100,000 POUNDS OF BIRDS

Extra! congratulates those who stepped up to the plate to help the needy during these uncertain economic times.

7,134 turkeys were collected by the Denver Rescue Mission as of Tuesday, surpassing the organization's 6,000 goal. The turkeys (all 12 pounds or over) left over from the misson's distributions and meals will be given to smaller agencies and churches.

THE HOUSE OF SEVEN GAVELS, PERHAPS?

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper has thrown the door open for citizens to suggest names for the city's new justice center complex, rising on the site of the old Rocky building. According to the city charter, such facilities can only be named for outstanding citizens, past or present. Anyone wishing to submit a suggestion needs to provide at least 100 signatures in support and an essay explaining their suggestion. Call Anthony Aragon at 720-913-8462 for complete instructions and a petition form.

GOBBLING, BUT NOT TURKEYS

Tired of all this talk of turkeys? Sickened, perhaps, by the mass slaughter that hovers behind the holiday? Then consider the turkey-free Thanksgiving vegetarian banquet put on by Rocky Mountain Animal Defense. Tickets are $35, or $10 for kids 4-12. The meal is taking place at 1 p.m. Thursday at Highlands United Methodist Church at 3131 Osceola St. in Denver. Call 303-449-4422 to reserve a place or go online at rmag.org. Tickets will be available at the door, too.
