Talks between the Rockies and Cardinals about a possible trade of Colorado outfielder Matt Holliday have hit a 'dead end.'
Should the Rockies have traded Matt Holliday to the Cardinals for outfielders Ryan Ludwick and Skip Schumaker and right-handed pitching prospect Mitchell Boggs?
Talks between the Rockies and St. Louis Cardinals about a trade of outfielder Matt Holliday have hit a dead end.
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak declined to discuss details but admitted Sunday that the idea "is dead."
The Rockies were seeking a package of outfielders Ryan Ludwick and Skip Schumaker and right-handed pitching prospect Mitchell Boggs for Holliday.
Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd had said he did not believe any deal was imminent with any of the teams he has talked to about Holliday, adding "things are fluid."
In addition to the Cardinals, Oakland showed the strongest interest in Holliday last week during the annual gathering of general managers. A's general manager Billy Beane said last week he has some payroll room to add a run-producing corner outfielder, which would mean Holliday could fit in the A's budget.
Philadelphia had shown interest in Holliday during the 2008 season but did not discuss him with the Rockies last week. The Rockies were interested in outfielder Shane Victorino, whom the Phillies indicated is no longer available.
Boston, Tampa Bay and the New York Yankees also are known to have had interest in Holliday, whom the Rockies made available after deciding they would not be able to agree with him on a contract extension.
MOORE DIES: Former Rockies executive David Moore, 63, died of an apparent heart attack while deer hunting Saturday in Minnesota.
Moore spent 40 years working on the business side in Major League Baseball, joining the Minnesota Twins in 1968. In 1993, he became the director of Coors Field administration and development for the Rockies, retiring at the end of the 2007 season and returning to Minnesota, his home state.

I hope this drags out until the middle of next season, it's not pathetic at all that the Rockies are in a fire sale and clubs like Oakland and Tampa Bay are the buyers.

I hate you Monforts, I wanted to give you a chance after the WS run. But it looks like that was never supposed to happen. You have alienated your fans and your players. You are terrible owners and no one in this town wants you around.

Why do any of you think an on-line petition is going to have any effect on the owners of the Rockies?

Sounds like Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak doesn't like dealing with the Brothers Monfort very well. Everybody knows we have to unload Holliday (I still can't believe they feel this is how to win titles), & The Rox just won't budge. Look, I don't want to see him go, but if you had a taker, do the darn deal & get it over with already. Nobody is going to give us a starting power bat in the outfiled, a top of the rotation guy, & a top prospect. The price is too high for a guy entering the last year of his contract. I agree with you Chicken, Oakland & Tampa should be in the same financial boat we are (O'Dowd called it "mid-market"). So, who is lying to us?
Also, nobody ever gave a full answer on why Jim Leyland up & quit on us. I heard it was because of how tight the Brothers Monfort are with the money they make off of die-hard fans like us. I heard of an interview, I never heard it myself though, where Leyland said he just couldn't be around the losing attitude any longer. He also said it was all due to the front office's lack of commitment to fielding a competitive team. I can't find the interview to verify, but it would explain why he had no trouble accepting a job in Detroit after he told all of us he was done for good.

last year, during the run to the world series, the rockies captivated my interest in watching baseball. one of the big components was holliday. now we're trying to trade him? how about trading the boneheads in management who are making all these decisions. fans, the only way to have a say is to vote with your wallets, boycott the team by refusing to give this ownership any of your hard earned money.

Hey you morons who think the owners are stupid...You remember Denny Neagle, Mike Hampton, and dare I say Todd Helton?
I love Holliday, but his success and his agent have made it not beneficial for the rockies to sign him..Do you really think a 7 year 140million plus contract is a good idea? Remember baseball contracts are guaranteed and so no matter what happens the team is on the hook...Is Helton worth his current contract? I love the guy, and he is the greatest Rockie in history, but there is no flexibility when his productivity goes down.
This is reality, stop blaming the owners and hope for a great trade that is win win.
We need consistent pitching, this team is loaded with talent and we can survive without Holliday although he will be missed.
