Regional basketball roundup: DU women net first win for new coach

Junior guard Andie Mason scored a game-high 11 points, and Celena Otero and Brianna Culberson added 10 points each as the University of Denver beat UC Davis 64-50 at Hamilton Gymnasium on Friday.

In winning their first game this season, the Pioneers gave head coach Eric Johnson the first win of his career.

"I think we did a great job of executing our game plan tonight, even though we had some lapses at certain points," Johnson said. "Our players showed a great deal of character against a quality opponent. We had a balanced effort on offense that really helped us to work together as team. Tonight was a great team win for the Pioneers."

Mason led a balanced DU scoring attack, which featured nine players scoring. Lisa Peterson led UC Davis with 10 points.

Culberson led the Pioneers with six rebounds and six assists.

Concordia-St. Paul 85, Metro State 80 The Roadrunners couldn't hold on to a first-half lead and lost to the Golden Bears in St. Paul, Minn.

Four Roadrunners scored in double figures, led by Megan Sinclair's 20 points. Sharaya Selsor and Chelsea LeFebre added 13 points apiece.

Sophomore forward Chelsea Porter came off the bench for the Rangers to post a career-high 24 points on 6-for-12 shooting.

Colorado Mines 81, Caldwell College 56 Kyle Pape scored 28 points as the Orediggers beat the Cougars at the Mines Tip- off Classic in Golden.

Dale Minschwaner contributed nine points, seven rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots for Mines.

Caldwell's Manny Perez lead the Cougars with 18 points.
