. As with above, don't let a few ignorant comments influence your opinion of an entire organization.

The Sal Aunese thing did happen, albeit many years ago. And, as I said in an earlier post, I honestly didn't ever hear any Brook Berringer jokes.

It wasn't the entire student section that was cleared, just one seating section because a FEW unidentified idiots were causing problems. Even the announcers that day pointed out that 90-95% of the people were behaving just fine.

I think the problem is that many Husker fans think they have to go around telling people how great they are. When you do that, its perceived as arrogance, whether its meant to be or not. If you come off as arrogant, you're going to get a few unfavorable things said to you. I know CU fans that have stories of being treated very unfavorably in Lincoln as well. Besides, my philosophy is that if you're really that great, you don't need to tell everyone.

I recall a story a few years ago on trash-talking in college football. A CSU player was interviewed. He said the team that talked the least out of trash of all the teams they played that season was USC. They let the scoreboard talk for them.
