CSU report: Bowl buzz

Numbers Game

5 receiving yards needed by CSU receiver Rashaun Greer to reach the 1,000-yard mark. Greer didn't catch a pass in his first two seasons but is on the verge of becoming the first Rams receiver to eclipse 1,000 yards since David Anderson in 2005.

Colorado State coach Steve Fairchild is being careful to not mouth the phrase "bowl eligible" too much around his team. Yet a win against Wyoming in the annual "Border War" on Saturday would give the Rams a 6-6 record and give them an opportunity to land a bowl berth, perhaps to the New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque. Despite Fairchild's tight lips, being on the cusp of such an unexpected development hasn't stopped the Rams players from talking about it among themselves.

"We talk about it a little bit, but you still got to win," quarterback Billy Farris said. "Nobody is guaranteed anything. You've got to go out and execute and put points on the board. But definitely, we talk about it. It's obvious. Wouldn't you want to go to a bowl game? We're one game away."

Climbing

With 127 rushing yards during a win against New Mexico on Saturday, CSU running back Gartrell Johnson surpassed the 1,000-yard mark this season and moved into ninth place on the Rams' all-time rushing list. Johnson has gained 2,356 yards in his career and needs another 127-yard performance to surpass former Broncos running back Cecil Sapp and leap into seventh place.

Wyoming time

As a former player and assistant, Fairchild has plenty of memories regarding the annual Border War. The Golden Boot will be at stake Saturday in Laramie in a matchup the Rams have won seven of the past nine times.

"Our university and their university do a great job," Fairchild said. "I loved it when I came here for the first time and I got to be a part of it and saw how important it was. It becomes a part of your soul. Our kids are going to realize how important this game is. We're going to do everything in our power to keep that boot in Fort Collins."

It's the bronze boot, not the golden boot. There is a lot of history behind it, so try to get it right next time.
