Former major league catcher Butch Wynegar has been added to the list of candidates under consideration for the Rockies' hitting coach position, the one opening remaining on the team's staff.
The Rockies received permission from the New York Yankees this week to talk to Wynegar, according to a major league source. Wynegar is the hitting coach for the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate at Scranton/ Wilkes Barre.
Former Rockies manager Don Baylor and former Rockies first baseman Greg Colbrunn, currently the hitting coach for the Yankees' low Single-A affiliate at Charleston, S.C., interviewed for the job a week ago.
The Rockies are waiting to announce their 2009 coaching staff until a hitting coach is hired.
Pitching coach Bob Apodaca will return for a seventh season, and first base coach Glen- allen Hill will be back for a third year. The Rockies also have hired former major league manager Jim Tracy as the bench coach, promoted organizational pitching instructor Jim Wright to bullpen coach and promoted organizational infield instructor Rich Dauer to third base coach, the Rocky Mountain News reported earlier in the week.

Oh, no, not Jim Tracy! - I remember that he was quite the loser with the Pirates, and he couldn't control the Dodgers players a few years ago... so what's the reason for hiring him?
- But Butch Wynegar's a winner - like Carney Lansford is - (not so much for his .255 lifetime average, but as I recall, unlike Hurdle and Tracy, he's a tough-guy) - they should hire him immediately!

If the Rockies are not in contention by the All-Star break, could it be that we will see Hurdle dumped, and Tracy the new manager of the Rockies???
I dont know much about Wynegar, but I thought Baylor might be a good fit as hitting coach, and also a possible replacement to Hurdle....
The Rockies have more serious issues to deal with, other than their coaching staff. They need to replace the slugging ability of Holliday, and get their pitching staff in order...
O'Dowd needs to be very wise in his decisions, or it could very well be his last year with the Rockies....

A new hitting coach...hmmmmm. I suppose this means we will not be addressing the issue of our failing ownership group this off-season. Too bad. That's what seems to be in the way of us being a competitive team most years. I mean, new ownership worked for the Nuggets, right?
And I agree, ColoradoSportsFaninTexas. Once they do finally trade GA for a bag of balls & the Peruvian Winter League Bat Boy they've been asking for, we will have no right handed power. Spilly & Tulo are good for maybe 10-15 bombs per year, each. Ianetta is now our right handed power bat, & he only plays 3 out of 5 games.
