Seizing his moment on college football’s big stage, Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell has grabbed the lead in this week’s Rocky Mountain News Heisman Trophy poll. And he did with a flair for the dramatic.
Harrell connected on a 28-yard touchdown pass with Michael Crabtree with 1 second left Saturday to beat Heisman candidate, quarterback Colt McCoy, and No. 1 Texas 39-33. It capped a stellar performance for the senior, who passed for 474 yards and two touchdowns.
Harrell earned five first-place votes to move from third last week to first. The leader for the past three weeks, McCoy fell to second, just ahead of Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, who earned three first-place votes. Defending Heisman winner Tim Tebow of Florida was fourth; Crabtree broke into the poll at fifth.
