Canadian resort operator Intrawest announced job cuts but declined to be specific about how the layoffs would affect its employees at three Colorado ski resorts.

The Vancouver, British Columbia-based company issued this statement this afternoon:

“Like many companies in North America, Intrawest is not immune in this current economic environment. As such, we are taking the necessary steps to preserve our ability to be competitive and ensure our future success. As part of this process we have taken the difficult step of reducing and realigning our work force. Impacted employees have been offered access to outplacement services to help in their transition. Although these are difficult decisions for us, our vision remains consistent and we are committed to delivering exceptional experiences for our guests, homeowners and employees. “

The news coincides with opening day at Winter Park Ski Resort, which is operated by Intrawest under a long-term contract with the city of Denver. The cutbacks follow an 11th-hour agreement last month that allowed the company to refinance a $1.7 billion loan.

Intrawest spokesman Ian Galbraith said the company is “absolutely going forward” with the opening of its Colorado ski areas. Staff reductions will not have any impact on the “guest experience,” he said.

Among the company’s other holdings: Canada’s Whistler Blackcomb, host to the 2010 Winter Olympics.
