Don Gips, who oversees Level 3's corporate strategy and development, reportedly is under consideration by President-elect Barack Obama for chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.
Gips has been with Level 3 since 1998 and prior to that served as chief domestic policy adviser to Vice President Al Gore, focusing on technology and communications.
Before that, Gips served as chief of the International Bureau at the FCC, where the agency was working on the landmark Telecommunications Act of 1996.
Level 3 spokeswoman Debra Havins confirmed Gips is part of Obama's transition team, but said Level 3 had no further comment on the speculation that Gips is a candidate for the job.
