Regional scene: Schemmel is Metro's new baseball coach

Longtime Nuggets radio announcer Jerry Schemmel has been hired as the baseball coach at Metro State, Roadrunners athletic director Joan McDermott announced Monday.
"Despite being a basketball announcer the last 19 years, my first love has always been baseball," Schemmel said. "I loved playing the game and I love coaching it. I am tremendously excited about the challenges ahead at Metro State."
Schemmel has served as an assistant coach at Metro State for two seasons and also previously served as an assistant at his alma mater, Washburn University in Topeka, Kan.
"Schemmel will continue to broadcast Nuggets home games as well as all playoff games, sharing duties with Jason Kosmicki, who will be the play-by-play announcer for all regular-season away games. We are very proud of Jerry and all his accomplishments," said Altitude Sports & Entertainment chief executive officer Matt Hutchings.
CU TAKES BID The University of Colorado women's soccer team (14-4-4) received a berth in the NCAA Division I tournament, taking the fourth seed in its bracket.
The Buffaloes will face South Dakota State (14-4-1) on Friday in Minneapolis.
"Playing in Minnesota is not going to be a shock to our system," CU coach Bill Hempen said.
The University of Denver (19-2-1) received an automatic bid as the Sun Belt Conference tournament champion, sending the Pioneers to face Kansas (12-7-2) in the first round Friday at Stanford, Calif.
* The Metro State women's soccer team (17-1-3) received a first-round bye in the NCAA Division II tournament.
Colorado School of Mines (12-5-3) will face Minnesota State (15-3-1) in the first round Friday at Auraria Field.
The winner faces the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champion Roadrunners on Sunday.
Regis University (15-6) will face Augustana, S.D. (13-5-1), in the first round at Winona, Minn., on Friday.
The winner plays Winona State (19-2-1) on Sunday.
* The RMAC champion Fort Lewis men's soccer team (17-1-3) will face Metro State (12-5-3) in the first round of the NCAA Division II tournament at Wichita Falls, Texas, on Thursday.
The winner plays Midwestern State (17-2) or Incarnate Word (13-6) on Saturday.
* The Colorado College volleyball team (26-11) received a bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, facing Christopher Newport (33-6) in a first-round match Thursday in San Antonio.
* The Adams State, Metro State and Western State women's cross country teams will compete at the NCAA Division II championships Nov. 22 in Slippery Rock, Pa.
The Adams State, Colorado Mines, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and Western State men's teams also are headed to the Division II title meet.
TIGERS SLIP The Colorado College hockey team (6-1-3) fell two spots to No. 3 in both national polls released Monday, and DU (6-2-1) jumped two spots to No. 4.
Air Force (8-0) rose one spot to No. 13 in the USA Today/ USA Hockey Magazine and U.S. College Hockey Online/CBS College Sports polls. Boston University (6-1) catapulted to the top spots in both polls.
RAMS DROP The Colorado State volleyball team (20-3) fell three spots to No. 16 in the NCAA Division I poll compiled by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
MATHOT HONORED DU midfielder Joey Mathot and San Jose State midfielder Nick Cukar were named the men's soccer co-players of the week by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
The DU men's soccer team clinched the MPSF title and an NCAA tournament berth Sunday with a 1-0 loss by New Mexico at San Jose State. Cukar scored the goal in that match.
