METRO DENVER -- People on the way to work or to get in line to vote this morning encountered a proliferation of campaign signs sprouting illegally along I-70.

Colorado Department of Transportation workers were busy pulling up what appeared to be thousands of signs supporting Republican congressional candidate Bob Schaffer along I-70 in the area near Kipling Street and Wadsworth Boulevard and along Federal Boulevard and Pecos Street.

CDOT spokeswoman Stacey Stegman said the planting of illegal campaign signs has picked up in recent days, but has been steady for months.

She said CDOT crews pick up the signs when they happen to be working in an area where the the signs are present - but pulling campaign signs isn't a top priority.

Stegman said she saw about 30 campaign signs for Democratic congressional candidate Mark Udall and Schaffer on an off-ramp at C-470 and University Boulevard on her way home Monday.

"It's all over," Stegman said. "There's a ton of campaign signs in the right-of-way. It goes on the entire election."

On- and off-ramps are the preferred spots for the illusive sign planters because traffic isn't as dangerous as it is along a major highway.

"They're all over the metro area."
